I get that a lot of people don't dig it or think it's much of an upgrade, but I already enjoyed the Portal for what it was, and I've played a few games now via the Cloud and they run really well. I honestly can't tell a difference. So for what's available right now, it's not too bad, but of course hope the catalog grows. This is never going to be a machine that plays games natively OBVIOUSLY, so at least this allows it a BIT more freedom from the PS5 tether.
This is so nice, it’s actually HIGHLY enhanced the portal for me, since you can’t take advantage of game streaming off the service when you are remote playing, since its specifically blocked - this makes the premium membership feel more worth it now
I have a PlayStation portal and I'm not that pleased with it, but let's give it more credit than that. Lol a Wii u gamepad couldn't be moved more than a couple feet from the console. At least you can use this anywhere there's a good wifi connection

Sorry, but the only social media I trust is X. Even X over every news channel. All I think is that every news channel lures people into believing a specific channel and hate other channels. Lots of lies because you hear it this or that way to where you wonder, “What news channel is telling the 💯% truth. Benny Johnson who streams legit news here on YT and on X is who I trust more than any tv news channel. So I never really understand when people say they're exposed to all this negative stuff they don't want to be exposed to. But at the same time I could understand what they're saying and I get it. I have friends with opposite political views than me and their page is set up so they only see their type of interest. Yes there's always some descending voices and some jerk offs but you can block them pretty easy. To be fair though... PS Plus deluxe is a bit of a better deal than premium if you ask me. Instead of streaming PS3 games we get access to every PS3 era game that got a remake or remaster and we get to play it natively... Unitl they get rid of it like Kingdoms of Amalur... 😢... I take it back...
An actual handheld that can play native games would be much better than this. It wouldn’t be able to use disks but at least your device wouldn’t be a fancy brick without internet

I would get one if someone hacked it and allowed you to stream from your pc. You can do this now on even a phone, but this thing would be a much better experience.

The dual sense form factor, features and lightness is the best feeling hand-held I've ever had. Something people overlook when talking about the bulkiness, and weight of the steam deck but which is an essential factor for a handheld. The Portal is also much cheaper. Don't get me wrong the power and performance of the steam deck is fantastic, but your statement is just untrue. The Portal is an great device for what it does and that's the reason it's selling so well, even though it's not for you.

The whole thing is on beta r/n though with only 50 games supported (half of them are previously playable so...). Hey, I'm a big xbox fan, but even I'll admit Sony kind of has it in the bag (some how) when it comes to streaming games. Which is strange, as Microsoft has had HUGE Azure PC streaming servers for DECADES I'd think it should be cheap and easy to figure this one out.
Native Play is what makes a portable an actual handheld. Cloud is just Remote play with less consumer control. The portal is in the same position as it was when it launched. Putting the hardware in PS's hands while requiring a paid Subscription is worse than owning the PS5 and streaming your own games.
i really like that they did that now but honestly for maybe 150-200 price units more they could've made it an actual handheld but we all forget that remote play is also possible via smartphones or tablets via the ps app that alone makes the portal completely redundant for me

In short this is code for according to Sony 'good news you don't have to have access to your PS5 now to use your Portal, but bad news you do need an Internet connection still, as well as the fact that your games have to be digital and a PS+ subscription. And if you have neither, well sucks for you'. At this point, Sony may as well just make another iteration of the Vita or PSP.
I have a Steam Deck so this upgrade is not going to entice me to pick up a portal (I already stream from my PS5 to my deck and that’s plenty fine for me). Nice that Sony is supporting the device! If I had to speculate, they’re probably planning on rolling out more options for game streaming and this is just the foot in the door. Congrats on joining bsky, it’s really nice being on a platform that shows you just what you follow and in chronological order. Such a simple thing, but it makes a huge difference.

Sony has never provided cloud streaming in Australia....while most other countries have been streaming PS3 games, Australia has been in the dark on this feature (thus the reason why Playstation Plus Premium is known as Deluxe over here, because its everything except streaming services, which includes the PS3 catalogue) - so from that angle, ditching the gimped Australian service is a good idea

Welcome to the club of abandoninng social media. I did this 5 years ago by tuning off notifications and I've slowly stopped using a lot of these platforms. I work in technology and I still chose to step away. It should never be in control of your activities, you should choose when to access it instead.

