i think this saga has some of the best voice acting in videogame history. Hell i even think this was one of the first series who had that level of great and serius voice acting and dialogue

This was one of my greatest loves in gaming and one of my first examples in showing others that gaming was a home for such great story telling that film and tv just couldnt accomplish at the time.
I really wish square enix would revive this series like they have with tomb raider and hitman.
I think the time is ripe to have a great dark fantasy series come forth and really grip a new generation of gamers
Best monologues too. Dialogue wise, I enjoyed Raziels conversations with Vorador and Jarnos
This is truly top performance, but MGS 1998 has equal or even better voice acting.
Neat little detail in the opening cinematic, there's a faint light or rather an aura tracing around Raziel's figure. This shows he is currently at full strength and able to call on the Soul Reaver. When he suffers any blows from Kain, the light fades momentarily then is regained just before he arrives at the time portal.

god the dialogue is so rich and the story so intricate. true it's gameplay wasn't the most notable but damn if there was ever a game that felt more like an incredibly layered novel then this would be it. we need a legacy of kain for this generation

+Pöwner Iq well not, i think that in gameplay, SR 2 was a step back compare to the first Soul Reaver (who was a nearly perfect balance between action, free exploration and puzzles) This has alot of puzzles, some problems on combat system and almost nothing of bosses. I love the history as the first one tho, but if you ask me, i stay with the first SR

Why does no one EVER mention Michael Bell's stunning acting as Raziel??? His voice is so soothing and so elegant. Man, truly it sounds so majestic and awesome with his lines and personality. Brilliant just BRILLIANT character!
I had to throw that in there because I always see praise for Simon and Kain and yes he's awesome but Raziel is equally just as awesome. In fact, the rivalry between these two is truly some of the finest encounters I have seen in gaming.
Michael Bell is one of my favorite voice actors because of his portrayal of Raziel.
Michael did an amazing job. What troubles me is how his voice sounds like that. When I heard Raziel I legit thought he sounded like an 18 year old. Then when I saw the voice actors in the arcane tomes I was stunned

OMG!!! What an incredible idea! Heck, keep your fingers crossed as it may one day happen just like with Castlevania. In fact, it may be better as a series than a videogame.. Sometimes a world and story are so well done it is too good for videogames.

I was just thinking to myself, "What happened to story writing, and voice acting like THIS?" Games these days are good, but this series was truly great...
Currently the only series that I rank close on Story telling to Legacy Of kain would be a Japanese series called The Legend of Hero's, it has awesome lore and a awesome story and interesting villains, the main character are somewhat standard but are good, the only thing that no game could ever top is the dialogue, LOK has god like voice acting
Simon Templeman is the coolest voice actor for antiheroes. He's perfect as Kain or Loghain from Dragon Age.

Mobius may not be a physically intimidating villain but those final words and tilt of his head before he warps off are no less chilling. He was such a well written and acted antagonist, even if he was ultimately a lacky of greater entities.
He was really underwhelming in Blood Omen. It made him seem rather weak and honestly just insane. Soul reaver definitely turned that around and made him a lot more the schemer he claimed to be. Pulling strings for his god to unfold the events destiny demanded.
@@TerreosI wouldn't say he's any less a schemer in BO, he manipulated Kain into blundering so hard he doomed his own race.
@@Terreos I think Raziel alludes to Mobius's "masks", in a matter of speaking, back in Soul Reaver 1. Something about one side of Mobius being a fortune-teller of sorts to most people, and the other being the Time Streamer and master manipulator of many.

"The Oracle's Cave, where Kain's first fateful meeting with Moebius occurred.
*Moebius played the role of a doddering soothsayer, stirring his pot of visions while dispensing enigmatic predictions to gullible visitors. Underneath the facade was Moebius the Time Streamer, sorcerer of the Circle of Nine - a ruthless manipulator with the power to bend time.*
Since his murder at Kain's hands centuries ago, these caves have stood vacant... though, like Moebius himself, they are rumored to be only a facade for a much larger, more elaborate complex..."
@@rueceless7580 Me too, and also the fact Moebius went back in time to ensure William the Just would become the Nemesis, before he would use Kain to kill William BEFORE he became the Nemesis, and igniting Moebius's genocidal war against vampires, even more so than what he did with the Sarafan centuries before, or his working to have Mortanius help him overthrow Janos and the ancient vampires due to the Elder God's tricks.
The only thing this series needed to overcome was it’s gameplay, if they fixed that, it would be the masterpiece it deserves to be.
The first 2 games had spectacular gamepay and control for their time. Especially the first game on PS1...it was the Zelda of gothic adventure.

My God I loved these games. I played right through the series from the first two games on the PS1 and the other three on the PS2. The storyline and the dialogue were so incredible.
Can we all just appreciate how ahead of it's time these games were? The facial animations, the voice acting, and the story. Fuck and the music!

Is it weird that some facial expressions in this game look more authentic that some of the newer games, the shifts in expression on Raziel, Kain and Mobius are very well done.

