      Makeup remover cloths! I use Erase Your Face (similar to Face Halo) and haven't had to buy cotton pads, makeup wipes, or makeup remover in months - wayyy less waste, plus less products on my face - yes please!
      I'm big on reusable to-go coffee cups, of course having a reusable water bottle on me always, and tons of Tupperware for food storage instead of single use plastic bags/cling wrap/etc. Using a french press or other coffee maker rather than a pod machine, switching out cleaning products for concentrated (and green) ones that you can get a small bottle of concentrate, then just add a bit to water to refill your bigger bottle over and over creating less waste (Melaleuca has some great options but I'm seeing more and more pop up at my grocery stores and Canadian Tire etc which is amazing!) Also, making sure I have the small reusable shopping bags that fold up in a tiny ball in all my purses/backpacks in case I grab a few things when I'm out and didn't plan to bring my grocery bags with me :) And say no to straws!

      My favourite products and tricks are:
      - keepCup (and other reusable mugs)
      - Stainless steel straws
      - Diva cup
      - Mason jars (for pretty much EVERYTHING)
      - Halo Face wipe
      - Shopping for what I need at a bulk store. I only go to places that allow me to use my mason jars or other class containers
      - I also try so hard to buy my face creams and shampoo in the same type of way
      - My useable tote bags for groceries
      - My compost bin is life
      - Putting some type of weight in my toilet (not the rim, the other part of the toilet) so not to use more water
      - Bring my own take away containers when I know I'll need something to eat on the run.
      - Turn off the water when washing my face and teeth
      - I try to repurpose other things in my life that would otherwise create waste, it is hard but we have been making big changes for the last 1,5 years

    Yes! more influencers like you should be doing more videos like this! Artists of make-up do an eyeliner pen that takes cartridges, so you buy the pen and when the 'ink' runs out (one lasts me approx 1 year) you buy a new cartridge, save money, less waste and its a great liner.

    Another tip I've been trying to implement lately has been shopping at bulk barn and bringing my own jars. You can bring your clean jars/containers up to the front, they weigh them, you fill, and then they just minus the tare from the jar. I know they also have a zero waste shop in Vancouver I would love to check out the next time I'm there.

    I absolutely loved this video Karissa! More influencers need to talk about these important topics because people don’t realise how easy it actually is to make small changes that can have large impacts! It also ends up saving you money in the long run too. I know a lot of cafes have discounts if you bring a keep cup and there are more and more public water taps being made available for reusable water. And hello, who wants to deal with cling wrap and al foil tearing all wonky and getting stuck to everything except what you want it to 😅

  • @gwizzlybluebear164
    @gwizzlybluebear164 6 лет назад

    So happy to see you speaking about this. I’ve started to make small changes in an effort to reduce the amount of waste I produce as well. I take reusable produce bags to the supermarket now instead of using the plastic ones they supply, and I make an effort to avoid packaged foods where possible. I also started using matches to light my candles instead of buying plastic lighters. I’ll definitely be replacing all my plastic Tupperware with glass once they break. Thanks for bringing awareness to such an important issue!

  • @elmy026
    @elmy026 6 лет назад

    Glass Tupperware is my fav thing. Cleaning them is easier than regular plastic, they last longer, you can microwave them without concerns about BPAs, and you feel a little more fancy eating lunch out of them. I’m also in love with my ruby cup!! It’s teeny tiny and you can’t feel it inside you

      Also we have a worm farm at home! It's really good to put the worm juice (?) on the vege garden. The only thing is that they don't like some foods, such as citrus and some meat products, so we have make an effort to leave these out or else we'll attract rats

    I rave to all of my friends about stainless steel straws because I love them so much! I also swear by my diva cup, never getting plastic bags from the shops (saying no to retail plastic bags too), my little bamboo cutlery set in a cloth pouch that I take with me everywhere, shampoo and conditioner bars instead of bottles, no cling wrap or plastic food bags - I aim to be as plastic free as possible!
    I also recommend for everyone to look into the impact of an animal-heavy diet on the environment. Karissa has talked about this stuff before, but its a great way to be more sustainable!

    This is a great video Karissa. I’ve been trying my hardest to change things in our household to more sustainable options and some of them you mentioned too 😊 I’m not trying to force anyone, but I have my own eCommerce business on my channel. I created a reusable Deluxe Fiber Microfiber face cloth that can be used for makeup removal and basically all your face washing needs. I was sick of spending money on makeup wipes and thought of all the waste we produce so I made my own brand. It’s available on Amazon USA. Anyway, thanks for bringing awareness to to sustainability. Also, I worked as a childcare/daycare educator and we had a worm farm. Pretty neat little thing. The children collected all their organic waste, banana peels etc and we placed it on the soil and the worms would devour it. In turn you get ‘worm water’ essentially and you can use it on your garden 😊

    You can have a worm bin in your house/apartment!! The Red Wigglers especially are great, I've read they don't like the heat as much as other worms. They are supper low-maintenance and it is super easy to make your own out of wood. Btw it won't smell the house at all as long as you put soil/ compost over the fruits and veggies you just threw in! also the "TEA" water they give is the most nutrient dense water for your plants!

