2008 CM Limited 5.7 here, just rolled 280k. Have had no issues, just the regular fluid maintenance plus brake pads/rotors, one new rad and water pump at around 200k. I don’t baby my truck mechanically but I do maintain it very well. My transmission/tc/diffs were serviced by the original owner at 100k. At 200k I did the transmission fluid again, a simple drain and fill at a Toyota dealer. Then at 250k I did the fluid exchange method via the cooler line and open thermostat. Replaced all the fluid with Valvoline synthetic ATF. It shifts perfect and always has…plus I’ve done quite a bit of heavy towing as well. Engine gets 5k oil changes and always always always 5w30 Mobil 1. Has had 5w30 synthetic for nearly all its life. My bed floor started having a few rust spots a couple years ago, but I repaired it myself. Toyota coated the frame under a recall campaign…I keep it touched up with black cosmoline. No rust anywhere else on the truck. I had the fender lips done in linex about 10 years ago…it’s a 3/8 inch reveal…eliminates rock chips that rust. Interior is still mint…I have a good set of running boards and always use to grab handle to lift up and out of the truck…never sliding on the seat. 10 years ago I installed a usb connection that allows me to plug the phone in for music and control it via steering wheel controls…12 speaker JBL is still unrivaled in any other vehicle I’ve had or been in. These trucks are absolute gold. If any of these old girls have a chance at a million miles…mine is one of them that could challenge it. I get compliments and jaw drops all the time from people…they can’t believe it’s a 2008.
Head gaskets are probably the biggest issues with Toyota engines as they age. That’s typical with most cars, but it seems with Toyota more so. Solid engines V6 and V8 non the less!
My 2011 with the 3ur has almost 180k. I'm the only one that's ever serviced the transmission which was when I bought it with 160k. Its had a hard shift into 2nd since I bought it which was slightly improved with the transmission drain and fill (I did it twice). I've noticed if I use sport mode surprisingly the shift into second gear is much smoother. I know these transmissions aren't the smoothest to begin with, not gonna stress it until I start having a real issue.
I just got an 07 5.7 CrewMax Limited 4x4 with 155k. Wait the console slides!?!??? I’m bout to go to see now!!! LoL The back window wowed me too! Had it bout two weeks now. It’s thirsty but I like it a lot!!!! 😂
Haha it took me a while to learn that the console slides too. Not sure if I was correct in the video, I think it's just the Crewmax tundras that get the fully retractable rear window. So yours should have the feature!
And then you see newer trucks that have come out where many mechanics recommend changing parts on and in the engine because they are prone to failure out of the factory even though they are brand new.
I'd keep that forever if it were mine. I wouldn't be fanatical about keeping it absolutely pristine but I'd definitely keep it clean. As for your leather, mine is perforated and was getting stiff and hard (not cracking or rough though) in my Highlander. I used "Chemical Brothers" Leather Cleaner and Conditioner. Spray it on, let it sit for a minute, rub it in with my hand then wipe it off with a soft cloth.. softened them right up!
The thing to worry about having an older vehicle is it could get totaled out in an accident. Repairs can’t be more than 60% of the value of the vehicle. Luckily Toyota trucks hold their value well. I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport double cab with 154,700 miles that I bought new. I’ve been in 2 accidents in the last 17 years, and was surprised that my insurance company approved repairs on the 2024 accident . The body shop wanted $9100 for repairs, but my insurance company was able to get them down to $7500. The body shop values my truck at just over $12,000 and my insurance company values it even higher, so they approved the repairs. The guy that failed to yield while making a left hand turn totaled his vehicle. Another vehicle that was beside me driving in same direction got totaled also. Both of those vehicles were newer than mine, but sustained more damage.
Great video Jack. I've got 233k on my 5.7L, such a great vehicle I might get another one. Regarding the transmission, I would try using Valvoline Maxlife ATF (Synthetic Red) if the WS is feeling weird. It might not change it, but I can tell you it will shift more firmly or...confidently IMO with the Maxlife. I have been running it for about 50-60k on my Sequoia, same tranny/engine you have and same external cooler, towing quite a bit too. I also used Maxlife in my daughters Corolla and my Lexus RX 350...it was great in all of them.
Thanks for the info. I had a shop drain and fill the transmission at around 300k and I think they used that Valvoline ATF according to the receipt I got. Maybe I'll switch back to it next time and see if shifting improves 👍
@@TheCarGuyOnline Yeah, had a shop do 4 drain and fills around 300k, and then I did 4 drain and fills this past summer about 375k or 380k miles. I know I should've done it sooner especially since I tow a lot. And one issue is that the first owner didn't change the fluid until 120k according to service records. When I replace the transmission one day I will be strict about changing the fluid on time
My 08 sounds like a diesel on cold mornings and it ticks after it warms up. I used a little thicker oil on the last oil change. It seems to have made it quiet.
