Not only was The Cranberries song meaning not hidden or unknown, i really didn't like how they were making fun of Dolores' voice. Her voice is so haunting and sad, you can feel the emotion in the song.
That bothered me too, especially because she was doing something called Keening, which is a culturally significant form of traditional mourning in Ireland.
Just pure ignorance and they have no idea about the Troubles
They're Americunts, they don't have enough thought going on to realize such things
They really showed their intelligence or lack thereof.
The keening is always so haunting and I wish i could sing like that.
It's sad, that all the commentators were so insensitive and disrespectful to "Zombie".
Especially mocking the keening of Dolores, which is an Irish traditional style for funeral songs and mourning. My fingernails curled the other way watching this.
I know. That made me so mad!!! First off, making fun of the way she was singing was disrespectful enough, but to make fun of the song, too. Especially after they were told the meaning behind it. Seriously!!!
It's truly sad. Dolores had such a beautiful unique voice 🥹💜
Holy shit y’all are so sensitive. How the hell would anyone not Irish immediately know that?
@Jack_Ss well, I didn't know that, but it still bothered me that they were making fun of the song. Simply because of the fact that it is a serious song with real meaning
@@Jack_Ss I'm not Irish but when I heard the song for the first time as a 13 year old girl I knew it was an extremely sad song and that it held a lot of meaning. Its not about being Irish, its about using your ears and eyes. Its obviously about war, and the way she is singing sounds like crying. You don't need to be Irish to realise that. These people were trying to be entertaining but just came out as obnoxious.
Why are you upset that people are giving justifiable criticism? You sure you aren't too sensitive?
“Zombie” breaks my heart every time I hear it. It’s so much grief and pain in one song.
I don’t know how others knew about the song, but we discussed it and the background in school. I still get goosebumps every time I hear it. Can’t understand how you can make fun of the way Dolores sings it, I could just cry everytime I hear her zombie echo 😢
The style of singing that they are making fun of at the beginning of "Zombie" is called "keening" and is a way Irish women sing for funerals and when in mourning, which this song essentially is doing....mourning the death of two British children during 'the Troubles". I hope they all went home and googled the children so they could learn more about what facilitated their deaths.
💯
Yeah all of this was just really insensitive and sounds like a bunch of idiots talking. It's frightening to think that most people are this stupid
Most of them also laughed at the elderly couple found at the bottom of a ditch, so I think the problem goes beyond not having enough information.
I'm sorry Sharon, but the Goo Goo Dolls are not a one hit wonder.
I felt so insulted when she said that
Thank you! I did a double take at that.
A two hit wonder?
@@Wellch Google says 19 in the top ten. I can think of 4 off the top of my head.
Ikr.
I thought it was always very clear what Zombie was about.
They have to actually pay attention to the lyrics to get it. they hear Zombie and probably think it's about the undead
So sad he didn't know she was singing in english. (Zombie) laugh if you want, but she was iconic. So sad she passed away. I was so ready to hear more from her.
When the Beatles toured the United States, they refused to play in segregated venues. "Let everyone sit together or we walk."
I feel the same way. We all need to stick together. White black etc . We are what makes the world greater. Not trump
That we did until certain politicians decided we are collectively awful and non important aspects of people became primary.
What makes the song Zombie even sadder is Dolores of the Cranberries died the morning of the day she was supposed to record the song again with the band Bad Wolves
it was sad but bad wolves did a nice tribute cover and donated the proceeds to dolores' children
aww dolores..such a fabulous strong unique sound..pity
@@carolanndenton5933it's not true
Zombie is definitely a sort of jab at how far the P-IRA had gone by that point of the troubles, and being fed-up with how the conflict was effecting children, British and Irish alike. 'Its the same old theme, since 1916, in your head, in your head they're still fighting..." Referring to The 1916 Easter Rising that ultimately was the catalyst for the Irish War of Independence, the Irish Civil War, and eventually, spiralling into the Troubles in the North. There is a heck of a lot of history driven emotion packed into this song. A century of ongoing violence in different forms that spiralled out of control as the decades wore on.
Also, side note, the type of vocalization used by Dolores here is something called Keening, and is a traditional way of mourning/grieving in Ireland. It has a deep historical/cultural significance and history and I think it's the cherry on the top of this amazing and emotionally charged song.
Yes, and the way they mocked her was culturally insensitive. If they were mocked, we'd be canceled, what a load of shit.
