My husband helped to paint that beautiful mirror finished hull at John Brown’s Shipyards in Glasgow. His name was Archie Thomson and his painting buddy was Mick McManus. They worked on a narrow plank scaffold, up to 500 feet up in the air (so he said), and no OH&S, harnesses, rails or guards, only your own wits go keep you from falling to oblivion!
It was so high they took thermoses of tea and sandwiches up there for their lunch and tea breaks. If they’d climbed down the scaffold during their lunchtime the break would be over before they’d have time to eat and climb back up again!
So sad she was scrapped in 2003, this was the same year my husband died. He loved sailing, loved ships, loved the sea and his dying wish was to have a full burial at sea and this was the manner of funeral that I arranged for him, through a funeral home. God Rest You in Peace, Archie, I miss you every day…
