    They routed the wires under the pickguard because on a normal SG they drill the hole between the two pickup cavities through the neck pocket with a long drill bit before the neck is inserted. Since this is a neck through construction, you aren't able to drill a hole between the pickup cavities because you can't get a shallow enough of an angle with the drill bit without being able to go through the neck pocket.

    • @hkguitar1984

      The neck through construction is the way to go on an SG. That thin body and shallow neck tenon can sometimes be problematic.
      I think this would be great in a 6-String version or even a Baritone model. I thought the tobacco finish looked great.

    • @honkytonkinson9787
      @honkytonkinson9787 2 года назад

      I wonder if they could have drilled the same hole from the strap button on the bottom, and then plug the hole to put the strap button in. They could even remove a plug from the body, drill the hole, and then fill the hole with the plug

    • @vanshankguitars

      They could drill the holes mid plank edge before glue up

    I actually really dig the SG body style with the Firebird neck-thru raised middle platform thing, I think it works extremely well on an aesthetic level. Would be cool to see Gibson do a 6 string version with the same stylings, especially with that sunburst finish. That is *chefs kiss* for me.

    A neck-through 12-string SG is insanely cool. Add a lyre tailpiece and it would be one of the coolest guitars on the planet.

    I had a Charvel Surfcaster 12 with the Rickenbacker style tuners. Super neck heavy (since the body was chambered!) Also tried out Reverend’s Airwave 12, again chambered body + 12 locking tuners = neck dive for days. Now I have a Danelectro 12, still a little neck heavy, but not as bad as the other two.

    • @julosx
      @julosx 2 года назад +1

      The ES-335 is possibly the least neck heavy of them all, it features the best balance despite the loooong size of the headstock.

    I’m definitely in the “no fret nibs” camp. I think it looks a lot better without them, which is why I love so many of the MIJ’s. To me it just looks lazy, like they painted over the frets. Much nicer and cleaner without them, also makes refrets easier.

    • @joermnyc
      @joermnyc 2 года назад +1

      Yes, plus if the binding pulls away from the fretboard (due to wood shrinking), then there’s a gap that strings can get caught in!

    Jay Turser sold a clone of the Gibson 2011 50th Anniversary 12-string SG, in 2010-2011. They were made by Samick in China, and are quite nice for the price you will pay today, which is something like 1/15 of what one of these neck-through 2016 Gibsons will run you. DeArmond also sold 12-string S-73 SG's for a time.

    Hi Austin, I just found your SG 12 neck-through review. Very interesting because I obviously have one of the earlier ones in tobacco burst which is flawless concerning the cavity and even the pickguard is in the right position to not interfere with the poker chip. I can send you a photo if you're interested. Sounds fantastic and I play this thing quite a bit. And with a custom set of NYXLs it keeps being a 12-string because you almost can't break the high G-string ... ;)

    The trick to tuning a 12 string before Snarks and such: Tune the regular tuned 6 strings E to e across the fingerboard, then tune the octave and unison strings to the already tuned 6 strings.

    Yep...Rickenbacker (not a fan of their headstock!), EDS1275, but mostly a semi-hollow Gretsch style is what I prefer. Lots of that classic jangle with the Foil-style humbuckers. I ended up getting the Eastwood Classic 12 and couldn't be happier!

    Those SG guitars have the body beveling that I LOVE! Where the bevel is thin and rounded where it rests on your stomach or under your arm if you're Angus Young lol! I don't know why they don't all have that same beveling...and I have no idea why only some do but it's really frustrating that they are not all that way. So comfortable compared to the thicker bevel and sharper edges on most other SG guitars. Maybe I'll just sand one of mine down and refinish it so it's the way I want!

  • @markcampbell7554

    I always liked the sound of a 12 string guitar but they're not really a guitar I can find myself playing a lot. They're good for certain thing's but I prefer just about any good 6 string over them. I liked both of the SG 12 string's you had on here tonight and I think you should keep both of them. Finding a 12 string guitar with good playing action is hard but I think Gibson and Taylor make some of the best 12 string's. Rickenbackers sound good, but I really don't like the necks on any of their guitar's with the exception being the 4000 bass series.

    Even though I own a Yamaha FJ230 12 string acoustic I can honestly say I never heard or even tried to play Nirvana or Cream on it. Depending on what you played in distortion mode certain songs you could barely tell it was a 12 string. I'd save some of them dark songs for one of your Halloween themed episodes. Especially one that kind of sounded like one horror movie them.