I can't believe someone referred to a song by Goo Goo Dolls as a "One Hit Wonder." They had so many great hits.
Dewd, Delores passed away not too long ago. And she had a big heart. Whippersnappers need to show a little respect. Sincerely, Gen X.
Word
Agreed. Signed, a millennial.
From one Gen X-er to another, thank you. She was also wildly talented, and had one of the most haunting voices I've ever heard. Her voice still stays with me today. There will never be another like her.
Zombie by the Cranberries featured a Vocale Style called "Keening" Which Dolores O'riordan was adept at. It is litterally and absolutely a song about grief and loss.
Right! I hear people karoke this song and almost mockingly imitate her voice/style. its really sad tbh
I'm Asian too but I can understand Dolores O'Riordan pretty well. I don't appreciate tjose two guys mocking her. She sings beautifully.
Exactly
Keith Should SHUT THE F*CK UP AND DON'T MOCK THE LATE DOLORES O'REARDON.... R.I.P.
The song 'Zombie' always gets me so bad cos my wife would've gone into Warrington town centre that day if it hadn't been raining (she was 3 when it happened). She could so easily have ended up being one of the victims outside of where McDonalds is now.
I remember that day I had been shopping in Liverpool and around that time there had been a lot of bomb scares going on and I got home and heard the news it was so sad
How can people think Zombie does have anything but a dark meaning? It is right there in your face.
A lot of nursery rhymes are actually very very dark in their meaning and message.
"Zombie" doesn't have some hidden, dark, meaning. it's pretty obvious it's a song about war and hate. Not everyone knows about the Irish Revolution, unfortunately, but it's very easy to discern from the lyrics and her crying singing that it's very emotional song
It's an exceptionally emotional song and having spent time living in Northern Ireland in the early 90s, during the troubles, it resonates a lot. As a singer myself, I can rarely sing this song without choking up.
i had no idea the meaning but know it as ufc star korean Zombie's walk out song and got emotional when it played one last time after his last fight when he retired
@@bobbychase5616 there is nothing to be proud of. You just don't know the story behind one of the most influential song of 90's.
It doesn’t get more clear than these lyrics…
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are crying…
Another mother's breaking
Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken
It's the same old theme
Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head, they're still fighting
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dying
Honestly the song could be about any war really although when it says 1960 I'm pretty sure it's referring to what happened with nam.
The fact that the one girl called The Goo Goo Dolls emo, and then the other lady said they were a one hit wonder band just made my blood boil, me being a grunge geek 😂
Im born and raised in Ireland, do yout research on the cranberries, R.I.P Delores 🇮🇪🇮🇪
I loved the cranberries but it always pissed me off when she sang Zombie. How did the troubles effect her and why react so strongly after a bomb on mainland UK. There were shit loads for her to sing about that actually happened in Northern Ireland.
The Disrespect with the cranberries
That was hard to watch. Then, she didn't even give them the background of what was going on in Northern Ireland. 😥😠
Great song, great singer, important message in the song.
Ikr!
I lost respect for all of them when they started mocking Delores of Cranberries. I can admit growing up I was not a fan of hers but as I got older, I recognized her talent. She was beautiful and had an amazing vocal talent. She was taken too soon. As far as what zombie was about, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure it out if you pay attention to the lyrics. R.I.P Delores.
Thank you, that really got to me too, specially because I loved her music.
Haven't gotten there yet.... Already incredibly pissed!!!! PPl have NO respect!!!
It’s sad she did not say anything when the English were killing Irish people including children in Northern Ireland.
"Thanks" to all of the reactors for mocking the keening that Dolores was doing. Keening is a type of traditional Irish singing used to express sorrow for the death of people. The presenter should've hit all of them with that little bit of information so we could watch the reactors react to it after making fun of it.
I will accept no Delores O'Riordan slander.
Bad wolves made a cover on Zombie and switched out some words, bombs and guns to drones and 1916 to 2018, to make the song relevant to todays wars and Dolores was actually gonna sing with them. But she sadly passed before that could happen.
Zombie had evolved pretty quickly to be an anti-war song, played at various protests. If I recall, she directly helped and approved of the updated lyrics because she acknowledged and respected how the song had changed. The world really suffered a loss when she passed.
