@@jasonpitts8395 Yeah, he doesn't like the frontman concept and instead chooses to position himself back there to emphasize the music and de-emphasize himself as the "star." He used to sing out front way back in the day but has since recessed into the shadows
Thank you for this one! I love the ambient dissonance Mastodon creates. Couple that with all the chickin' pickin' stuff, unison notes, droning open strings, and Brann's and Troy's grooves, Mastodon is one unique and awesome band!
This was great. Worked out the chords from your video. What I find pretty amazing, listening closely like this, is how each chord as it's picked through creates a beautiful melody that develops with each note. Really shows the intention behind each note. You could take these chords and play them quietly on an acoustic and people would think it's cool af. Also really helped me appreciate Bill and Brent's technique. Placing the pinky correctly to let the string right below it ring is super important and takes some care.
I will feel sad if you dont hit 100k by this year this level of knowledge has to reach people good quality songwriting is the need for metal and music and you are the one who is contributing to it heavily
I think you could do a handful of videos on this band and still only scratch the surface of what they do. Another fantastic lesson, David! Keep up the great work.
Crack in the skye was my first Mastodon cd as well. Oblivion just blew me away! On the Hunter, it’s gotta be the sparrow for me...that solo is one of my all time favorite solos!
I couldn't click on this quickly enough. Really enjoyed watching the video, thanks. I can disappear from the world when listening to a Mastodon album, so much creativity and details to absorb. I think The Hunter is still my favourite. All the best !
My wife's face but I'm Brad. Dude you've become a favorite axe master of mine. I'm thrilled at your love for Uli and Ty Tabor my favs but the guitar player of the decade Tremonti is a brilliant riff master surely u appreciate his dope licks for an episode.
Been a fan of Mastodon since they first layed into my ears in 2006 via Headbangers Ball, music video for “the wolf is loose” they had me at dun nuh dun dun 🎶
WORTHYy channel Dave & continued success. Could you please do a chordplay of Frank Marino as well as Robin Trower? Also, could you please do a chordplay of classical composers like Mozart & Bach? Thanks.
When it’s time to get heavy the Paul needs too come out! 🍺’ski the sky is the limit for you online. Nobody comes close to your lessons! Get it while it’s there Brother. 🤘
I was a bit late to the Mastodon party, but better late than never. Crack The Skye is one of my favourite albums by any band.
The technique Mastodon uses reminds of banjo picking. I tend to find that I also love the songs with Brents singing over the others (It’s all good).
The reason why is Brent is a banjo player
Thats what i love about Mastodon, it s not your usual major or minor Chord.
If you ever get to see Mastodon live do it. They are amazing.
Agreed. Only Tool has ever given me the same 'musical awakening' feeling live
@@camdenmullenaux4490 I saw Tool once. MJK did the whole show facing the drummer. Does he always do that?

@@camdenmullenaux4490 cool thx. It was an amazing show for sure. I would have liked to see A Perfect Circle.

Great video, been a long time Mastodon fan and I love the lesson here! Thanks!

Fantastic dive into an exceptional band. Wouldn't mind seeing more on Mastodon.
Opening up with The Hunter's title track. The first Mastodon album I ever listened to.
Crack in the skye was my first Mastodon cd as well. Oblivion just blew me away!

crack the sky really got me heavy into mastodon. always enjoy your lessons.
Great Channel
I think once more round the sun is my favorite album but it's hard to say
the subjects discussed are completely relevant and I'm in love with your choice of artists! Thanks for all your work, it's really an exciting series !
Thank you thank you...crack the Sky was and is my Dark side of the moon. Your the man Dave🤘🤘
"Aqua Dementia" Man !! So Weird and Beautiful at the same time .."Quintessence" ....(OMG)
Underrated Band ..
Awesome
Dammit David! I can’t count how many times I’ve tried to get into Mastodon and failed. This is going to make me give them another go.
If you havent listened to the Emperor of Sand album, this could be the one for you. Brought me into it at least.
Thank you 🙏 badass lesson
Heavy.... HEAVY!!!!! Thanks, David!
STARGASM!!!
This was a great tutorial.
Brent hinds was a banjo player before he was a guitarist. You can hear a lot of that influence in his licks.
Yep. I think that's where he gets all those open ringing notes from
Thank you! Could we get a part 2?
That pic behind you looks like picks. Maybe you have collected. Lets see em one episode.
Love ya content!
Thanks for this! I really like Mastotdon. No one quite like them.
Suggestion: Acustic Mastodon 👍
There was a lot of prog thing on Blood Mountain, which is actually more technical and otherworldly than Crack the Skye

I was hoping you'd touch on Ol'e Nessie. That song has some beautiful chords
Great video! I don't get why Crack the Skye gets tons of attention while Blood Mountain is virtually overlooked any time Mastodon comes up.
We need a video for The Beast.
BLOOD AND THUNDER...... sold me just the video alone....

He's got a great video about Frank Marino somewhere....
@@voronOsphere Thanks, I'll look for it.
Awesome video! You learn all this by ear?
I searched all the posts but can't find this episode on Patreon. Did it get skipped?
this was great
Please play some Gorjia!! Definitely a Great Band!
The lead guitar on Seabeast is done by Bill.

These guys are Pink Floyd of modern medal.
Mastodon definitely have listened to chord melody players like Joe Pass etc. Those chords and progressions are steeped in jazz.
I don't like labels, especially"Hair" metal although, this style sounds like Nautical Metal. 🤔
more stone temple pilots chord lessons, more chord vocabulary lessons from STP
Don't trust your hat...just a kindly word of caution
