Yume Nikki Piano Arrangement: "Lucid Suite"

Due to a rise in popularity, I decided that I'd talk a little more about this piece.
Originally I got the idea to make a Yume Nikki arrangement so I could enter a video-game-themed song contest (which I won :D). I've noticed that most Yume Nikki remixes aren't very fitting for the game and weren't doing it justice (see 24 Effects). Regardless if the remixes were good or not, electronic beats and catchy tunes don't really feel very Yume Nikki-ish. I wanted to capture the feelings and emotions that I, and many others, have for this game.
The song is in three movements: Alone (0:00 - 6:30), Nightmare (6:31 - 8:25), and Epitaph (8:26 - 12:34).
The song starts with the iconic title theme, loaded with dissonance and awful chords to put you on edge. What you were about to experience was shrouded in mystery, but you knew that it would not be a happy experience. As you take your first steps in Madotsuki's dream world, you find that you are very much alone. Even if you come across someone, they just ignore you. You're lost in a world completely unknown to you, and the longer you're in the greater the sense of dread you feel. You eventually meet Poniko, and having finally met someone like you you start to feel a bit more at ease.
In the song, the slow tempos and solemn melodies help create this sad and lonely feel while still being shrouded in mystery. Poniko's section is a lot more ominous than in the game, but I also included a music box ballad section to still keep that playful childish feel that's in the game.
Suddenly, the world around you begins to fall apart. The dream world shows its true face, and you find a world full of horrifying creatures. You try to fight back, but your efforts are futile. They keep coming back, and they can't be stopped. And then, just when it couldn't possibly get any worse, you discover that Poniko is actually Uboa, the strongest and deadliest of all the monsters. The dream breaks down, and you are frightened back into the real world.
In the song, the key spam represents the chaos of the nightmare. The powerful chords and changing time signature portrays the struggle of a battle. I'd like to note that I've never seen nor heard of a musician who legitimately used key spam in their songs.
The next part is slightly reflective of my interpretation of the game, but not completely. I tried to make it as applicable to other interpretations as I could. Spoilers are present.
The sights Madotsuki saw in her dream proved to be too much for her, and she jumped. Madotsuki wanted to end it all, but in the afterlife a memory of Masada surfaces. Through all of Madotsuki's dreams, Masada was the only person who could comfort her. He meant a lot to her, and it is through this memory that she realizes just how much her dreams meant to her. So then, in the afterlife, she decides to forever be with her dreams.
I always found the save screen theme to be the most comforting and powerful out of all the songs in the game, so I used it for the entire third part. It starts out slow and simple, as Madotsuki remembers Masada and the comfort he provided. The sudden revelation between Madotsuki and her dreams turns into a very sudden, dramatic build up, as images of her dream began to fill her mind. Finally, the song turns into dramatic fanfare and drums (marching band style) as Madotsuki is reunited with her dreams. The song ends the same as it began, but this time instead of mystery and dread, you feel comfort and solace. Madotsuki will be forever happy.
I can't even describe how much Yume Nikki means to me. I've come to know Madotsuki and her friends more than any other character in a game, and I feel like I could call them my friends. Such a dark game that revolves around disturbing imagery and themes and suicide ironically got me out of a depression. I can relate to Madotsuki so well, even though there's absolutely no story in the game. Yume Nikki will forever be my favorite game, and the memory of Madotsuki will forever live on through me.
I do plan on making a high quality recording of this song soon. It will be much better than this one, as I rushed this one to get it in the contest on time. Now I've cleaned it up and even added some new things, even a new theme from the game. You can definitely look forward to that!
Songs included in this arrangement (in the order they appear):
Title screen
The end
One of the FC world themes
Flute room
Poniko's house (light)
Tile room
Save screen
(SPOILER ALERT)
A little while back, I got my boyfriend to also play this game. Since we didn't have much to really do that day, he managed to finish the game up. At the end, when Mado is outside on the balcony and sitting down, clearly thinking about jumping, he didn't think that would actually happen and jokingly said "Don't do it! You have so much to live for!". His reaction when she actually jumped was priceless. I would PAY to see that again. XD
cute :(
"Lucid Suite" is a anagram of "Suicide Lut" ("Lut" means "Sound" in English.) O_O
Lut from what language?
lut also stands for look up table, essentially an image transformation..
My favorite free game ever.
God, 10 years later and I still adore this song.
It has been like 2 and a half years and I still get to tears at Epitaph.
been another 2 how are you feeling now?
While the HQ version sounds much better in terms of clarity, I still love this version as the quality of the recording and the...sound(?) of the piano itself adds alot of emotion.
The arrangement here is much better and well done actually it's weird to me people don't notice it
One of my favorite piano pieces of all time, its been that way simce i was 13. Thank you for this.
I think my favorite part about this is how the piano sounds as it's an old abandoned piano that's been waiting for someone to play it for years.
Absolutely wonderful. I agree with your viewpoint on most remixes, they don't retain the original mood of the game at all. This is a wonderful piece you've written/arranged (arrangement is essentially just composing off a given melody, especially with yumeniks). It has a wonderfully heavy, melancholic mood throughout the suite. Love it
This is just too good. I've found the sheet music when I'm trying to find a yume nikki piano arrangement here in YT. That really caught my attention since the arrangement wasn't too "literal". It really caught the vibes of this game. And then it leadme here ^_^