My 2014 did that when new. I changed the oil and put 5w20 synthetic blend and it stopped. I like the Castrol GTX blend. I’m at 130k now. Runs better than new. I put 0w20 in a couple times in a couple different brands to experiment. Definitely hear the difference. I get 20 mpg running 70 mph on flat land with the blend in cool temps. About 18.5 mpg @ 70 in heat/humidity. Same thing with the 0w20 full synthetic. Mine is a 2wd extra cab. The 5w20 blend noticeably quiets the engine on mine. I tried 5w30 blend once, and it silenced the chatter completely. Ran good, but it did lose 1-1.5 mpg on the freeway. Got about 17-17.5 mpg.
Should've said it in the video, I did add it to the video description. Almost always 0W20. I've sent samples to Blackstone and I tried 5W30 but there was no improvement, so I went back to 0W20. I've tried a few brands but Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is my favorite so far
We know you at least changed your oil to hit 400k, typically if you don’t have rust problems at 200k , replace suspension, everything on accessory belt, injectors, coils plugs and wires. Usually around 300k interior starts to fail heater fans and such. I’ve had radiators last forever if they don’t have plastic end caps.
My all time favorite color for the Toyotas! I got a 09 tundra crew max with 170k have changed nothing on it.What oil are you using? And what mileage are you changing it? Good video and thanks!!!
Thanks, I love the blue streak metallic color. I run 0W-20 full synthetic, and I change the oil every 5-7k miles. In the past year I've been using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and it burns basically zero oil now (compared to Mobil1 where it would burn a little)
I do the same with oil but use the 5w20. And I swapped from mobile to ultra platinum just like you did. Thinking of trying the valvoline restore and protect but idk….

Been having my '08 since new. Just freshened up the paint. 157k and never been in the shop for a repair. It would be automotive suicide to get rid of a 2nd gen Tundra.
Honestly that's not too surprising. It's counterintuitive but age and sitting is hard on vehicles too. I'm not sure what the first owner of my truck went through in the first 100k miles but it's possible they had issues with '07 being the first year of the 2nd gen
@@rodas_guineaIndeed, although mine is a bit unique because it's an early '07 so it was built in Princeton, Indiana. Engine was assembled at the Alabama plant I believe.

Hey there, Jack, but I missed how much you paid for this truck, when you bought it, with 250k on it. If you didn't say, and you don't want to tell, fair enough.
Good question, I think I overpaid when I bought it 4.5 years ago but it was really clean and well taken care of except for the body damage to the rear. I paid $9k. Prices for older Tundras have come down in the last few years, so you could buy a good one with 200k miles for less money
That’s what I say about many modern cars. Before they were built to last, like the early 2000’s chevy. People don’t need to reinvent the wheel when it’s already doing good.
Bought it with 250k miles on it. It has taken me across the country a couple times though. And I used to drive between Minnesota and Kansas somewhat regularly.

@chancelachney7407 started using R&R after years of using Mobile 1. It was burning a little oil with mobile 1 i have not burned a drop since I started using R&R. 09 tundra limited 240k miles and still going
@@chancelachney7407been using R&P for over a year. Switched from mobile 1 due to burning a little between changes. Have not burned any since I swapped. I was skeptical about changing but valvoline is really some good stuff. I have an 09 tundra limited 240k and still running
Thanks! I might just give it a try the platinum has been really good for me so far.. I’ve always been a mobile 1 guy never had any burning oil but after watching project farm lol made me change! Waiting on him to do one on R&P.
Great car, what has been changed in the engine bay, like maf sensor, coil, alternator, starter, and fuel pump?
I wish I went over more of the repairs in the video. I added the list to the video description. Under my ownership it's had 1 starter, 1 water pump, front CV axles, radiator and hoses, spark plugs twice, and a few other things. I've actually never replaced the alternator and the fuel pump and coils are original. The front suspension is original too besides the CV axles
@@JackAttak Get new shocks, make a huge diff as original been kaput since around 85-90k max
There's definitely some stuff broken on my Toyota Celica with 400k miles, but it's lived a rough life.
What year Celica? I had a '92 Celica GT Convertible with the 5 speed manual as a project car. I bought it with a spun rod bearing and swapped the engine. It was fun when it ran!
