  • CAF Historian Brad Pilgrim shares his recent experience flying the Messerschmitt Me 109 with Ultimate Warbird Flights in Northampton, England. This very aircraft, a Hispano Buchon, was once owned by Connie Edwards. Pilgrim remembers it as a kid and always wanted to fly in it. Last Christmas, Pilgrim’s fiancé Mary gave Brad a certificate to take that flight!

Are there plans for an episode that covers Connie's history with the CAF?
I have the sentimental watery eyes going on this episode, not only for Brad's story (which is awesome), but also that the Texas parts of this story are where I grew up (and living at again). Looking due West from my porch, on the other side of a cotton field, are the hangers and castle.
I remember Connie and Tex flying PBY's, the Albatross, and the crop dusters just a little higher over my parent's house because of the trees.
Never met Connie, or went over to the hangers. I'm kicking myself for that.

Brad, one last thought for you.........1968 Battle of Britain movie ,........The FEW ,stood up and applauded at the end of the movie,...........most were in the cinema,....... General Adolf Galand, .......man he was such perfect german gentleman, .......he inspired a lot of pilots to open their hearts after the war .....him and robert Stanford tuck ...became best friends after the war..... Douglas badder ,this is your life BBc ,...... general galland came over just to speak about his war time flights and how douglass asked to sit in gallands 109 on the German airfield after getting shot down ...galland said ok...once badder was seated in the cockpit ..he asked if he could take it up for a few laps ...galland laughing said ...oh i would get into too much trouble and i would have to shoot you down again..............think about yhis event during 1940............ amazing REAL MEN .. enemy's but still sense of humour. And total respect for each other ....then your Connie comes along and the rest is history...........love you bro.....x keep living your dreams and look after mary

Australian engineer/Pilot, "BRAD", ...when they made the movie ,in 1968,9..."Battle of Britain, they made a small Colour movie book that was released with the movie, in the book it showed the complete making of the movie with all , Connie and the boys from Texas and all the actors and all ..the Battle of Britain pilots with a spitfire & lord Dowding in his wheel chair..etc the book was about 20 pages ,full colour ,made specifically to show how the whole movie was made .......I have my copy of it still.........priceless............I became a pilot , .....my own life has been 42 years in engineering......now at 60 I'm in the process of building my own ",replica Me 109 , with a Mercedes Benz engine ,in Major Helmut Wicks aircraft ......I too think the Me 109 Emil ....is the coolest war bird ever built......major Wicks Middle name was ",Emil",.......I also have from 1940 the full list of every single pilot ,name rank & serial number who flew in the Battle of Britain and who lived and died and age ....priceless list of the Few..........Brad..............I understand just how you feel with the emotional flight over England in ,Willys finest ............plus ..........Mary......well she is just a 10/10...........Brad , ...........those who understand,....the whole period of history we know how close we came to all speaking German today.......oh.....
    I drive a Mercedes Benz C180kompressor..( Super charged),...yep I get it..!!!

Australia has replica Spitfires here all hand built with LS Chev engines ,we have also our ultralights with Jabiru motor in them......we have an old hand made Me 109 with a Leyland V8 it's great but ....rough...........I'm building a Replica Me109 Emil , with a Mercedes Benz Kompressor engine....for some German noise .....the Me109 is being done in all Aluminium and about 85%scale ...hand made....buy myself ......I thought it was time I put a German Me109 into Ozie Sky's ......we had a Few 190 with radial ....built by the late Mr Terry kronk...he built his spit , with his chev, and his mustang that he died in on take off...he was doing a Replica Mosquito but it's standing alone out doors now , unfinished......plus a few other aircraft he built......but my Me 109e .....will be RAA registered in Australia .......but I was also an engine reconditioning...so I can put some Grunt & HP into a RAA and get that Super charger whistle....but the Emil didn't have the blower but hey...........stuff the purist .....what have they done ..lol

I note the rudder is bigger then the original Spanish built rudder. It looks like a K rudder, only bigger.

Tom Cruise even looked at remaking the 1968 Battle of Britain ,but he relize it couldn't be done , ....... because he had no aircraft .....and CGI wont do this movie justice...............Tom , has his P51D red tails ...he gets it all.......lest we forget.

Still not a proper canopy on the two seat trainer. The side windows were bumped out for better foward visibility from the back seat. There is a two seater in Germany with the correct canopy.
