Now hubby will be happy there's one less thing he has to do! (Technically 3 things counting the new toilet tank flush system i replaced and did the yearly maintenance on the zero turn.)

    Very informative. Trying to figure out my problems.
    3 to 4 days ago water heater drained water from the pressure release valve (was told pressure was built up and it was better for it to flood my closet than explode), a few days later I had no water going to my toilet, then eventually water pressure was low throughout home, and we found out the washing machine is leaking, toilet needs a new float kit so its continuously running, and shower valve is now cracked(suspected from the pressure), later that same night after not using water all day, we had water pressure back to normal. The very next day, today, my faucet is spitting at me.. we know the hot water heater needs replaced because it doesn't get hot unless we hit the reset button which we have done for a month now so unsure where our problem lies... well or hot water heater

      Whenever the presser is too high, that usually means the presser switch at the well is bad and should be replaced.

    Hello Pete, could you help me out with my water tank? I'm very new with this, so I apologize if it my description is poor.
    The pressure switch was flipping on and off every few seconds, so I figured I needed to re-pressurize the tank. I turned off the power, turned off the water main, and drained the tank. Unfortunately my gauge was broken so I don't know what the actual pressure was. I did not know that I should have checked pressure before draining.
    After draining, I tried using a bicycle pump to get the tank pressurized. It's a 30 gallon tank on a 30-50 setting, so I was trying to get it to 28 PSI. I pumped for about 10 minutes and kept checking the pressure, but it was not increasing at all.
    I checked all my valves and connections to make sure they were closed. I can't find the problem. But my tank is not holding any pressurized air at all. Or am I just not pumping enough?
    Thank you for any feedback. And great video! Very helpful.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  7 лет назад

      I would try an air compressor, a manual bike pump just can't put enough air volume in the tank fast enough. But if it still doesn't hold air pressure then your bladder in the tank is broke and you'll need a new tank, which is probably why your presser switch is turning on and off when the water is being used in the house. Most likely you'll need a new presser tank which if it's a 30 gallon, they should have at the big box stores. Here's my video on replacing my presser tank. ruclips.net/video/O4SgbhFsxfY/видео.html

    Very well done video, one of the best and easiest to understand and I have watched dozens on this subject.
    Just being a dumb lawyer and not very mechanically inclined, I recently tried to fix a low pressure problem myself and I am not sure if I did so correctly or not so I would appreciate your advice and expertise.
    I emptied the tank and checked the air pressure and it read something like 18 PSI which I thought was low so I filled it to 38 on the same advice you gave here about a 40/60 switch. After I turned on the pump the air pressure read between 80 to 90 so I got scared that I did something wrong and reduced the air pressure a bit...before realizing that an increase in pressure may be normal.
    My questions are;
    1. What should the air pressure read after the bladder fills with water if I set it at 38 empty and was it a mistake to remove some air... Is it normal that it goes up to 80 or 90 like that ?
    2. If the SWITCH says it is a preset 20/40, am I wrong to think that it was adjusted to 40/60 and should I reset the whole thing again to 20/40 or leave well enough alone?
    My pressure switch says it is a 20/40 preset but I think my plumber adjusted it to 40/60 because of the distance from my submersible pump and I always seem to rememer seeing the GUAGE always reading between 40 to 60...but maybe I am wrong.
    Thanks for any advice you may offer.
    Cheers
    Leon

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  2 года назад +1

      Yes if your switch was adjusted to be 40/60 then the tank air presser should be set at 38psi. don't worry about the presser in the tank when it's filling with water, Just make sure when you check the air presser in the tank that it has no water in it and the pump is off. If you're not sure if the switch was adjusted, then just fill the presser tank to 18psi and see if it runs good. But I have to tell you that I would never have a 20/40 presser switch, it's just too low of presser for my liking.