Ring around the Rosie is about the plague, and was actually in the US before it came to England. It was written about how horrible the plague was. There were more lyrics that were printed in a book in the 1850s, but have been lost with time. It wasn’t written during the plague, and back then Ashes to ashes didn’t mean cremation. It meant death. That’s why they would say it at funerals. Also, the GOO GOO DOLLS ARE NOT ONE HIT WONDERS!! They are a great band!
are you mansplaining? lol. kidding but while it's likely true, it hasn't ever been confirmed. But yep. ashes to ashes means from ashes we are born and to ashes we shall return; the cycle of life
How do they not know about 99 Red Balloons and Zombie. Growing up in the 90s, we were taught about the turmoil going on overseas. And those songs made it clear what they were about. The lullaby didn't ruin nothing for me, then again I grew up on german ones. Surprised Everlast 'What its like 'hasn't been touched on, the topics are heavy but an important message. Also, country songs, like Garth Brooks 'The Thunder Rolls'.
How come none of these people could make the connection between a song being about SIDS and telling a bed time story meant to keep the kid awake?
Because people refuse to talk about SIDS.
Cuz they stupid
Imagine calling the Goo Goo Dolls a one hit wonder 😂
Yep, that got me too.
The fact that dude made fun of the cranberries I automatically hate him
I'm Gen X and 99 Red Balloons is BEYOND ICONIC!
I can vividly remember hearing it at 1am on the radio and asked my Grandfather to translate it which led down a truly life changing moment.
Music comforts the disturbed, and disturbs the comfortable.
R.I.P. DOLORES O'REARDON OF THE CRANBERRIES... *Had The Pleasure Of Meeting The Whole Band Here In Toronto Canada Years Before She Passed Away She Was Pregnant At The Time So I Gave Her A Teddy Bear 4 Her Son*
It actually hurts me how much they made fun of Dolores because of the way she sang. It's like making fun of kurt cobain because of how bad he sings. When them singing perfect isn't the point of their music. It's to bring emotions and have you feel way they want you to feel.
I agree, that kind of pissed me off actually. It's how she sings
I don't know anyone who doesn't think her voice is absolutely perfect. No auto tuning needed like they have to use these days.
I think they sing great. What do you mean?
@@jfearless3420 because they were making fun of her...disrespectfully
@@brandonaustin5536 bercuda mentioned that he/she didnt think they sung great if you re-read her post. I was saying they did.
99 red baloons/99 luftbaloons is extremely dark. The English version is not a translation of the German version. The English is about baloons accidentally starting a nuclear war but the German version (translated as written) takes place 100 years AFTER a nuclear war - an even darker song. All of this is hidden by a 1980s synth pop melody.
Ok, Zombie is a great song, butt how can you include it in a list of songs with darker meaning, when every single word of the song is clear what it is about.
You mean like almost every song on this list...
Yea this video was pretty stupid IMO. And the “reactors” annoyed the hell out of me.
Wow the mocking of Dolores' voice was really cringe. It makes me upset. She was amazing and always managed to get the fans to feel what she was feeling.
I feel so old now. I know every word to all these song. I'm absolutely shocked that there are ppl who have never heard of Metallica!..whaaat!???
Same here 😅😘👋
MIA was such an influential figure. I don't love all of her songs, but you can't deny her style and how huge it was in a lot of the 2000s.
I weep for the idiocy and lack of empathy these people feel
Ok, so my heart dropped when they said GOO GOO DOLLS was a one-hit wonder... wth.,... LOL, and Metalica's Sandman, back when that came out, it was SOOOO popular, even hard-core rap listeners in my community knew that song (I am Black American)... but, everyone in the world doesn't know every song... (It's scary that I knew every song on this list tho...)
@6:59 “Come on Barbie let’s go party” was just perfect
RIP Dolores O'Riordian. 💜
I think Dolores was dressed as the Goddess Eiru in that video. Eiru is the Patron Goddess of Ireland in Celtic/Irish mythology. Eiru is also the Goddess of Peace. Ireland is named after Eiru.
Ériu in Old Irish, Éire or Erin in Modern Irish, Éire is also the name of Ireland in Gaelic.
7:44 - not a lot of people know?
Girl! In 2009, it was all anyone was talking about with Gaga. If it wasn’t how shocking this song was, it was all the rumors that she was an MTF trans woman.
"Choices have Consequences" The Dude was DRAFTED, he had NO Choice.
shes dumb, she cant help it....