emotionally and tragically beautiful. well done.
Pasados ya 6 años de escuchar esto por primera vez y me siegue encantando como la primera vez
This arrangement popped into my brain a few seconds ago, remember listening to this in mid 2012. Crazy how time flies by. Thank you again for this, it's quite beautiful. Happy to be here
Thank you to all the people I met and came across with this game in 2004. We all have solidarity in one another. I hope you are all well today. Remember what the game taught you
What I hate is how everyone sees the game as stupid without knowing the story, this arrangement definitely helps explain the passion in Yumi Nikki...... I love it.... great job.(:
what other video game has someone that combines all the music into one piano piece? this person should be so proud. its beautiful
Don't know why but the last 20 seconds of the song along with the picture just feel...so....accepting....
Hey. People are still loving this music. Thank you. Thank you for making this. It’s one of my favorite songs. Hah, I’m geeking out writing this as if you’ll actually read it. I love this. As someone who’s really into music, this is truly one of my favorite things I’ve ever heard. So deep and dreary, so lamenting and magical door opens in the middle of the night, shadows standing behind it, beckoning, beckoning with their hands. I fall into the door. This song is toppling through blackness.
You’ve added beauty into the world. There are not a lot of people who have done what you’ve done and you are very special.
I didn't even play that game, but this song arrangement makes me cry anyway. Just beautiful.
AllvF you should play it.
Since I started playing this game .. I started to hear this .. And always, every day, at least once, I hear, I remember the history of this game .. And I feel as if narrating the history of the game .. Do not know why, but it really fascinates me .. Because somehow, I also remember times in my life.
The feeling it gives you to hear it .. You can really feel the feeling you trying to convey, sadness, madness, despair, happiness ..
Congratulations, and ..
Thank you.
notice how every Yume Nikki video has about 20,000 views. This shows that those who understand the story and the emotion behind the game are obsessed with it.
Very very thank you for the piece, it's meanful to me.
during the whole thing I felt my heart race, and dozens of emotions hitting me. You have successfully put together an arrangement that makes the listener feel the emotions that you're playing. Well done, well done!
I really love this, thanks for sharing. :)
Its so interesting to see popular youtubers in places like this, where there’s no comments. Barely found, it’s like finding history about their long lost interests.
I keep listening to this for a whole year haha
awesome work.
I just suddenly understood the game better. This truly is a masterpiece.
I started crying at 8:29. ;-;
Almost six years since I'd first heard it, 20th June 2015, and it's still my personal #1 musical piece of all time.
i actually love the end bit with the piano version of the title screen. prettyy
This is absolutely beautiful. I believe you've captured perfectly the emotion of the game: the images of her dreams giving a glimpse of the struggles Madotsuki had to face within herself. No game, whether with a full-fledged storyline and cast of characters or not, ever left the mark on me that this one did. And this arrangement fully reflects that same feeling. Fantastic job.
I can't believe it's been over a year since I posted this. Thank you all for your support and positive comments. It's good to know that there are many people who care just as much about the game as I do.
You'll all be happy to know that I believe I have finally found a means of making a high quality recording. If things go well, you'll be getting the new recording in a week or two!
Again, thank you all for your support!
I love this game so much. It really deserves more love. The way the dreams and the designs of everything are, they're so unique and incredible to look at.
You see, I'm a sucker for anything that's unique, and this game has it all in my opinion. That and there's a lot to explore. I really hope that I can play this game one day.
Plus, this piano arrangement is very well done and suits the game perfectly. I love it so much. ;w;
The HQ recording was just posted, go check it out!
I think I prefer the lower quality version...the background static gives it an old-timey radio feel which complements the mood. Amazing piece!
Oh. Wow. I just break in to tears every time I hear this. You've captured the feelings from the game so perfectly. It brings back thoughts and memories from the game. And the fact that the song tells a story in itself is breathtaking. I can't wait for a high quality version of this, so I can have it on me always.
Volt doesn't read most of the comments, so I'll reply to this for him. He's a huge X-Japan fan; probably where he got the inspiration from for that. I haven't heard that song though, so I'll be sure to give it a listen. Thanks for loving Lucid Suite, means a lot to him =D
This is a work of art and I'm so glad as you went the route to capture the atmosphere of the game and not simply make a tune that sounds good.
This song makes me feel so many emotions.. right now it's just loneliness; longing for friends like madotsuki had..
I wanted to cry at 8:30... really. I feel it on my heart.
I have to say, this makes my list of the top 3 most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I love how much emotion you put into it, and how much you portray the game. Hope I can become as good as you at playing piano one day :)
He said he'd do one for the next recording in a few weeks to me just there. GET PSYCHED!
This is absolutely amazing. You've captured my emocions too. This game means a lot to me and fot many others, and I know they love this. Great job. I really love it. I'm waiting for the high quality version!
Dir en grey's new single "Rinkaku" goes with this SO WELL. Not just just the song (both in same key and dark atmosphere, btw) but the subject matter.
Love this song. Your arrangement is simply beautiful; it truly captures Yume Nikki. I look forward to your future works! Keep up the great work!
ive beaten the game twice personally and this song did not make me cry.
casi lloro no puedo pensar que haya terminado asi :(