      @@petebeasttexashomesteading Hi Pete, Thanks for your rapid response...much appreciated and it did clearly answer the one puzzling question I had about it being okay if the air pressure reads much higher when the bladder is full. I also think you are right in agreeing with me that even though my switch siad it was preset to 20/40, my installer did probably adjust it to 40/60.
      Consequently, I will leave well enough alone...for now. Your video was one of the best of the hundreds I have watched...simple and straight forward and good video production qualities and composition.
      Thanks again. You are now entitled to a free LEGAL question.

    Nice video, only issue I see was your pressure switch box should have had cable retainer clamps, The way it is the wires could end up shorting to the case or being pulled off, you need two of the them.

  • @tonistromer6265
    @tonistromer6265 6 лет назад

    Mr Pete your ideo was very easy to understand. I totally followed it but I don't have enuff water pressure to even take a shower. I did everything you said twice. I was wondering should the tank gauge and my pressure gauge reading on top of tank be the same or should the top of the tank read 2 lbs less. right now they both read 41.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  6 лет назад

      The only thing the tank does is keep your pump from coming on and off every time you turn on the water. The tank air pressure should be 2 pounds less then the low on your pressure switch 38psi in tank if you have a 40/60 psi switch. I would replace the pressure switch and make sure where it threads into the threaded hole is clean and free from rust or any type of blockage in the threaded hole and the switch.. Make sure you're getting 120 volts on each hot wire and make sure the ground wire is grounded and tight. If that all checks good, then you might be looking at replacing the pump.

    • @bigpardner
      @bigpardner 5 лет назад

      Was the pump turned off and the tank empty of all water when you are getting 41 PSI? Or was everything connected as usual and holding steady at 41 PSI on both the tank air pressure and water pressure? As has been stated, the empty tank air pressure should be 2-3 PSI less than the cut on pressure. But when pressurized with water I am thinking the two readings should be the same. It is nice to know your two gauges agree.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  5 лет назад

      It sound like you need to change the check valve. The check valve is a one way valve the keeps the water from going back down the well. When the pump reached it's set presser and shuts off, the water presser fell to zero because the check valve is bad and the water presser went back down the well. It should be located immediately after the well casing and before the presser switch. Hope this helps.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading

    Hi again Pete....I keep watching this because your setup looks very logical. I did get the gauge and switch replaced today.
    But I would like to build the extension for the switch like you did. Has it worked ok with the switch not being right up against the tank like at first?
    Secondly...that looks like you have put a filter on the line from the tank to the house.
    What I think is causing a problem for me is I have a holding tank that the well pumps into and then it goes to the pressure tank and house.
    I am thinking small dirt or something from storms or such get under the lid on the holding tank into the tank.
    I would like to insert a filter like you have between the holding tank and the pressure tank.
    Are you satisfied with your filter? If so, could you post the brand and where you get yours?
    Thanks some more. Jesus bless.

      Tina Bartolotta Make sure the air pressure in the tank was set at 28 psi before there was any water pressure in the tank. You also need to see when the pressure switch clicks on 30 psi and off 50 psi. If the tank pressure was set correctly in the beginning, and you don't have correct water pressure still, then it might be a bad pressure switch.

      The presser switch should maintain your water pressure between 40 and 60psi and make a clicking sound when it gets below 40psi and again at 60psi. That clicking sound is the contacts closing and opening turning the pump on and off. If the pressure is always low, then it might be your pressure switch.

    So I purchased a new well tank about a month ago and realized a few days ago, that may have not been my issue. My water pressure started fluctuating again, to the point where it was so sporadic it made taking a shower a royal pia. So I went ahead and purchased a new 30/50 pressure switch (Which I probably should have done first), and realized when I took the old one off, that the contacts were black and remained open. So I figured, bad switch right? okay. My confusion comes in here: I have a 30/50 switch that cuts on at around 30. But, my tank that I purchased from Lowe's has this red tag on it stating that the tank has been pre-charged to 25psi and that I need to make sure the tank is 2 psi below "pump start-up pressure". So does that mean I need to set my tank to 28 psi since my switch is a 30/50? or do I need to set it to 26 psi since the instructions in the manual had the cut on pressure at 28? I am so confused right now and I am probably over thinking it. I just want to make sure I do this correctly and not have to go through this again. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you. --Chris