@JackAttak it's a 1997b with the 7afe
Mine Has 422K Miles On The Original Transmission Still.
Bro, I 6 know they made the trim for tundras like that until 2012. The rear doors look different than the 2nd gen ones Im used to seeing. It looks good nonetheless.
I have 2011 dc rwd only 4.6 engine 84k bought it new royal blue
2008 4.7 liter limited with 112,000 ml. bought used with 23,000 on it great truck general maintenance brake done twice owed me nothing 6 passenger vehicle go to mechanic
What state has the truck lived it's live
Cool video :)
I only have 128K on my 2014, it may be the last vehicle that I own
Polish the headlights and it would look better!
You're right, they're getting cloudy again. I did a headlight restoration kit less than 2 years ago but it didn't last
Polish every week and w40 👍@@JackAttak
what is your radio
@@zackethier7799 Sony XAV AX1000. It works well.
How much did you pay for your Tundra with 250k miles if you dont mind me asking?
I paid $9k which I know is high but there weren't many for sale at the time. I bought it in Oklahoma in order to get a clean one with no rust
@JackAttak Awesome! Congrats I think you got a great deal!
Looks like a late tundra , did he change the wheels. These have aged well dont look super outdated
The wheels are from a 2018 Tundra, all the other trim is stock
@JackAttak looks much newer with those wheels ,I like that you chose the smaller wheels better smoother ride👍
It sucks they don't make the v8 anymore 😕 😪
nice truck, the rear brakes are wrong if you look the ears are not touching the bottom bracket at 9:12 probably wont cause a issue but something to look out for.
Thanks for letting me know, I'll look into it.
Been having my '08 since new. Just freshened up the paint. 157k and never been in the shop for a repair. It would be automotive suicide to get rid of a 2nd gen Tundra.
I have 70k miles on my 07 and you've had way less issues....
Honestly that's not too surprising. It's counterintuitive but age and sitting is hard on vehicles too. I'm not sure what the first owner of my truck went through in the first 100k miles but it's possible they had issues with '07 being the first year of the 2nd gen

"last long time"
Its 1/2 made in Texas 👍
@rodas_guinea by a Japanese owned company 👍.
Japanese Style.
@@MUCKFOOT399 true 👍
@@rodas_guineaIndeed, although mine is a bit unique because it's an early '07 so it was built in Princeton, Indiana. Engine was assembled at the Alabama plant I believe.
400,000 miles divided by 15.6 mpg (avg) = 25,641 x 3.50 per gallon is $89,743 spent on gas 💀
Oh yeah the MPG is the worst part. I've thought about switching to a Tacoma one day but I tow things for our ranch so the 5.7 is helpful.
@ either way 400k is a milestone and not having a another truck payment is a huge plus aswell
@@JackAttakford Maverick hybrid > Toyota Tacoma
And the Maverick has a 4,000 Lb towing capacity
@@Man_in_a_Gucci_Suit I tow 7-10k lb trailers for our ranch. That would absolutely not work for me lol. Maybe one day when I don't have to tow equipment
350K on my 2UZFE
Hey there, Jack, but I missed how much you paid for this truck, when you bought it, with 250k on it. If you didn't say, and you don't want to tell, fair enough.
Good question, I think I overpaid when I bought it 4.5 years ago but it was really clean and well taken care of except for the body damage to the rear. I paid $9k. Prices for older Tundras have come down in the last few years, so you could buy a good one with 200k miles for less money
i would get one but its thirsty on gas, more so then most domestic brand.
older toyota's bullet proof. Their new stuff are for profits and reliability is gone. Sad they went down that road.
That’s what I say about many modern cars. Before they were built to last, like the early 2000’s chevy. People don’t need to reinvent the wheel when it’s already doing good.
You got another 600k to go enjoy
what about his transmission? you suggest a quart of lucas stop slip?
400,000 miles/10mpg =40,000 gallons x $3 per gallon = $120,000 in gas alone!!!!
@@DStabs720 Yeah that's the downside. I get 15-17mpg highway though if I keep it under 80mph. Also I bought it with 250k miles on it.
@ it’s really the only downside to the truck. One of the best!
400k where did you go? Lol
Bought it with 250k miles on it. It has taken me across the country a couple times though. And I used to drive between Minnesota and Kansas somewhat regularly.
Reliable Toyota, but 400k miles it will retire at any time and days
Aren’t you a just a ray of sunshine…..🤢
@@cerny4444lmao 🤣
Less than satisfied with my cat back MF on my 07.
he'll still want $20,000 for it....