Ugh I have the same issue! UK account and moved to the US also, my UK account is my primary with PlayStation Plus etc and I’m very attached to it due to building up my monthly PS+ library for YEARS. I have a US account but haven’t shifted over to it yet, sounds like it might finally be time as rough as it’ll be. Ridiculous that they don’t let you transfer, even just once as if people don’t move continents
The immigration issue is why I have grown to be quite displeased with Sony in the past 5 years. I had to reset my account on PS but had genuine trouble getting ahold of the UK support because I couldn't use their chat in Canada. I could easily call them due to the time difference. And unlike EVERY other platform and service out there you cannot change the currency on your PS account. I then lost all my saves over the past 5 years because I was only paying for my UK PS+ account, and then when REST mode forced me to factory reset my PS5 I lost all my Canadian saves. I've played 3 games on that console in the past few years because I trust Xbox, Switch and Steamdeck far more. Sony are NOT a global company. They're made up of national silos. In contrast" Netflix, MS and Xbox, Nintendo, Amazon, and Valva all let me convert my currency from GBP in CAD!
The portal is such a dumb device. I mean, I get it. I love gaming in bed or in the kitchen or the bathroom, but I've got my Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck that just do it better. No internet connection required, games installed and ready to play anywhere. Then there's this Portal thing that requires you to purchase a playstation and a subscription on top of having wifi access before you can even use the thing? It's an absolute joke. At least now, you can take it away from home under the right circumstances, but this gaming device is absolutely useless on its own.
I'm in the same boat, I created a Canadian Sony account but now live in France, and I can't buy Canadian games with a french credit card so I have to buy them on the french account and play them on the canadian. I don't want to loose all my trophies 😢 why Sony cannot figure out a way to changean account's country or merge accounts, is beyond me.
Why don't they just make a true successor to the PSP? I guess they don't want to have to make games that rely on less power since PlayStation's USP seems to be exclusive with great graphics. But you look at how Nintendo is able to optimize open-world games for the Switch and I think more is possible than people realize.

And literally everything out can do, a portable pc (steam deck in my case) can do it just as well if not better.

There's no shame in being emotionally attached to your accounts. I feel that it gives you that much needed hesitancy to create new accounts on a whim in this world that's constantly trying to coerce you to sign up for something.

Welcome to the club of abandoninng social media. I did this 5 years ago by tuning off notifications and I've slowly stopped using a lot of these platforms. I work in technology and I still chose to step away. It should never be in control of your activities, you should choose when to access it instead.

Ugh I have the same issue! UK account and moved to the US also, my UK account is my primary with PlayStation Plus etc and I’m very attached to it due to building up my monthly PS+ library for YEARS. I have a US account but haven’t shifted over to it yet, sounds like it might finally be time as rough as it’ll be. Ridiculous that they don’t let you transfer, even just once as if people don’t move continents
The immigration issue is why I have grown to be quite displeased with Sony in the past 5 years.
I had to reset my account on PS but had genuine trouble getting ahold of the UK support because I couldn't use their chat in Canada. I could easily call them due to the time difference. And unlike EVERY other platform and service out there you cannot change the currency on your PS account. I then lost all my saves over the past 5 years because I was only paying for my UK PS+ account, and then when REST mode forced me to factory reset my PS5 I lost all my Canadian saves. I've played 3 games on that console in the past few years because I trust Xbox, Switch and Steamdeck far more.

The portal is such a dumb device. I mean, I get it. I love gaming in bed or in the kitchen or the bathroom, but I've got my Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck that just do it better. No internet connection required, games installed and ready to play anywhere. Then there's this Portal thing that requires you to purchase a playstation and a subscription on top of having wifi access before you can even use the thing? It's an absolute joke. At least now, you can take it away from home under the right circumstances, but this gaming device is absolutely useless on its own.
I'm in the same boat, I created a Canadian Sony account but now live in France, and I can't buy Canadian games with a french credit card so I have to buy them on the french account and play them on the canadian. I don't want to loose all my trophies 😢 why Sony cannot figure out a way to changean account's country or merge accounts, is beyond me.

Why don't they just make a true successor to the PSP? I guess they don't want to have to make games that rely on less power since PlayStation's USP seems to be exclusive with great graphics. But you look at how Nintendo is able to optimize open-world games for the Switch and I think more is possible than people realize.
This is exciting, I don't have a ps5, but for $200 I might get this thing once they fix the bugs and glitches 😊
