Tiny town here, I used to work at a police station (I ran maintenance) and we had dudes from the prison come down and help me with projects (replacing floors etc) They weren’t super happy about helping cops, but they were cool with me…ok, I’m an old lady AND I made sure they had access to smokes, a lighter and snacks. Our highway dept was using them too, and they had to work in my yard…I went right out, handed out smokes and brownies. The dudes were super polite and I got nothing bad to say about any of them. Sorry, got a little rambling there.
Treat us like what we are. Human. My county had a lady who worked the kitchen and ran the same type of time for us. You ain't getting nothing special. Don't ask. But if you do what you're supposed to and don't make shit hard for her. Your life is exponentially better for you. But we also wouldn't let anything happen to her should someone come in on fucked up time or with an attitude thinking they are someone special. But in my county jail c.o.s are cops. You gotta work 2 yrs B4 going in a car But the people who support the jail are just county employees not cops
My wife is a nurse at a corrections facility. Some guys are nice and some are rude. She tells them that she isn’t a CO but if they don’t act right she will get them put on a self harm watch.
I worked on a criminal psych unit. That is a minimum of 72 hours of striped down and 24/7 someone watching your every move. It's an additional suck for the psych techs that have to watch them.

I had an inmate who would yell chicken effer on the yard nonstop so he could get a CO’s attention so him and his homies could get a laugh. I marched up to him one day and said I know you miss your mom but you can’t keep yelling for her. He got pissed but the homies were laughing their ass off. I said go ahead and file a grievance but you’ll look like a b!tch in front of your boys
Cause you gotta come back the next day and tolerate it for a long period of your life while getting paid shit. Gonna take one hell of a partner/family to motivate you through it
Well to be fair most of the people that went to jail/prison could have been home. They made that choice to do something against the law badly enough to send them there. Therefore like the CO made the choice to work there, the Prisoner, made the choice to also be there.

This is how I used to play head games with the Screw Is what we call them in Ireland. If it was a certain officer that nobody likes from the minute we see him in the morning till he leaves us at night I would Be at my door for lockup click my fingers and tell him to do what I tell him as in lock that door keep it locked for the night I don't want to be disturbed good slave. And in morning time same attitude every time he's at my door it's not locking me in it's locking him out and he's doing what I'm telling him it was lovely change in colour in his face every time..haha
C.Os are the ones who couldn't make the cut off to be an actual cop. Even though becoming a cop is very easy. The prison guards I've been around are annoying and obnoxious and corny as hell.
When I was a CO, one inmate told me that they call us cops because for them, we are the police. Makes sense; unless we go on a court run, we’re really the only uniform they see. I did that job for 4.5 years working both inside and outside and I cannot explain how many power tripping people I encountered. Yelling for no reason, purposely antagonizing, all kinds of things. Personally I rarely had issues with anybody after they knew my limits.

I mean you already passed your heavy background check multiple times over. A CO will get picked up for a police position over a normal 90% of the time.
@ well I was a cop and a chief of police and that’s not the way it goes around this area. Most CO won’t even get a second look for a PD position around here. Usually it is the retired cops that get picked up for a county co position of the counties have a jail. ( we operate on a regional jail system) sometimes if a county has the money they will have a holding facility and transport to regional once every 8 hours. But most of us won’t hire a co because they usually have the wrong set of skills and bad habits that we have to break and then retrain. It’s more of a hassle than what it was worth. Most of our sheriffs won’t even move someone from the detention side to the patrol side for the same reason.
When you tell new stories in the news, I watch no problem. When it's stories about prison, I skip bc it literally gives me flashbacks or anxious thoughts, which I steer clear of these days. Love ya man, but these stories hype me the wrong way
Police have a badge, security is always at risk. We are our calling all cars and we have respect from both sides of the line. Theirs is hired, ours is earned.

When i was in the Bad Girls high security , 20 years and up ,the C.O.'s were unfazed by anything the convicts said, when i wa transferred to an all security levels prison , the C.O.s, a lot of them anyways, got butthurt , bully mode when the inmates even looked at em. They seemed scared , trying to cover that by being unhinged like the one you describe but worse.
I feel that if you're a CO and a convict calls you a cop, your best bet would be to look back and be like well. Obviously you can't identify a police officer or you wouldn't be here

When i was a CO, i didn't really have a problem with being called a cop l. Some of my coworkers would lose their fucking minds though. It was insane to see. One of my sergeants threw a tantrum and started jumping up and down like a toddler. How he got promoted to sergeant, i will never know.

COs don't like cops? Fifty fifty on that, but one of the main reasons they don't like being called cops, is cops couldn't or wouldn't do what COs do. I also realized that the same is true in reverse. I don't really feel like typing for two hours, so I leave it at that. But if you got pulled over by a cop trying to get work on time and get called Cop. And leave earlier isn't really an option when working a twelve hour shift.

Correctional officers are far below cops. At least in Colorado. Their pay grade, education, and team camaraderie prove it. Police Here need a college education. If prisons are desperate enough here a GED will do.

Being a correction officer ranks right up there with Al Bundy selling shoes to fat women at the mall for crap jobs. Spending your whole day surrounded by convicted felons is not exactly the greatest company to keep. I would say it is still better than being a police officer. At least in prison, both teams have a uniform, so you know who to watch out for. More cops die every year in the line of duty than correctional officers, so it is also safer. Most COs just want to do their eight hours and go home, just like any person at any job. But prison is the home for those locked up and they have 24 hours a day to figure out how to cause problems and create issue and a CO only has eight hours to try and figure it out. Glad I left the profession.
The CO's on Leavenworth, KS are military & are a whole other level, they act like convicts too but with a power trip.

There doesn't seem to be this problem in New Jersey. Where the correction officers get called cops or CO'S. It doesn't seem to bother them.