This is just plain musical brilliance. I do hope you record a high quality version sometime soon! I wanna save it into my iPod. This is definitely worth listening to.
You sir/ma'am...are amazing.
Holy crap this was unbelieveable.
I guess it is how we can relate to Madotsuki that makes yume nikki a truly wonderful game.
Truly amazing, thank you
I love it. Haven't played the game in forever, but this is beautiful.

My, that was fantastic. I must commend you for such a moving piece. I hope you will find your own dream world in the end.

At 9:33 it looks like Masada-sensei starts to play the piano. :3
That was amazing
this is so beautiful ;w;
You should make sheet music! I would even pay for it!
Who else feels that Miyazaki should make a movie adaptation of this? I think it could work.
If you know how the game ends, this song will make you cry.
Beautiful and patch-worked as Madotsuki and her dream world are...
I want to know the sources of the beautiful pictures too!
Oh my god... I love this. I love this so much. ;-;

2019?
2019!
banger
I really, really want to play this game... Due to some weird reasons, I can't, so please dont link me, but... damn...
I've only seen a bit of it, and it seems so surreal and ethereal... It just looks, relaxing, yet deeply disturbing...
It's a stretch, but if anyone could pull it off, it'd be him.
dat feel when madotsuki
awesome >:D
I think it's supposed to be Alice from, Alice Madness Returns. Notice the knife in her hand?
It's an intentional part of Yume Nikki that there is no story. It's all imagination and interpretation, no actual facts. Like a dream.
It makes sense, 'cause Madotsuki can kill things with a knife and so can Alice.
