    🚀QUICK QUESTION: Are you an Extrovert or an Introvert?

    • @ladyethyme
      @ladyethyme 22 дня назад +2

      Introvert!

    • @drmathochist06
      @drmathochist06 22 дня назад

      Introvert. And yeah, I lean harder towards long lenses. Obviously when shooting birds, but even in landscapes.
      I think that an even better way of getting at it than the "desert-island lens" question is what framings you tend to see. When I'm walking around and I see a good composition, it's always a smaller part of the whole landscape, somewhere around 135mm if not longer.
      I know some other people just have a "wider" eye, where I have a "longer" eye. Street photographers, in particular, seem to just see the world in 35mm, if not 24mm. Or maybe that's just the ones who flood the photo social media spaces...

      Introvert, but I still love the 35mm full-frame equivalent FOV. I love to catch a bit of the subject's context, too. 35mm is perfect, for that. Long lenses are great, when you CAN'T get closer, because there's a river or a canyon between you and the subject. But as Robert Capa famously said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough."

      I am definitely an introvert. However, I shoot real-estate photography on the side, so according to LR metadata, I shoot mainly 15mm. But, when shooting for enjoyment, I am definitely using an 80-400 tele, OR, my 105 macro. I really enjoy macro, because usually I don't notice everything I am photographing until I photo stack and process.

    Good food for thought. I use the 17-35 mainly for landscapes and 70-300 on my crop sensor, mainly for motor racing and tennis. I shoot the 2 subject matters, roughly 50/50. I catagorize myself as confused.

    Short focal length prime (24-55mm) user, and hardcore introvert - INFP, high functioning ASD, severe ADHD. Have visual snow syndrome, tinnitus, and a bunch of other sensory processing disorders. I can hide behind my short focal length lens, and be part of something without actually being part of it. The sensory processing issues mean I also need massive amounts of sensory input to experience something everybody else might experience at a fraction of the intensity. Was in a number of band - still play guitar when my health allows - and I could not play if I had earplugs in. I mean, I could play, but not quite on, and with no extra expressive or accent notes. We’re talking Marshall and Mesa Boogie stacks, but yes, I did have the tinnitus before, and actually have a congenital defect that causes me to have pulsative tinnitus in one ear. The primes help me get close enough to an experience or person, whereas my zooms, only 2, leave me feeling like I didn’t actually experience whatever, and that it was just a dream. 🤙

    I consider myself to be an introvert. I prefer to work alone. On a tour I will often wander off and do my thing. My lens of choice is 24-70mm f2.8 which I guess will confirm that I am an introvert. However here is the kicker ... I am an extrovert when I am taking environmental portraits - typically peoples of much different cultures than my own. I like to engage the people to get more relaxed portraits and to share some of my culture with them. Just like politics - assigning labels to an individual is not very wise. LOL

    Wow, that really got me thinking about it. With my very small circle of friends I will probably be more the centre of attention but I am naturally shy and my social diary tends to be empty. Usually favouring a 70 - 200 zoom, I recently bought a 10-20 wide angle which I am loving. In the last 30 minutes, I have literally just unpacked my new 18 - 300 lens which I feel will be my new best friend and probably really does capture my personality traits. Great video and very thought provoking (you can see why I have few friends 🙂)

    The problem with that method is that I will shoot bursts of photos for wildlife, and a lot fewer images for landscape. The longer telephotos obviously show more shots than wider focal lengths, but I don’t think that correlates with which focal length I use the most. I do tend to be more introverted, but I think the lens I use the most is a 20-70 G which is primarily used in single shot mode.