    The best twelve string electric I’ve played was a 66 or 67 ES-335 in 🍒 finish. It was hands down the best feeling and sounding 12 I’ve ever played. Granted I’ve only ever played about 15 different twelve string electric guitars- but that one was incredible. It didn’t have that plunky Rickenbacker thing going on- it just had a real pure twelve string sound. Hard to describe it without hearing & playing it in person

    the interesting aspect of the rick design was that the designers brief was to keep it all within the standard layout , so the six string neck and head , i think its a brilliant design and clearly the reason behind the sound , i also enjoyed a Gretsch 12 and of course the Johnny winter fender 12 which are great players
    i suggest that (like the rick ) a through neck makes a better platform for the tension that twelve strings puts a neck under ?

  • @dublev78

    Rics also string with the fat string first (low e). Other guitars use the thin string first. That’s why 12 string rics sound so iconic.

    if you are tempted don't forget to include the price of an aftermarket 12 saddle bridge for them ($150-$300) - the 6 string 6 saddle bridge starts sounding pretty bad up near the 8th fret due to the different compensation needed for the thin string of the octave pairs so if you want to play up the top end, especially chords, you need this bridge repalcement.

    I’ve always wondered why Gibson never made an SG 12-string back in the day. Yes, they had the Firebird 12 and the SG-shaped Melody Maker 12, but an SG Standard 12 seems like a no-brainer. The neck-through construction on these is a great feature-you can’t have too much stability on a 12-string! The sunburst one is gorgeous-Gibson shoud offer that finish as an option on SGs generally. C’mon, Gibson-put the neck-through SG 12 back in the line as a regular production model. (And please use a 12-saddle bridge!) I want one of these things!

    Back the the 1970's all that I saw hanging on the walls were 12 string ES335s, and the doubleneck SG used by Jimmy Page. But that SG 12 string neck through is pretty enough that I'd consider using it with only using 6 strings on it as a main guitar! That 12 string needs a matching 6 string neck through SG. Gibson ought to make some 6 string neck through SGs.

    As collectable guitars go, , this one is desirable to me. For no other reason than I already knew it existed from a catalog table book with guitar porn in full glossy pictures. But I've never seen one. Just wanted it since I saw it in the book. I'd have to be a rockstar to get Gibson to make this again as a "signature". The Honeyburst is beautiful. As far as the body construction and how it differs attaching the sidewings to the through-neck.
    The Firebird uses the "V" shape to increase the surface area for the glued mating surfaces.
    I believe these modern SG use a couple of small side mortise and tenon joints as this type of construction is easily accomplished using modern CNC manufacturing.
    As stated in my other comment, the neck-through construction for a 12-String SG makes total sense given the problematic SG neck joint history.

    • @joermnyc
      @joermnyc 2 года назад +1

      Yes, I was expecting some kind of hidden joinery. The Original Firebirds were notoriously expensive to make, that’s why they switched to the “Reverse” body after a few years of losing money. Modern CNC tech would probably solve all the issues they were having, but the V joint is historic and fans expect it.

    • @hkguitar1984
      @hkguitar1984 2 года назад +2

      Greetings,@@julosx!
      You would be surprised how useful the coil splitting is, I have several Epiphone Les Paul and SG’s with that option and it really gives me some great sound options.
      Next month I am also adding to my collection, an Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul that has Fishman Fluence pickups with three different settings for each pickup. It also has 24 frets and an ebony fretboard, with special mother of pearl and abalone inlays. I have been waiting two years for it to arrive, it had gotten held up in shipping due to the pandemic.
      I am not sure if Austin has reviewed the Prophecy Series Epiphone Guitars yet, but I look forward to seeing that review on the Trogly’s Guitar channel here on RUclips.
      Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨

    These are both strung like my Epi Hummingbird 12 string but that appears to be the opposite of the Rickenbackers. Gibson: small string on top of the larger lower octave strings...the Ricks the opposite. Not having played a Gibson or Epiphone back to back with a Rickenbacker, not sure what that does to the sound of the guitar or if it makes a difference in how you fret them.

    Technically it’s tuned higher and lower, but in the musical world it’s tuned with the large stings in standard, and the smaller one octave higher( if you understand strings) I still love the way they sound, thanks for demonstrating this specimen for us 😁

    12vstring Gibson, my first thought was that I'd have to spend twice as long tuning the G!

    I love those SG 12 strings! They're both gorgeous, but that red...😍 Come on now, Trogmeister, I know a ballpark figure that you paid for the red one. 😉

    I've got some Firebird pickups in humbucker housing (Magneto Design Labs), which are going on my Epiphone Korina (6.5 pounds) Flying V, then I'll have a "flying bird", one of those should get Firebird pickups too?

    With all the issues that Gibson has with headstocks breaking off on the six string guitars. a person would think that the headstock would break off on the twelve string guitars. by simply putting them on the guitar. I could just imagine a person bringing the guitar up to tune. and the headstock snapping off and hitting them in the head or something like that. after all a person probably wouldn't want to press their luck with a twelve string Gibson.
