Sound judgement. I 've been rescuing cats for years and on the occasional situation when trapping, never put back out a friendly stray cat. My cat Tuka FIV +, was outside for 2 years til my friend took him in because he was sick dirty and depressed. He had been trying to become part of a colony to get food but got beaten up. It took awhile for him to get better but hes be fine for 10 years. My special cat!

@@JestaLemon After being a cat shelter volunteer for 10 years, I've watched all of the cats get adopted in time. Not all shelters euthanize. An Article was put out that if ONLY 1% of the Population Adopted instead of Buying from Backyard Breeders, Pet Shops, Puppy Mills, etc that all the Animals in the Shelters would be Adopted. That's 1%!!
Owners are definitely allowed in New Hampshire to let their cats go in and outdoors. But I agree that if they are not neutered and spayed, they absolutely should not be let out.
Ours went from about twenty or so ferals to 2 and both are fixed. ( thru tnr) over time it works and some cats that were in the feral colony were in fact not feral so when they got fixed and rabies shots they got homes right after. So it worked out great for yhd cats and the humans!

So are they saying they will defy the court’s ruling until they have dragged it out for every last possible appeal? I didn’t think that was how the law works.
I understand the position of both sides. It is a big undertaking to now be responsible for caring for and finding homes for another population of cats. Since it was postulated these nice adoptable cats might be social in their community and that's why they are friendly, maybe advertising the friendly cat near it's location where it was found and say how it is looking for a home and has been picked up by the shelter. Maybe people in the community didn't know they should take the cat in, thinking it belonged to someone else? I think it would be reasonable to allow the community cats program to slowly take on this responsibility, with a plan to be at bringing in 100 percent of kind cats to the adoption process by a certain date.
Outdoor cats should be against the law. I love cats, but our neighbors took another neighbors cat while they were out of town at a funeral, and dumped it 3 miles from their home. They got Mozart back because his collar with tag was left on.
Evil neighbors doing evil things doesn't justify making it illegal for cats to be outdoors. I keep mine indoors, and they all came from the neighborhood. They picked my home to live in. There are predators and contagious, deadly diseases outdoors (FIV, FeLV, permanent viral diseases, as well as acute viral diseases that may quickly become deadly). But if people choose to let their cats roam and come home, it's their right, and the neighbors had better respect that.
No, the humane society does NOT view homeless cats as feral. Only the ones who no matter how much you try, will never go anywhere near you. They might have been domesticated at one time, but then they were either traumatized by humans or kicked out and abandoned and living in the wild for so long, there's no going back. It's so easy for people to judge, but anyone who has rescued feral cats knows that you can't keep them in your home, it completely stresses and they will do anything to get out. What you do is find an isolated preferably wooded area where nobody will bother them and make shelters out of cardboard boxes, or whatever supplies and abilities to make small houses you have. Then put blankets in them and feed and give them water every day at the same time. How many people on this site have dedicated themselves to feral cats? It doesn't sound like too many. It's a lot more work to take care of ferals than it is to judge.
@@michellemartin85It definitely depends on the cat. I have a feral that I trapped and she was spayed/vaccs. She rarely let's me touch her and usually only at feed time. My other feral took two years to catch! Guess where he is now? Beside me on the couch as I type this. He follows me everywhere and I can pick him up. Clip his nails. Bath him. It's amazing how far he has come! 😊
@@JuniperandSage I 100% agree that it depends upon the cat. All the ferals that I care for get spayed and neutered. Some of them have come around and I slowly introduced them to the home. But they were young members of the colony (I was given approximate ages by the vets). I finally had a doggie door cut into my back door, so they could come and go as they please. Most of them did come in from the cold and did eventually bond to me. But there were a few that never entered my home and only got anywhere close to me during feeding time. I don't think it was a coincidence that they were the older ones. I initially tried to keep all of them in the home and it was a stressful disaster for all of us.
I don’t agree with this, some friendly cats thrive outside and belong outside because that’s where they want to be. Animals are not all meant to be locked inside. Even cats who would perish in the living outdoors should enjoy some monitored safe outdoor time. I think the whole point of spaying and neutering them is enough towards the cause against animal abandonment. Now I wanna know what’s expected to happen to a cat if it never gets adopted with this rule applied. Euthanasia? That’s more cruel than giving an animal with the instincts to live outdoors a chance to live outdoors. In the world we live in- getting hit by a car as animal that lives outdoors, is much more of a natural cause than euthanasia. Maybe if they wanted to adopt the prison cat projects or something allowing inmates to adopt cats for their own behavioral rehabilitation or something that would be a win but saying no don’t release it let it live in a cage or a room until we have to put it down- that’s cruel
Who the heck thought that was a good idea?! That makes no sense. So basically they sent cats out who know know nothing about surging like a feral cat?!
