    I'll bolster my previous statement, that you NEED to experience this firsthand. Words dramatically fail to capture the experience. You literally can't tell someone what it is like, because there's nothing on the planet that can comare. This is so much more than simply racing. This is spectacle.

      @LarsonPetty the first time I went to a nhra event, I was not prepared for how the sound affects you physically. The smells the sounds, and the way it hits you in the chest it's something I'll never forget. Every motorsports fan needs to go to a NHRA event and a nascar race. I've been to f1. The speed is impressive, but it's not even close to the overall experience as nhra or nascar

    I went to an NHRA Sunday event something like 30 years ago. Don't even remember where. Lost the photos I took.
    The ground literally trembled under their power. The thump to my chest is something I'll never forget. Back then, Top Fuel was reaching 290 MPH in the 1/4 mile.
    Today they're MORE powerful and hitting 320 MPH in the shortened 1000-foot strip. It's amazing. Wear ear protection or you WILL receive hearing damage. The scream of those engines at the end of the run is unforgettable.
    And be seated UPWIND. :)

    Look for Lucas Oil NHRA drag racing series. Also look for Z Max Dragway, at that track they run four at a time with the fastest two cars advancing to the next round. Also, Pro Stock class, mostly Camaros, they run six seconds in the quarter mile. 500 cubic inch engine with a five speed gearbox. And finally Pro Stock motorcycle, 200 mph in the quarter mile.

    One thing to keep in mind regarding the pro stock and pro modified classes is that those cars, unlike the Nitro or Top Alcohol classes, have virtually no downforce to keep them from flying up in the air. Overcorrecting in those is especially dangerous. And there are times where those classes are not allowed to compete on days where there’s a high crosswind going over the track.

  • @LarsonPetty
    @LarsonPetty 8 месяцев назад +1

    You are very correct in saying that the Pro Mod crash could've been much worse. I was once in the pits, as part of a Sportsman class racing team during a loosely regulated test and tune session.
    There was a privateer Pro Modified team a few spaces over from us that were trying to get some shakedown passes in, and they were having a bit of a problem with the machine, as the nose kept trying to lift at 200+. They took practically all of the downforce off the rear wing and pulled back into the staging lanes to have another go. This would prove disastrous.
    Near the 1000ft mark, the thing broke loose at 206mph and clipped the wall on the driver's right side. This was back in the IHRA days, and that sanctioning body was always a bit more lax when it came to the safety of everyone involved (spectator, racers, and staff), and had both outside divider walls much closer to the racing lanes than NHRA mandates.
    In addition, some smooth brain decided it would be convenient to having a couple of narrow access gaps just wide enough for a person to pass through cut into the walls to ease track workers and medical staff coming on and off the blacktop. When the Pro Mod Corvette hit the wall, the driver had the extreme misfortune of doing so at one of these gaps. The inertial impact of the car clipping said wall void caused it to be violently thrown to the opposing wall in mid air. The car's roof came violently into contact with the corner of the barrier. Think of it as the car was basically curb stomped, with the roof caving in just above the driver's head.
    Of course, it had a full cage, but even that can only do so much. Such high speeds and proportional weights are still subject to the laws of physics and the sfety equipment bent right in on him. The cage and helmet initially saved his life, but he was paralyzed from the neck down. Years later, complications from these injuries are what eventually took him out. Back then, I had heard he and his family were going to sue the track/sanctioning body for damages. Had it not been for the pass throughs cut into the concrete, he would have likely just scraped down the wall, with the only possible injury being his ego. Since that day, every time I see a car upside down in mid-air, my heart drops.