16:23 the double irony of not recognizing the language and it actually being by an Irish band; on one hand he's right, it's not English cuz it's Irish, but on the other hand she's singing in English
As someone German, I vibed to 99 Luftballons since my childhood. The text is pretty clear. Basically humans felt threatened by these balloons and there ended up being 99 years of war. That’s basically what happens in the lyrics.
Ashes to ashes is a regular phrase used by Catholic priests during burial "ashes to ashes, dust to dust"
I don't even live in an English speaking country and I know that. The education system really let these folks down if they can't make this simple connection
@@CrisSelene for real right lol
I mostly know about it because I was raised a Christian. It refers to a verse in Genesis that says from dust you are made and to dust you shall return.
She said Goo Goo Dolls was emo 😂
Every kids nursery rhyme is dark
1918 Spanish Flu kids' song: We had a little bird, his name was Enza. We opened up the window and in flew Enza.
In the UK we don't say 'ashes to ashes'. We say 'atisshue atisshue'(as in sneezing)
Same as in Australia. I was wondering what she was talking about when she said “Ashes to ashes…” very confusing.
Did that thing just call the Goo Goo Dolls a one hit wonder?
Goo-goo Dolls were NOT "emo", nor were they "one hit wonders". SMDH
Um...FYI The Goo Goo Dolls had more than one hit.
For the Paper planes song I always assumed it was a dark song about street violence especially murder and robberies because of the gunshot and money noises.
Surprised Pumped Up Kicks wasn't in there.
They have done a react with similar title with that song in it before.
I'm doing a project on Zombie and have now learned so much about the IRA
"Zombie", much like "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" reflected on what happened because England decided it wanted to control Ireland.
"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" is part of the service that the Priest or Parson reads from the Bible, meaning that we all return back to that state after death, not cremation.
That's still got nowt to do with the rhythm. Its about the plague
8:42 Did she just call Goo Goo Dolls a one hit wonder? oof
ashes, ashes doesn't mean cremating bodies ,it just means dying. You know like at funeral when the minister says ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
We always sang it as ‘atishoo’ not ‘ashes’
The disrespect towards Dolores O'Riordian is hands down a fight-able offense. Kunck if you Buck 100%
I don't think anyone with a fully working brain could misunderstand what this song is about. But the way they casually joke around while discussing it annoyed me. Won't be watching any shit from this channel again.
@@burtbackattacksame
As someone that’s from Northern Ireland it’s good that a song as popular as zombie exists to help people learn about what our country has been through
90s were my teen years so I do remember hearing about what happened over there and it made me sad.
The Cranberries are Irish not English babes
They're talking about language, not nationality. He couldn't understand her words so he thought she wasn't singing in English. Host later mentioned them being Irish.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust was typically said during funerals in England. When laying someone in rest.
Still is.
8:42 Sharon, you of all people should know The Goo Goo Dolls are anything but a one hit wonder.
The English version of ring ‘o roses says achoo not ashes, so sneezing not cremation.
I think yall should do more "nursery rhymes". See see my playmate, red rover, London Bridges... there's soo many.... but only if u REALLY wanna ruin a childhood....
I want this 😂
Thumbs down for those two dissing Zombie.....
Goo goo dolls a one hit wonder lol
Ikr lmao
SHARON!!!! The Googoo Dolls weren't one hit wonders. They had quite a few hits. Don't make me be THAT person LOL.
Ima just drop "Iris" here and see if it rattles any memories
And “Black Balloon”!
Dude needs to have his ears looked at if he can't hear that Dolores O'riordan is singing in English.
i..... paper planes? how did anyone ever miss the meaning to that? she blatantly says in the song lyrics that she's making visas at the border for people, the lyrics in general are not shy. "it's a political statement?" yikes, the media literacy in this country is like a hairball down the drain - stuck right where you can't get it to come back up. it's really giving andre 3000 in hey ya! saying "y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance"
You could tell that they didn't really listen to the lyrics. I knew the lyrics, so I got it. I think that if the lyrics were clearer, then they would have gotten it.
who tf was listening to the lyrics of that song 😂
Another one might have been I Don’t Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats
I had a Bolivian baby sitter growing up and I asked her what the Macarena meant. I was about 7 at the time and she paused realllllly long before saying "Oh they're just talking about the things this girl named Macarena likes to do. Like her hobbies" 😂I know why she had to pause before answering now
In macarena the mentioned boyfriend is not only drafted to army, but is sent to the front as bullets fodder
Just like in Ukraine...