    Mark, I never really thought about there being a connection between lenses used and personality traits but having looked at the lenses I mostly use, I would say I use telephoto or zoom lenses on a majority of occasions. I think it might also depend on what your genre of photography you mostly undertake I mostly shoot nature/wildlife so will generally use longer lenses, but maybe that style also reflects my personality happy to spend lengthy periods of time alone or with just one or two friends quietly watching and observing. However, using the Meyer-Briggs personality test many times over my professional business career I am consistently an introvert. Lately it's been the old (2003) EF 17-40 f/4 I've been using mostly. Nice and compact/ light and works for my needs. Doing more close up's drawing people into the bigger picture. Like a traffic sign big and close with an old church in the background. Wide angle seems to be working best for what I generally do. I've been doing more video and am a handheld shooter. I'm a extrovert, but like shooting alone and the best locations I see no other people.

    Based on this 'analysis' I am an introvert. According to Lightroom, I shoot the most with my Tamron 150-500mm. I only purchased it last year before a trip to Alaska. I tend to shoot to continuous or burst mode to freeze the action of a bird. Therefore, there are A LOT of photos with that lens.
    I do tend to like a more intimate image which often times leaves out the surrounding details. Very interesting indeed.

I'm not a very social guy. My favorite day is being out in the forest all by my lonesome with no one to bug me. If I hear people coming down a trail I'll sometimes even step off into the woods to let them pass. It's not that I don't like people it's just that I like me better than anyone else I know.

    I'm VERY introverted.
    On my Nikon Z5 which I picked up earlier this year, I only had a 50mm lens, so most of my photos this year are at 50mm.
    I did pick up the 24-70mm recently, and I'd say I do either use 24mm or 70mm most now, with 35mm being a close third.
    My previous camera (SL3) I used the 24mm pancake lens most, which works out to 38mm FF.
    So in general, I'd say I sit around the 35-50mm for the past few years as where I shoot most.

    And most of the time my 24-70mm is on my camera. And I use the 14-24mm more than I expected when I bought it.
    I also think the subject matters in this study. In landscape photography it's not about yourself, but the impressive vastness of the landscape.
    Prime 50 or 85mm in the studio.
    One lens ? ... might be the 28-300. My cheapest lens I ever bought and certainly not the best. Thought of selling it of at some point, but it seems it tags along every holiday I do. It''s light and compact and it gives me that extra length I sometimes need. I would take my 70-200 with me, but it's the 70-200 or my drone. So, the drone wins.

    For my current camera -- a Nikon D5100, which is APS-C -- my desert island lens is my Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 Contemporary. If I had a full frame digital camera, it'd likely be a 24-120 or 24-105 f/4. The lens I used most on my D5100 until I got the Sigma was the kit lens (18-55 f/3.5-5.6).
    Over the years, my most used focal lengths (outside of the extremes) have been 24mm (FF FOV 35-36mm) and 28mm (FF FOV 42mm), all on zoom lenses as I don't own any primes. I'm an introvert.

    Good fun. I suspect that one might have to use two variables - focal length and focus distance. I'd bet that macro photographers, wildlife buffs and landscapers who like compression shots are classic introverts. But what about street photographers? Standard or wide angle and trying to be invisible. Hmm. Here's my bet, photographers as a population skew towards introversion. We must be thoughtful, patient and voyeuristic by nature - don't you think? Keep 'em coming - love it.

  • @davep2945
    @davep2945 17 дней назад

    I can't say what focal length I use the absolute most but I have found that I rarely need more than 400MM and rarely less than 18MM. And because I'm a fan of compact and light weight do it all rigs at the expense of absolute precision I'd probably go with a Sony APS-C body and the Tamron 18-300 lens. I'm somewhat in between introvert and extrovert. I like my weekends open but have no problem making and keeping plans or being in crowds. I just don't want to be committed all the time.

    Extrovert. Interesting, I thought I shot more with a wide angle. But looks like it's about 30% ultrawide (i.e. 14-30 Nikon Z or 10-24 Fuji), 40% normal zoom (i.e. 24-120 Z or 16-55/16-80 Fuji), and 30% a random mix of telephoto (doggies) and 35/85mm primes (street and occasional portraits)

    I just use a smartphone and am an engineer so tend towards introvert. What I found interesting is I would have reversed it. To me zoom means up close and personal so extroverted whereas wide angel is distant, not too close, so introverted.