TNR for feral communities seems most reasonable, otherwise over burdened shelters are now going to become insanely difficult to manage. An abandoned cat - that never lived under care of humans should never be forced outside!
We need stricter filtering of adoption. Just a little more education and support potential adoption candidates-ESPECIALLY regarding healthy foods and vitamins and low cost vaccinations so that issues may be avoided when it comes to caring responsibilities.
If they had a large holding area where cats could interact with each other and still be outdoors this would attract potential adopters. All cats should be given shelter during extreme weather but the typical shelter facility is barbaric and deeply traumatizing to cats.
I agree adoptable cats should not be left outside to fend for themselves. There are all sorts of danger outside. People take them to feed their snakes, some just get easire out of abusing them & torturing them to death, they get poisoned, hit by cars, the list 9f dangers is long. These people really don't care about the well being of the animals that are doing this.
This should have never had to be governed by the judicial system this is apart.of what the humane society job is but now they're forced to do right by these sweet babies before it's too late and like caretakers like myself that feed colonies and rescue babies that are friendly to be adopted here in GA we get kick back as far as assistance with care spaying/neutering vaccinations instead of these services being free we're charged. I myself can prove i rescue strays ferals and community cats so I need the help but force to pay out of pocket for especially medical bills no discount for helping with their job that they get paid to do. It's a terrible system that needs to be fix because it's causing these babies to suffer because a lot of us that rescue can't get the assistance we need . Sometimes I feel punished for helping these babies. Which is a shame
Could not agree more. In our Texas town they are also turning adoptable cats out to fend for themselves to make room for dogs which can't roam loose. The shelter is now over run with dogs and has only a very few cats for adoption. I understand the space limitations, but this is not a fair solution.
I have to agree with the judge on this one because I've seen too many tamed cats who've had homes and then were thrown out to the cold to defend for themselves and are unable to if a cat is friendly, and Tame it should be put up for adoption not released
How many ferals have you helped? It takes years to get them domesticated. I got 2 to trust me and come into my house with my indoors. It is NOT easy. I feed them and try to get the tamer ones to get fixed. A lot of vets won't take them if they are wild. 😢 if everyone would just try to help them a little that would be great. Most people just sit on their rear ends complaining and don't help.
If you've ever been involved with TNR and a rescue you would no that not all feral cats can stay indoors. Everyone involved does they best they can for feral cats. The sad thing is there are way more cats than there are homes. The best that can be done for truly feral cats is to try to keep them healthy but teturn them to their colony. Yes, it's dangerous. Unless you are offering to open a sanctuary for them and pay for their medical costs ,upkeep of the sanctuary etc then you should know that most towns do not have the funding to do what you suggest, if they did animals would never have to be euthanized. In an ideal world that would be wonderful but we don't live in an ideal world.
Most love to live outdoors, have to remember we need cats outdoors, they keep mice away, just remember history, they took all cats away then the Black death came ,we need cats outdoors
You are so wrong. Cats do NOT do good outside, especially ones that have been in homes. They usually starve to death, or get eaten by wild animals ( coyotes, etc). Please do your research.
@@KyneburgheHannahYou need to learn a lot about Medieval history….. And sadly, part of that history is that cats were both adored and hated by various human groups.
I have several feral cats that live in my house with me. They are really happy here, knowing they are in a safe, warm, dry place to live. Most of them even enjoy getting attention from me. Miss Midnight is this super feral cat (she shows the vet that), but at home, she just LOVES to get stroked and rub her face on me. Her little brother Mr Tabby, at the vet is all scared and has hiss tail tucked between hiss legs, but comes home and sleeps on my bed with me on cold nights, showing me some SERIOUS feral trust! Miss Murder Mittens lets me touch her and even flea comb her, but, vet visits? She goes absolutely BALLISTIC! She fights the vet. So, even a lot of feral cats can be domesticated. Miss Midnight was 3 years old when she was brought in (her kittens needed my help), that was nearly 5 years ago now and she never asked to go outside...ever!
I have dealt with the catch and release programs in several states and each year I see these cats having litters of at least 5 kittens. Two times the kittens were starving and so sick they were put down. Unless there is a neighbor putting out food, which is supposed to be against city ordinance, cats suffer. I've seen cats with skin and eyes torn out from territory fights. There is nothing I've seen humane about these programs.
Thank you Judge! These do golfers keep dumping these poor TNR cats in my neighborhood and they expect people to shelter and feed them. Most of them end up dead in a year or less. The poor cats come to my door trying to come in with a look of desperation in their eyes. It’s heartbreaking! I wish they’d stop it in Philadelphia too.
