Since he doesn't mention them, the doors are there as a response to the tunnels being flooded during hurricane sandy. They are meant as flood gates that can handle storm surges four feet higher than sandys for when the next superstorm hits.
The superstorm event is extremely rare for NYC. The doors could also serve to convert the tunnels into a temporary emergency shelter. They look beefy enough to do that.
For those of you wondering about the giant doors, the city installed those on the tunnel's entrance after hurricane Sandy in order to keep it from flooding during the next hurricane. They have yet to be tested under actual hurricane conditions.
Wow that was amazing info about the doors that you put in the title. Everything I ever wanted to know about the DOORS of the Queens Midtown Tunnel. Seriously, you might want to change the title.
You are right. He forgot to explain the doors. The doors were installed on the tunnel after hurricane Sandy to prevent the tunnel from flooding when the next hurricane hits the city.
What about the doors? Or was that just clickbait? I drive through this tunnel about once a month and have always wondered about them. I thought I’d get an answer here.
Another comment said they were installed following Sandy. They can prevent storm surges that can be up to 4 feet higher than Sandy's were. But no, I'm 99% sure there was a disconnect between whoever records, whoever edits and whoever uploads.

It is a shame that connectivity between the midtown tunnel and lincoln tunnel was not done. Aside from the cross-bronx expressway to the GWB, all other Queens / Brooklyn routes to NJ involve crossing on city streets.
Ummm sooo what about those doors lol .. great job as always. Just always wanted to know about the doors …. I assume it’s something that prevents the east river from making its home on Manhattan
Much like the tunnels in Norfolk/Portsmouth Virginia where one completely filled up due to a malfunction with the storms doors which didn't drop when asked politely by some pixies I'm pretty sure that's what someone forgot his video was supposed to be about. You could say his train of thought left through the nearest available open door. The storm was hurricane Isabel and it definitely sucked.
"As a tribute, it bears the name of its first chief engineer, Clifford M. Holland, who with his team surmounted many previously unsolved tunnel engineering problems."
Its $6.55 with NYS issued EZPass readers. I have an NJ EZPass reader and I get charged the full $10.17 to cross the tunnel (and bridges run by the MTA).
I have a North Carolina EZPass and was wondering about that. So... I hope we charge people with New York issued EZPasses the full charge when they drive on our toll roads... and we seem to have a LOT of New Yorkers around here.
$6.55 is dang cheap when it comes to taking a car into midtown manhattan. not sure what makes this "astronomical" compared to transit far or anything else within NYC
Are they still charging the toll in both directions? That would be outrageous to pay $20 for a round trip plus the Hudson River crossing toll. When they had the tollbooths, they charged both ways. It is not clear, but then again this guy never explained the doors so clarity and completeness are not his strong points.
Reading the comments ive noticed then video has nothing to do with the title so as such i will downvote this. Now youtube has hidden dislikes for reasons but know this this video has more dislikes then likes.
Not a fan of clickbait bullshit. Was hoping to learn about the doors on the tunnels, ya know, like how they're made, the purpose, how they work, and maybe showcasing examples of similar structures in other places. But the best you did was earn a thumbs down from me and I'll be blocking this channel from my reccomendations as anyone else who feels fooled should. That ain't cool dude.

Nice of the video to let us know that
Yeah, these vids have been slipping lately, don't think the dude's 1st language us English, and they need to do more QC with their scripts and info
Thanks for the fill-in information!!!
Thank you for the information

It'll probably be another 100 years for it to happen as it's extremely rare. Least it's there now.

I'm starting to think he does it on purpose to generate more comments
Wait. What about the doors? How do they prevent disaster?
Click Bait...

@@rickmunro5332 Thank you I will.
Would love to see a video about the East River railroad and subway tunnels. They are heavily utilized and very much taken for granted.
Even with all these bridges and tunnels, the congestion makes it feel as NYC needs more of them!

I watched this whole damn video for the info about the doors you didn’t mention
still love the way you say "nineteen" "noynteen"
Amazing video as always! The It’s History title card intro music came in particularly hot today.

As a native Ny'er I Absolutely love your channel Ryan. Great archival footage.
I still take the 59th Street Bridge to avoid the toll of the tunnel.
Your a true patriot
I live right down the block from this tunnel.
I have never been to New York but feel like I have seen this Tunnel a million times from GTA Games and Television :)
I used to use that tunnel.
...used'ta take the tunnel in the 70s to get to one of my favorite hobby shops...the Squadron Shop in Syosset, LI
Ummm sooo what about those doors lol .. great job as always. Just always wanted to know about the doors …. I assume it’s something that prevents the east river from making its home on Manhattan
That's exactly what they're for lol
It's to prevent flooding from hurricanes, not the river itself.
What about the doors???
Anybody remember Horn Construction Company?
i can watch this channels vids all day
We could really use that actual midtown tunnel to drive from Queens to NJ without having to get out struggle through traffic between tunnels.
So...the doors?

i have been thorough this tunnel hundreds and hundreds of times since i first got my drivers license in 1992
So there are doors?
I was like "Hello where are the doors."
I'm guessing at @8:00 is one of the doors?
Who knew the manhattan tunnel fan would have been exhausted when worn out
Lots of pictures of the doors but zero comments about them. ?!?
Yes people, putting on some Jim Morrison & Co will prevent you from experiencing a party disaster no matter where you are 🎸
Hey Ryan, so what about the doors? Other persons on the commentary section have explained about them, but not you.
Interesting video
We need to focus on the cost of crossing it !
I worked as a Site Engineer on the 1998-2002 rehab of the QMT.

I worked for the company providing the actuation systems for the damper doors during the ventilation rehab.

About a month or so ago, a construction company drilled to far and caused water to enter the tunnel
There is a tunnel from Manhatton to Brooklyn too.
I can remember when the Queens Midtown Tunnel used to be free. It should be the same today! One more reason to move out of New York!
I use it 5 days a week
Thank you commenters for answering the question
5-6$ for one drive throu?! Wow imagine needing to Go throu that tunnel every day...
15:04 - It isn't New York 495, it's Interstate 495.
Looks like Its history left the door open since the doors were forgotten about
Robert Moses was a blight on this earth for what he did to US cities

So? What about those doors ?
You can deduct the cost of tolls on your taxes its not a biggie

Why are we asking about doors?
Because they made good music. 👍

If air was changed every hour, you’d have a lot of dead people. Air is changed approx every 90 seconds. Vent fans run constantly.