  • @Livingdeadgirll
    @Livingdeadgirll 6 лет назад

    I found some great glass "Tupperware" style containers at Dollarama for about 2$ a piece! We stocked up and they've been lasting us a long time so id absolutely suggest people check there if theyre on a budget! Also, i stumbled upon a Kickstarter for foldable re-usable straws that fold into a little keychain! Super handy for when you're out of the house with out the one bag you keep your straws in! We have the same compost bin & we heard that if we go down to the city composting facility here in Calgary its FREEEEEE to take a couple pounds of it! STOKED!
    sorry for the long comment, this is by faaaar one of my FAV topics!!

    Awesome video! I'm a long time subscriber and I love that you put out content about this as it's something I've become more passionate about too! I think the best thing we can do is simply to buy less. If you need something, look for second hand or for an alternative, buy something ethically sourced or made local and made of quality products so that it will last longer. If we have less, than we will need less space to store it which takes less energy to heat or cool the space as well. Thanks for sharing Karissa! From a fellow Vancouverite

    I really love that you are super into sustainability, but besides plastic etc. In the beauty industry there is definitely also the problem of palm oil, etc. That has such a big impact on our environment. Maybe you want to look into that too!

    • @lemr.5173
      @lemr.5173 6 лет назад

      Vanessa I agree, unfortunately palm oil is the worst thing to try and control as it has like 50 names for it (exaggeration but there's a lot), so you never know where and when it's actually used. I've heard almost as much as 50% of any given supermarket products contain palm oil. This is one area I'm trying to do better in my life, and so far, it's definitely the hardest.

    My New Years resolution was to reduce plastic! I've done pretty good so far. Jasper alberta (where I live) is in the process of banning plastic bags park/town-wide. The health food store I work in here has always taken back everyone's used plastic bags, we sort through them and hand them out again. I'm a member of our community garden and this summer I wanna try my best to remember to bring my compost with me to my plot, that's something I can't seem to ever remember... I have gotten good at bringing my storm trooper Keep Cup in my back pack! (You have to check out Keep Cup's Star Wars range!!)
    Anyways I love that you did this video ! Keep up the amazing work! Every change helps 🌿

    Another easy food scrap solution: chuck cut off from your veggies (potato skins, carrot peels, the top and tails of celery, mushroom cut offs, broccoli stems, onion waste, thought not the papery skin...etc etc) into a big freezer bag, and freeze until it’s filled up. Then put all of it pot with enough water to cover it, boil/simmer until reduced and you have a lovely veggie stock!
    It changes with each bag, depending on what you have been cooking; but it means I don’t buy stock anymore, and the original “waste” gets a second use before you compost!
    Thanks for the video!! Sometimes people don’t realise how easy it actually can be ❤️❤️

    It's a tiny bottle brush!
    Once you take the wet waste (food waste) from you garbage bin, you are left with dry waste which means you don't need to buy a bin liner either. I use a old reusable shopping bag that is too small for shopping and just empty it into my outside bin and put the bag back in my kitchen bin.
    The bees wax wraps also come as soy wraps for those who don't use anything honey.

    Have you checked out the Soap Dispensary in Vancouver? It’s a store that is dedicated to selling kitchen/house staples without packaging! You bring your own mason jars or containers and fill up what you need.
    Thanks for the video Karissa! We definitely need more influencers like you ❤️

    Thank you so much for putting this content out there!! My partner and I try to be a conscious as possible with the impact we have and it’s always mind blowing how many people haven’t made the easiest swaps!! Also I’m surprised you didn’t mention factory farming as you’ve mentioned before how upset you get when people talk about the environmental impact of other things but never factory farming, but I think that’s better reserved for other content and not this video anyways. Love everything you do girl 💖💖💖
    Ps: your compost bin is super cute.

    Have you thought about swapping to a safety razor? They're way more eco-friendly compared to plastic disposable razors and the blades themselves are even compostable! Would love to see a review from you on one! :)

      Awesome! I've been researching a few over the past few weeks since I'm really considering swapping to one - fed up with the plastic waste that comes with shaving! Check out the Merkur Long Handled (23C?) and Edwin Jagger ones!