      Congratulations on your country home, hope it came with some acreage so you can grow most of your food. Being that the house is 20 years old, you'll have to find out how old the well pump is. A submersible pump might last 12 to 15 years but not that expensive to replace. Is the septic system a drain field type or an aerobic septic system? The drain field type could last 15 to 20 years and very expensive to replace and an aerobic septic system is dependent on the air pump to oxygenate the waste water, and water pump to pump out the clean waste water to sprinkler heads on to your lawn. An aerobic septic system tank could last 40 years or more but is dependent on the air and water pump in the tanks but not expensive to replace those pumps. Hope this helps.

      Pete B. Thanks Pete, I think its the old style drainage type (no air pump) so I guess I will be replacing the septic sooner than later and
      I'm guessing the well pump was replaced somewhere in the past few years. I'm going to get the details from the sellers on our final walk through. We have 2 acres but have some limitations on growing food. No livestock allowed.
      I greatly appreciate your help Pete! Thanks again!

      Two acres is plenty of room, you can have a huge garden. I would recommend adding (flushing) good septic type bacteria like Rid-X down the toilet every month. The bacteria will eat, break down and clean waste like oils & grease, protein, and paper and keep your septic drain field clean so it will last much longer. Enjoy your new home.

    You Don’t ever put a Valve of any kind between you Pump and Pressure Switch. That’s just asking for trouble, when someone closes the valve, and the pump keeps running, because the switch can’t sense the water pressure. Also I will only use the Pressure Switches that have the Reset Lever on it, that way if a pipe breaks and the pressure drops too far below the Cut-in, it will shut the pump off and can help protect from a Flooded house and a Burned up pump. It’s an Electric Code Violation, not having a Service Disconnect close to the pressure switch.

  • @kdmq
    @kdmq 6 лет назад +4

    Good job except I would not use that valve and just fight with depressurizing next time. The reasoning is that if the valve ever clogs in service, the switch will see zero psi all the time and will overpressurize the system potentially causing the tank to go up through your house like a rocket. Not worth the risk for an extra half hour to drain the tank whenever you gotta change the switch.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading

      The two screws on the right is one leg and the two screws on the left is another leg. Each leg has a hot going in and a wire going out to the pump. You can put the two hot wires on the middle screws and two wires on the outer screws to the pump or vice versa. It's just a switch that directs power to the pump.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading

    I am very much a novice plumber (to put it gently). I changed the pressure switch a couple of weeks ago. It was short cycling. To fix the problem, to make a long story short, simply draining the tank would have been difficult, so I shut the pump off and pumped some air into the bladder to force the water out through the lowest gravity spigot in the house. I got just about all of the water out of it. Please forgive my potential ignorance here, but I was then somewhat fearful of rupturing the bladder by over inflating. I therefor inflated it to 28 lb (a 30-50 switch) with all of the spigots closed. Would it have been OK or best to have done so with one of them opened?
    Thanks for posting stuff like this for people with limited knowledge on topics like this, such as myself and answering questions. God bless.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  2 года назад +1

      You did good, just shut the pump off, let the pressure out of the tank by opening a faucet. Then you'll be able to change the pressure switch. You then fill the pressure tank with air to 28 psi for a 30-50 switch 38 for a 40-60 switch. It's probably not necessary to leave a faucet open when filling with air but it won't hurt either.

    Never ever install any valve between your Well Pump and your Pressure Switch. If the Valve gets closed, during operation, you could have a run away pump. This could over pressure the system, and rupture a pipe in your house. It could also burn your pump up, from over pressurization, stalling the pump motor. Also I do not recommend that pressure switch. Get a Low Pressure, Manual Reset Switch, such as a Pumptrol FSG2J24M4BP. The switch has a little Silver Colored Lever on the side to reset the system after a pressure loss. If a pipe should rupture during normal use, this added feature, could turn major flooding into minor water damage.
