- A Ride on HSR GM Artic (TA60-102N) 518206 on route 51 University. I rode it on a complete round trip from Hamilton GO Centre, through McMaster to the loop, then back, on the morning of January 26, 2007.
The bus was retired in April 2007, replaced by New Flyer DE60LFRs.
Note that this is the ONLY GM Artic video on RUclips.
Oh, the memories growing up riding on these high floor buses.
I only remember riding on one of these old articulated units 2 times... One was your run-of-the mill out & about during the day with my parents.
The other one was when my father took me and my brother to Mississauga to visit our cousins and brought us back on 1 of these buses from downtown Hamilton. We lived on Rymal.
There certainly was something special about riding on a high floor bus from the 80s.
I understand why most modern bus fleets are low for handy-accessible designs naturally, so for letting handicap people get from point A-B, and I have no problem with that, but I do miss the old high-floor stair buses.
Glad that this brought back memories. Whenever I watch this I remember how exciting it was to seek out these buses.
I think Novabus should bring back the Fishbowl (modernised though). Low Floor Buses aren't always the best option.
Agreed. I love those old high floor buses.
ah I liked the Orion IIIs too, I remember when 8222 was in service with OC a couple years ago. Good Ol' GM artics!
Within the last two weeks the last two remaining in service with HSR were retired, that's the one in the video and 518203.
One GM Artic is preserved in California, that is ex-Mississauga Transit 5034, which started life as OC Transpo 8209.
8202 is still at OC Transpo as 8222, not scrapped yet.
It was remarkably cold in the section behind the bellows when I rode it, as it was an early January morning. I woke up before 6 to get to Hamilton for that!
I don't believe any of the GM Artics got engines from the 1982 Gumman Flxible unless that bus had the DD 8V71N engine, But I was under the impression that 8251 (The Grumman) had the 6V92TA engine so more than likely, that engine was saved for one of the MCI Classics. The GM Artic in this video has the DD 8V71N engine.
518203's 8V-71 engine, before the bus was retired, was taken out of 8251 -- which was a 1982 Grumman Flxible 870 originally built for Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), as 8165. The 8100s were the last Grummans built for COTA with 8V-71 engines.
Would've been so Cool if Chicago CTA and New York NYC MTA had these.
i miss these buses i loved them
Nice Video Nigga! OC Transpo has preserved #8222 as historic bus fleet in the Fleet Heritage which was an ex Hamilton Street Railway's #8202. Also it was painted in the maple leaf paint scheme just like the 1999 Orion VI 06.501 Low Floor buses #4001-4140 in the fleet OC Transpo.
You need to remember that the Orion III's had severe structural rusting issues which resulted in their early retirement. The same thing killed TTC's 1987 NFI D40's as well.
And in 2010 all of Regina Transit's 1992 MCI Classics
8v71N = perfect for 60-footers and Cruiser buses.
Overkill for smaller buses like the 40-foot Fishbowls and Flxible/Grumman 870s.
But I tell ya, when NYBS had those Fishbowls with those 8v71s, we tore up that fucking Bruckner Expressway!!! Them shits got you scared to death cuz they were FAST!
Ah, thanks. Merry Christmas!
They made Fishbowls until 1986 for Canada, and like I said, the GM Classics were produced until 1987, when the model was sold to MCI.
Is this rare beauty still in service?
How many altogether did HSR have, and Missisauga Transit.
TTC Should of bought GM Articulateds instead of Crappy Orion III's that rusted up
I took plenty of pictures of it, I will link to them when they are online. Don't go to Hamilton expecting to find it, because it has been replaced by DE60LFRs.
It is great one was preserved.
Oh, Say Word! What's this BUS?
Perserved by OC Transpo? That's a nice way to put it considering they just have it sitting there rusting away.
Big opportunity was missed that could of been had with these buses, lots more could of been made, and in other years. TTC should of bought 100 of these buses in 1982 to run on 29 dufferin bus route, and others along with the 11 they already had. 100 more in 1983 to run on 7 Bathhurst, and , Eglington west, and East, Young and Bloor blue night bus service. With those TTC could of ran less buses, and less budget troubles. Artics did not run alot there till Orions wher bought I think in 1986.
DD 8V71, eh!
No, Gm continued making the Classic until it was sold to MCI in 1987.
Oops, my mistake, 5034 started life as OC 8208.
I think if this 8v71 version could be repowered with 6v92 or Series 50?
I like the title; "A Ride on ....... ". Think it should be called "A Sit on ... " hahaha. Thats the thing about city traffic, it never moves LMAO
@jackiechan511 Totally agree. They made one hell of a product.
so is the only remaining intact GM Artic at OC Transpo's Garage ? 8222
Well, the powertrain means very little if the actual buses are crap. I think they look awesome, but the TTC and OC Transpo had to rebuild theirs a bunch of times and got rid of them prematurely, when compared to Fishies from the same era.
ttcsubwayfan why had the octranspo or ttc never thought about building buses in ottawa or toronto that can better suit the tough snowing icy and salty winters in eastern ontario?
@@captianjessie1 They did. It was called Ontario Bus Industries. The Urban Transportation Development Corporation handled rail.
In Toronto, around 2000, some of the routes which were in high demand with lots of 40' buses working them led to TTC rebuilding some of their retired Orion IIIs, giving them a few more years of revenue service before they retired them for good in 2003.
They should of been marketed to US systems. Systems in the US like New York City Transit, Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority could of been more cost efficient with them. NFTA could of used them on the 55 PIne bus route, 58 to Niagara County Community Colledge, could of ran on route 50 which was very busy. Money could of been saved by running 2 less buses every hour during rush hour. New York City transit which has artics now could of had bought these in 1982, 83 and up.
gmcbuses Houston too
It was in the late 90s.
Wow these don't have seats in the middle.
I hated riding that particular bus..it was so damn hot in the back..and LOUD..lol
@ClassicTVMan81 - Yup. that's what I was getting at.
I would of prefer the GM's because it had the Allison V735 I prefer it over the ZF HP500
@STMclassic there are 3 left regional transit has 1 the trolley musemn have one as well and im not sure bout the other one
OC Transpo has one, Seashore has one. RTA's has been scrapped.
Low floors suck. Also too bad RTS was never articulated.
The GM Articulateds were also garbage, so I'm told.
Jackknifing in the middle was one of the issues of the TA60-102N.