Mine was Dark Cloud.
I remember after finishing the original Soul Reaver how badly I wanted this game to come out (that cliffhanger at the end). Then it did, and I was NOT disappointed. Then I eagerly awaited the next. Defiance was truly an epic in it's own right. Yet . . . that's where it "ended". Watching this now, I'm immediately immersed in the quality of story. Something so few games actually possess today, and I miss this series. I miss it so much. But, perhaps I should be glad they don't pick it up again. I would hate to see it ruined by morons looking to make a quick buck. Thanks for uploading this treasure, mate, and cheers to a golden franchise.
Someone should catch Amy Hennig and make her work on the last Legacy of Kain game.
the lip syncing and animation in this fucking game NOT the cgi cutscenes but in game, is fucking incredible. Just had to come back and say that after seeing andromeda's absolutely atrocious, horrendous poor excuse for facial animation and animation in general.
I agree. It's amazing (and kind of sad) that the lip syncing in this game is still better than so many games today.

that sarafan theme just suits so well in those conversations as well in non combat moments, composed and used so well for scenes, love it.

Defiance had awesome controls.
Also, KAin was never a brute. He used magic with pretty basic swordsmanship.
I've played thousands of games in my lifetime. No other voice actors even come close to the performance of Kain and Raziel voice actors!

@Vox Populi It really does suck that it was never completed. But I still found the ending in Defiance pretty good, it did keep with the themes of the series.
Even though with Dark Prophecy there obviously was a lot more they wanted to do. What can you say... At least I am still hoping for an eventual remaster of this series.
I still love this whole story and wish Crystal Dynamics would give us a proper ending or continue from defiance with even more stories.

Although,come to think of it, if he was resurrected he would most likely be made of non-blue flesh ,like before his 'execution'.
Plus,a game was about to come as a continuation of LoK,but i personally found what little i saw, to be inconsistent to the cliffhanger ending and unworthy as a Lok sequel.

Kain told Raziel not to comprehend what he did because like you, he did not know what Kain was thinking at the time. The fact of the matter is due to recent events, Kain came to the conclusion that humans were not worthy to serve as guardians. He ultimately wanted to return the pillars to their rightful vampire creators but if he sacrificed himself (the last remaining vampire) then that would be impossible and it would only be a matter of time before the pillars are corrupted again.

Theres little hope for that. The game deserves it pretty hard but you wont get enough ppl behind it. The game is/was too special for most ppl.

This type of CG was a marvel for game cutscene back then, but the PS4 graphics surpass it. I hope Sqaure Enix reboot the series, they could make it look exactly like these cutscenes now that there is tech to run this quality in real time.

After all these years, I just noticed. Kain is looking a lot less human at the beginning of Soul Reaver 1. Raziel remarks that he gradually seemed less human and more "divine", and that he and his brothers were gradually transforming and becoming more powerful as well. Until Raziel's revival, a huge amount of time passes. All his brothers have turned into monstrosities. Yet Kain is completely unchanged. I don't know how much time passes from Kain's point of view during Soul Reaver 2, but he doesn't change at all until Defiance.
He definitely changed after Blood Omen 1 and 2, but then he stopped, as if he "matured". I wonder why that is.
Raziel was thrown to the abyss and he lingered there for a millennium before he was resurrected. Kain did not wait all of that time. Instead he used the time machine to skip time till Raziel's awakening as a wraith. That is why Kain's appearance did not change by the corruption.
God we need a animated movie of all this

Depends were you look, and what you will find as well. There are many good indie and kick-starter games, which a bunch of bad ones as well. And, the Triple A gaming industry is mostly dead to me, with a few games that catch my intention once in awhile.
I miss this kind of animation. All that mocap to makes things look real takes away from the fantasy that keyframed can bring.
Its strange how this differs from the ending of SR1. This is 1000x better. The best way to play SR1 is when you enter the final boss fight, close the game and watch this cutscene instead.
If politicians debate like Raziel and Kain the world would be far more interesting

Despite not usually being a fan of global politics, I think that several video games introduced me to them, albeit by proxy.
This particular game series, as well as Mega Man X4, were instrumental in doing so.

One of the best games/stories out there.
What gives him some credibility over someone like Mobius or the Sarafan is that he's honest about being a monster. Kain was born to be the guardian of balance just as the pillars were corrupted so fate did deal him a bad hand in that he had to die to restore the pillars. Seeing as how Kain has been unapologetically evil to that point. I'm inclined to believe him when he said he refused the sacrifice to keep vampires from becoming extinct and now he's gone back to try and have it both ways.
I love when Raziel is animated by hand, rather than motion-capture. He moves so unnatural, as he should.
I always thought that Hugo Weaving should play Kain, because in my eyes he resembles human and vampire Kain from Blood Omen 1.
His performance as V from V for Vendetta already proves he can handle this kind of delivery and dialogue expertly too.
Man, Moebius is one smug snake. Playing off to Raziel like he wasn't partially responsible for the death of the guardians centuries ago when he stayed Malak's hand and didn't give a speech to his future self about his destiny was "fun while it lasted"