    Well, i think i am mostly introvert but I love both wide and telephoto lenses. The answer I thought of at the beginning of the video was "the lens with the widest range (like a Nikkor Z 28-400 for example). I can sacrifice some quality for diversity". So, i do not know if i fit in this theory. :D

    I mostly use wide and standard zooms (10-18 and 18-50 Sigma apsc and Sony 16-50 with wide angle wet lens underwater) and I am introverted. I communicate through imagery much better than through words: very much like a filmmaker.

    200-600mm and introvert. My ideal weekend only has plans to find some birds to photograph. But wait! I also love my 35mm and my 56mm primes when I’m around my kids or people. And my 20mm when I’m in the forest. So it depends on where I am and who I’m with!

    Favorite lens to use - retro 50mm prime. One lens for the rest of my life - 24-70mm. Actual most used lens 20-60mm lens. Most used focal length on that lens... 50 mm :P Introvert vs extrovert - introvert but I'm also a cinematographer so I tend to lean on mid to wide lenses so I can reveal bits of a whole story over time rather than zooming in on partial details via my lens. Zoom with yer feet, also I like fast primes so I can control the depth of field.

    I use an 18-300 zoom for most of my photography. Go figure, the most interesting thing for me is, you nailed me 100%. I own several prime lenses and several other zoom lenses, however I have several cameras from an old Minolta 7D to my favorite Nikon D750 and my extras D5000, D5300 and D700. Funny thing to me is I have an 18-300 for my Minolta and,I have an 18-300 that I use on my Nikon. I am usually alone with my camera when I go out though I might have someone I really care about with me, though I seldom take photos that include even those people. I like to photograph landscapes from both close up and on the grand side.

    Hmm - what an interesting theory. I tend to use my 16-50mm lens more than any of my others and, although I’m happy straying from a group for photos that catch my eye, and am comfortable on my own, I like meeting people and enjoy their company. One of my best photo friends uses her 100-400mm lens about 75-80% of the time when we go out shooting together and she is a self-confessed introvert!

    Mostly I use my 55-200mm lens (only have a 18-55 otherwise) and I'm definitely an introvert. So I suppose it's correct for me. Though I bet there's more to it. I think the part about including everything vs leaving some to the imagination may have to do with other aspects of personality as well, such as what people focus on. I like to focus on one thing at a time, so cropping items out fits in with that.

    I think it depends on the genre. I primarily sports, so I'm using long focal lengths (70-200 and 100-400) to get up close to people. (You could theoretically shoot sports up close with a 35mm or 50mm but if the sport is basketball or American football, you'd have to be on the court with the players and the longevity of your equipment (and you) might be severely limited.)

    I'm definitely an introvert, and my lens of choice would be a 100-400 zoom. Now, I have an idea for a future video. How do you know when it's time for a tech upgrade? I plonked along for a long time with my Canon Rebel XS and a couple of kit lenses. But recently I picked up a new (to me) 7D and my first prime lens. And I'm wondering why I waited so long.

  • @stevenanthony578

    I have 3 prime lenses that do not provide metadata--manual focus, no electrical connection with the camera--so the Lightroom metadata function isn't helpful. That said, I consider myself an introvert but my "only one lens" is my 25mm f/2, manual focus on my Sony a6600--so, a 37mm full-frame equivalent. But I use the combo "from the shadows." I'm not an in-your-face" photographer. I shoot from the hip, I'll shoot in silent mode or my favorite: I set my camera on the table at a cafe (outside table) and control the shutter with my phone, so people can't see that i'm making photos. The combo is very compact (it's the Ttartisans 25mm, for $80), very unobtrusive.

    Oh, I am definitely mostly introverted, as I mostly shoot as wide as I can & from a distance, most time. I was never one for being attending clubs/parties & I do not like public speaking (my channel here is virtually non-existent). Even while working in retail, I was never - and probably will never be - a cashier.

