Deck switching is a classic of mine. I sometimes do it for literally no reason just for fun. My play group is very casual, and I find it really funny to just suddenly be playing a Boros deck in game 2 when I was simic game 1.
This is the most useful and concise info on sealed i have seen. I'm going to be sad this weekend when it does me no good as I forget most of it as soon as the tournament starts. 🤞
"It is not so much about the average power of your cards, but about the power of your most powerful cards." 👀 Wow. That seems simple, but I've never thought of it like that. Thanks Paulo!
A long time ago someone said this about sealed (honestly don't remember who) and it has stuck with me since (not an exact quote, just the gist of what was said): Variance in your pool can be bad enough that you can't win, but as long as your pool is above the threshold of "pretty okay," you have a roughly equal shot of winning as someone who has an insanely good pool.
Hey Paulo! I think I owe you a big thank you! I watched this video before today's day two, and I sideboarded much harder than usual, and it paid off! Thanks again!
Paulo could you release a video talking about how you did in the Sealed arena open? I think people would be interested in hearing what deck you ended up making, your pool and how you did in the tournament.
I remember you back from Magic-League days ;-) never was a too professional player and haven't played in like 6-7 years until now thanks to Arena, but congrats on all the success and great videos, keep up the good work
Thank you for mentioning the transformational sideboarding thing, this is something I just don't get any of my friends to believe me it's worth it. Now I can say PVDDR told me to :D
I am so glad to hear a pro player say they enjoy this format. It has personally always been my favorite and people always hate on it due to the variance. I have a question: As a regular BO1 draft player, I don't know anything about BO3 sealed. The question is, can I add basic lands to my deck in sideboard? That is, to change my colors. Thanks!
I love draft, but sealed has always seemed out of reach just because I’ve never really taken the time to try it. Thanks for the great content as always!
In game one you're building a deck to beat the hypothetical field on average. In games 2 and 3 you're building a deck specifically to beat your opponent's deck. The odds of those two decks always being 99% the same are quite low. Consider what you must do to beat control Vs aggro. Another thing to do consider is how polarised your pool is. If you could build a list that's 75%+ against aggro then maybe you enter game 1 with a deck that gives up all it's anti-aggro stuff for a better game 1 against midrange and control knowing even if you lose game 1 against aggro you'll win games 2 & 3 after sideboarding.
Always fun making a whole new deck in game two if your power level is pretty spread out across all colors. Confusion when your control deck turned into an aggro deck that destroys them is always nice lol.
Fala Paulo, está no Brasil? Vi que em maio terá um novo Arena Open Selado. Você sabe como funciona a premiação... Tipo, estando aqui e ganhando um dos prêmios em dinheiro, quanto de fato sobra para gente?
Me and my friend played sealed kaldheim the other day. Opened a Koma, so I did all my deck around it... Even at 40 cards, I just drew it once! 😑 Needless to say I lost the "mini tournament" we held.
Pascal vieren has a great article on sealed deck fundamentals I would check that out if you're going to play the arena open. Or don't so the rest of us have a better chance.
How feasible is it to board into a completely new deck on Arena, considering the strict sideboarding timer and lack of a feature to submit a secondary deck?
I'm not good at math, but B01 is 7 matches where you can go 7-2, and Bo3 is 4 matches where you can go 4-0. But isn't Bo1 technically 7 games, while Bo3 is 8 games? Meaning you're less likely to loose to variance? Like, in Bo1 you have to win 7 games with only 2 losses, but in Bo3, you can win 6 games with no losses, or up to 8 games with 4 losses... right? Someone better at math please elaborate!
In best of 3 you can have one bad matchup and you're just done. In best of one you have to lose to 3 different people. So basically if an opponent has Koma and you're not black, its over.
@@SaltySparrow Well they must draw it in two games too. I know what you mean though. It can be frustrating to be at 3-0 with a great deck and then get something insane as an opponent and miss out the day2 qualification then. Although at least that result pays enough for a new buy-in.
@@fanf9234 Yeah. Back when Traditional draft was up to 5 match wins or two match losses, I remember going 5-1 with each match win being 2-1 and the one loss was 0-2. I got the best prize with a game record of 10-7, which is pretty funny.

If you happen to have a pool that can be synergistic enough - and you can be there with only commons/uncommons in some archetypes, e.g. RW equipment - wouldn't you go for it?
Sealed is all about you open so there aren't any hard rules, just general guidelines. Some pools have the cards to be synergistic so you should go for it, but the general rule is that they won't, for the most part. But you can only see that by looking at each individual sealed and then deciding
@@PVDDRMTG thanks for replying! with the help of 26,000+ input data points collected from other players, I've put together a long list of all the micro-synergies at common and uncommon, and found so many clusters of synergy. see the summary on the website: sites.google.com/view/mtgmicro-synergyevaluator/findings/khm-findings-best-pairings-without-rmr and the list for those not afraid of large spreadsheets: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VKKBsm0zOC2RUL7TSGD3hIorLRUQu5rO2csZUVVEcNc/edit?usp=sharing hence my feeling that your KHM pool - specifically for this weekend - can draw on these common / uncommon synergies.
Surprised on your comment on vast superiority of raw power vs consistency. Are you saying for example that if I have 3 powerful bombs but all of different colors, I'm better off having a less consistent 3-color deck with 3 strong cards rather than a consistent 2-color deck but with 2 bombs?
agreed, having bombs is great, but a curve and a minimum of a strategy is better. You'll lose to opponents who have all 3, and there may be more than 2 out of your 9 matches
It's always a trade-of that you be aware of. For example, if your deck with 2 strong cards is already very good and your fixing is poor, then you likely don't need to play a 3rd color. Power 8, Consistency 8 is better than Power 9, Consistency 3 for example. But if your deck is solid but without the strong cards, you're better off splashing for the strong card. Basically if the choice is Power 8, Consistency 5 or Power 5, Consistency 8, choose power 8.
Ok I understand. Love the tips and great channel! Looking forward to your tips for Draft since I draft more than Sealed in MTG Arena due to high price of Sealed.
