toby and the rest of the HR branch reports directly to corporate, so Michael has no direct authority over him, which makes him angry.
I always imagined that Toby was the Scranton strangler, and Michael was the only person to know, deep down, that Toby was hiding a monster. It's not something he could really articulate to others, and he didn't actually make the strangler connection, but he knew something was there...
Even though him having no control over corporate is way simpler and makes way more sense 😂
Idk of him working in hr can be the only reason considering that he marries the next hr rep. That might be part of it but there’s probably something else there

The show got it wrong when they made roby actually be weird in the later seasons. Like the whole point was he was just a harmless quiet awkward guy who did nothing for Michael to hate him yet then they made him actually seem odd and easy to dislike
He hates the fact that he can't fire him because he hates him, but that only contributes and is not the main source of his hatred. I'd say that he hates him primarily because he doesn't trust him, because his job is practically to ruin Michael's mission of cheering everyone up and doing all the crazy stuff he does and report them to other people he doesn't trust. I've also thought about the possibility that Michael hates him because his personality reminds him of someone, possibly his step father, maybe someone else he really hated as a kid

@orpheus Michael sees him as the "Fun Sponge". Like @cleck_ said, Toby is HR and Michael loves to make jokes around the workplace that may not be to the humour of the person the joke is about. Toby will always quietly pull him aside and just tell him "not to send emails like that" or to "be more mindful of how people will feel at the things he says" and stuff like that. Basically, he's like Michael's antithesis. Michael loves to be loud, spontaneous and loves to push the boundaries every once in a while, whereas Toby is always almost inaudibly quiet, structured and ordered and obviously makes sure everyone knows the rules of the workplace.
Have you seen that clip where Michael just goes on a spiteful rant to Toby and says "Why are you the way that you are? Honestly, whenever I try to do something _fun_ or _exciting_ you make it not that way...I despise so much about the things you choose to be"? That's pretty much how Michael feels about Toby
Yeah, I mean, that's his job. Any amateur actor could switch facial expressions like this. It's not like this was prime Marlon Brando
Toby so casually and politely saying,
“Oh hi, Mich-“ only to be abruptly greeted back by Michael’s anguished face and deadpan screech of,
“NOO!” has got to be one of the funniest and most memorable moments from this show 😂
Toby always wanted to be a friend to Michael and never betrayed him. I learned that sometimes it's better not to try, it's chemistry.

Many times, when scripts are written for specific already proven actors they leave holes there for the actor to fill. I remember a producer of Columbo saying that he would tell some of the writers not to write Columbo's catch phrases because Peter Falk knew better than them where and how to say them. Same with Robin Williams on "Mork and Mindy."

The best one was when Michael was secretly dating Pam's mom and Jim knew and asked him not to tell her but of course Michael rapidly gave Pam clues and right when he was about to tell Pam the whole truth Jim - waiting for the inevitable to happen - stared at the camera in what can only be described as a mixture of intense desperation and profound resignation.
To me the best one so far (I'm at season 5 atm) is when Andy gets pranked with his phone and breaks the wall. Jim's reaction is just beautiful.

I don't think he is. You can see genuine concern on Jim's face when he realizes that Michael's unaware of Toby's return, and I believe that's because he knows that Michael's reaction to Toby's return will negatively affect both his and the entire office's work experience for at least a week.