    My initial thought was that it’s more likely the connection is between personality and preferred genre with lens choice merely being highly correlated with genre and thus also with personality. Then, I thought about my own photography which, by volume at least, is mostly events. I have two modes: 1) candid (“spy shots”) and 2) in the mix (“‘Razzi shots”). I’m more comfortable being the spy, and it shows in my lens choice: nearly 2 to 1 in favor of telephoto over standard focal lengths.

    I love the compression of long focal length lenses, however, how do you combat the degrading of image due to atmospheric conditions? That to me, is the biggest reason for why I choose wider lenses.

    Interesting.. makes sense intuitively but I seem to cover more than one type. Per Capture One (and personal preference) I'm partial to wide angle primes/zooms, but also shoot a ton in the 50-55mm range (APSC portrait length), which I also love. Accordingly, I lean toward introversion but often switch "modes" as the situations dictate.

    My most-used lens is the Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 and usually at 80mm. This is also the lens I would want with me for its versatility and quality. I have no problem getting up close and personal with people for pictures, but I'm definitely not an extrovert.

    This is actually interesting, because while I'm not saying or suggesting you're wrong, I feel it's the opposite for me... I like to shoot wider focal lengths and while part of it is true (like telling the whole story, showing the full scene), the part about being extraverted for me isn't quite the truth, and actually probably far from it to be honest (now I understand these "assumptions" are not set in stone and that many people will probably have some but not all characteristics, and that's probably the case here with me). I will say though that I've sort of shifted away from wider focal lengths and have moved more towards more standard to telephoto focal lengths over the past few years, as I felt the wider focal lengths were getting a bit "boring" I guess. Now part of it may just be what I was taught and told early on (for example, shooting landscape with a wide angle lens was the most common way to photograph landscapes--not realy). Of course I do find myself sort of going between both but starting to gravitate more towards the tighter shots and keeping things more simple. And maybe when it comes to landscape, that's the progression we go through, and some continue on the wide angle path, while others may venture off to the more telephoto/intimate style, and some may just flip back and forth between the two. But either way, this was interesting for me to think about this. That being said, I still think my Z 24-200mm lens is probably the one I would pick if I had to only pick one as it goes from wide to telephoto (I don't shoot much beyond 200mm generally), but it would be one lens that could cover a wide range, versus say just a wide lens or just a telephoto lens. So I guess you could say I'm a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to focal length choices and it also depends on the particular task -- for travel, I do both, for landscapes, I do both but have been gravitating more twoards telephoto as i mentioned. For portraits I tend to prefer more telephoto (although we could say standard to telephoto, so say 50mm-200mm depending on the type of portrait/shot).
    About Lightroom, the funny thing is that when I find myself looking at a potential lens purchase, one of the things I do is I look at my library to see if I'd actaully use that focal length that much or not and use that as a guide as to whether the purchase may be worthwhile or not. Obviously, some lenses offer specific FLs for more specific purposes like a 105mm macro lens, so even if you don't shoot 105mm or macro that much, that would probably be an exception and you'd have to then look at how much you think you'd use it, but when I find myself considering the Z 100-400 for example, I look back at all of my favorite images and see how many did I really shoot at such FLs, and in reality, not many that I bothered to hold onto and keep (I did some, but they weren't that great so they likely ended up being trashed or are archived somewhere, but they didn't quite make the cut to be in my portfolio or even shared, so I've held off for now, and sort of glad I did this exercise because that is not a cheap lens (With a few exceptions, like the macro lens, I hate buying gear that I end up not using because it's money on the shelf, and I Feel somewhat the same way about the 100-400mm even though at some point, I may end up with one, as I can see some possibilities there, but that's also just imaginging what the possibilities would be versus reality and what I do shoot (I have rented it before, but in reality, didn't use it much for such trips and one reason I sort of kept talking myself out of it, so it's a useful tool in LR to see what FLs you shoot at and what lenses and cameras you use most).