This is still a step forward, so focus on this positive. Life isn’t always fair, but people like this attorney, like bad owners will always be around-be thankful for the former.
Thank you, Judge, for speaking up for cats. However, at the same time, feral cats that are friendly should be labeled as "Friendly but possibly Feral" as I got a cat like that here in Washington and it was not domesticated and tore up my apartment and fought the newborn cats.
In Istanbul, Turkey, they revere feral cats, mostly as agents to keep the rodent populations down. They are everywhere outdoors and indoors and essentially all friendly, knowing that humans will often feed them. People leave little shelters for them, but few people actually "own" a cat. They have their hiding places and hang out at parks and on the streets and sidewalks. Residents are almost always kind to them.
If it's going to make it harder for the shelter to spay/neuter strays then release them, I feel the shelter should decide if they can handle that. They can't possible take in all those cats.
I would have to say I don't believe in feral cats because I have done wildlife rescue in Florida for 20 years and I have six cats of my own and I use this for an example if you're in the mall and someone comes up to give you a big fat hug or or to pick you up and you don't know them you're probably going to freak out to defend yourself but after a while you become friends it's totally different. Same thing with all animals. I totally agree they should not be put back out I was just talking to my husband about this the other day. You bring them in fix them give them a safe place for several days and then throw them back out on their own and it's awful I totally agree with what he's saying I just wanted to bring light on the feral subject I think it just takes time to get to know one another. I have befriended the wackiest cats that no one would take interest in and they are so lovable. Thank you sir for speaking the truth and helping the animals

They should give free spay or neuter . People can afford the vet anymore, so they just go without getting it done.
Yes bc not many shelters are No Kill
Yes what?
Poor kitties 😢😢😢
Most love to live outdoors, have to remember we need cats outdoors, they keep mice away, just remember history, they took all cats away then the Black death came ,we need cats outdoors
You are so wrong. Cats do NOT do good outside, especially ones that have been in homes. They usually starve to death, or get eaten by wild animals ( coyotes, etc). Please do your research.
The Black Death thing is a myth that was made up in the later Victorian Era. Look at medieval art. They adored cats.
@@KyneburgheHannahYou need to learn a lot about Medieval history…..
And sadly, part of that history is that cats were both adored and hated by various human groups.
@KyneburgheHannah it's history
@@KPHeg if a cat has kittens then mother cat hasn't been thru the TNR program.
I wonder what Hannah Shaw aka “Kitten Lady” will say about this? She is a big advocate for community cats, and TNR.
Agree! Fighting the same issue my local “shelter”. They get over 500,000 each year in donations. Grifters!!!!
I agree. Abandoning them to find food shelter and water is insane.
Yep my now cat was deemed feral and she followed our daughter home one night and has been with us ever since. I agree with this ruling.
This is still a step forward, so focus on this positive. Life isn’t always fair, but people like this attorney, like bad owners will always be around-be thankful for the former.
Please keep them safe
Thank you, Judge, for speaking up for cats. However, at the same time, feral cats that are friendly should be labeled as "Friendly but possibly Feral" as I got a cat like that here in Washington and it was not domesticated and tore up my apartment and fought the newborn cats.
But God knows better it’s not Over !
It's about empathy and compassion for all.
The Humane Society in Pa boost always always post cats that are missing that have homes. Thank the Lord for them.
It is very sad what all the states are doing.
The problem with this is these cats are too expensive $200 is ridiculous if you selling for it 25 to $50 you'll probably get them adopted out quick ly
Is it mandatory for domestic cats to also have a collar?
I love how the humane society gave more rights to homeless cats then to homeless people
If it's going to make it harder for the shelter to spay/neuter strays then release them, I feel the shelter should decide if they can handle that.
A sad situation 😢
Very much agree with this
Ok, but you would need to double their budget.
What makes a judge qualified for this situation❓ We need knowledgeable about cats judges
One day we will all stand before God and answer for our deeds here on Earth we will also have to answer how we treated his creatures.
''most humane way to save the lives of cats''
and how does that work with putting adoptables BACK out on the street?
makes no sense and is a blatant lie.
Trap neuter release program in place?
Good for you Judge! Domestic cats do not know how defend themselves from other cats or animals! I think the Humane society needs to go out of business! They suck!
To be honest I've seen more feral kids running around LOL.
Watch Furball Farm

They slaughter song birds
That's nature
Hawks do..too
@@Jen-bu7bb cats get substantial human assistance. They are not in a state of nature
Owners are definitely allowed in New Hampshire to let their cats go in and outdoors. But I agree that if they are not neutered and spayed, they absolutely should not be let out.