Should have included “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam the story behind that song is so chilling
One by Metallica is definitely darker than Enter Sandman.
But the phrase "from ashes to ashes and from dust to dust" was still said during the plague as part of a death ceremony as based on the Bible. This is said before the casket goes "down" into the ground.
Also, fun fact about "Poker Face" the second time in the chorus when Gaga sings "Po-po-poker face" she's not singing "poker face," she's singing "f-- her face." According to Gaga, only one radio station ever reached out to her to confirm the lyric before playing it.
Yeah so the guy who said it was about giving h*** was correct lol I noticed that too!
Paul McCarthy chose not to tell his wife she had terminal cancer. She only had weeks and he didn't want her to feel bad for dying❤
or be scared about it..sometimes it is better not to say..especially when they do not have much longer to live..better they be in more happier hopeful spirits..aww
Don’t mock the Cranberries singer Delores.
God rest Delores
This made me.realize.how.folks dont listen to lyrics at all and thats scary. No wonder we are were we are w music.
I don't know how some people can listen to a song in their native language and not pay attention to the lyrics. I listen to a lot of songs in other languages and still know the lyrics because I check out the translations. My favourite surprise lyric was on what I thought was a party song, until I read the translation of the chorus which was "woo, there is no tomorrow, there is already a mortgage on my future" and got slapped headlong into a doom spiral about the reality of my economic future.
How on earth do these people not know 99 Luftballons by Nena or Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls? Those songs are played everywhere in my area, even now. You always hear this stuff at the grocery store. Don't order your groceries for delivery, go to the store and learn these songs. Bust a move in aisle 5. Then again in aisle 10. Why? Because the grocery store needs some excitement and they have some decent back in the day tunes. Did you think it was all about food? Hell no!
Even my grandmother know about Metallica 😅
4:08 "And we just over here, teachin' the children this song..." Oh, trust me, that's FAR from the only nursery rhyme that's stupidly dark, when you learn what it's actually about. Case in point: Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater. ...about a pumpkin farmer whose wife was a serial cheater, so he got his revenge by chopping her up and baking her meat into a pumpkin, alongside herbs and veggies.
Now we would just need Stan by Eminem, that was daaaark!
The Fastball song... for years, I imagined little kids left behind. At least, in reality the kids were actually grown. I still kinda liked the song as people yearning to escape the humdrum of reality, only dreaming and not actually leaving their kids. Knowing that they were both elderly, is sad, but also makes me hope they had that autonomy to go out their own way, and weren't actually confused, scared, and lost at the very end. Some elderly couples do make a pact at the end, and in my opinion, after you lived a full life, raised your kids, retired and in bad health, why stay and suffer because society says so? If you lived your life for nearly a century, then I believe you have the wisdom to do what you think is best for yourself.
Gangnam Style has a hilarious memory for me. I showed my mom the video and she cracked up at a few points, but when Hyuna walks on the train my mother who was in her SIXTIES at the time said "God damn, that woman is beautiful."
"Songs with darker meanings than you think" .... Well, maybe they should stop thinking and actually listen to the lyrics?!
As a German I found it very interesting how they didn’t know or realize that 99 Luftballons is about the Cold War and the wall, because from the lyrics that was always so clear, eversince I was super young. And I didn’t even think about the fact, that someone who does not speak German might not find it as clear
While I enjoyed this, the reaction to the Cranberries really annoyed me.
So disrespectful.
Dolores had a wonderful voice and Zombie is such a powerful song.
Uh oh I haven’t made it that far yet. But I loved her voice. And you’re right she was extremely talented. I had the first 2 albums but the 2nd one I listened to a lot. 😊zombie was a badass tune too.
Thumbs down for them making fun of the cranberries.
You need to do one about children's shows with dark meanings
I agree
Thumb down for disrespecting Zombies
I remember an episode of Baby Loony Tunes where granny tells the kids that if they don’t go to sleep the sandman won’t come and daffy stays up all night, still gets the little eye crusties and is so confused that granny has to confess she lied about sandman.
15:52 he made himself look like a jackas* . You don't need to watch the video, still the meaning of the song is pretty obvious and it was haunting.
Zombie was also about the gun fighting war in Ireland.
