  • In a Collision Rule review, an out call by Marty Foster was overturned and as a result, Twins Manager Rocco Baldelli was ejected for arguing the replay overturn.
    From the MLBUM:
    64. CATCHER POSITIONING ON POTENTIAL PLAYS AT HOME PLATE
    Rule 6.01(i)(2) Comment:
    In determining situations with a potential play at home plate, it is important to observe the catcher’s positioning when he sets up to receive a throw. If a catcher sets up entirely in front of the plate (i.e., with his left foot on the fair side of the third base foul line), the catcher will not be found to have violated the Rule if he maintains that position without possession of the ball. Conversely, a catcher that sets up in foul territory or straddles/stands behind home plate (with his left foot on the line or in foul territory) while not in possession of the ball is at
    jeopardy for a violation to be called if it is determined that he hindered or impeded a sliding runner. A catcher without possession also may not set up with his left leg extending over the third base foul line, or otherwise lean his body over the foul
    line, in order to block the pathway of the runner.

    The ball was in the glove before the catcher's knee touched the ground, and before the runner contacted the catcher. By that definition the catcher did receive the ball correctly and did drop his knee correctly. Before is before, as with a play at first base it does matter how close it is. Only that the ball arrives in the glove before the runner touches the plate. For whatever reason, the ball arriving before the knee touched the field, and before the runner arrived wasn't enough.

    Rule 6.01 (i)(2) Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in the judgment of the umpire, the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the umpire shall call or signal the runner safe. Not withstanding the above, it shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 6.01(i)(2) if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in a legitimate attempt to field the throw (e.g., in reaction to the direction, trajectory or the hop of the incoming throw, or in reaction to a throw that originates from a pitcher or drawn-in infielder). In addition, a catcher without possession of the ball shall not be adjudged to violate this Rule 6.01(i)(2) if the runner could have avoided the collision with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) by sliding.
    Rule 6.01(i)(2) Comment: A catcher shall not be deemed to have violated Rule 6.01(i)(2) unless he has both blocked the plate without possession the ball (or when not in a legitimate attempt to field the throw), and also hindered or impeded the progress of the runner attempting to score. A catcher shall not be deemed to have hindered or impeded the progress of the runner if, in the judgment of the umpire, the runner would have been called out notwithstanding the catcher having blocked the plate. In addition, a catcher should use best efforts to avoid unnecessary and forcible contact while tagging a runner attempting to slide. Catchers who routinely make unnecessary and forcible contact with a runner attempting to slide (e.g., by initiating contact using a knee, shin guard, elbow or forearm) may be subject to discipline by the League President. All references to “the catcher” in this Rule 6.01(i) shall apply equally to other players covering home plate. In addition, Rule 6.01(i)(2) shall not apply to force plays at home plate.

AGAIN when you challenge the call you give away your right to complain to the umpires on the field because they didn't make the call NY made the call. This rule will be reviewed and possibly changed when runners start to cleat the catcher for blocking the plate, and once a catcher gets cleated a few times they will change the way they play the throw either set up in front of the plate or in back of the plate and give the runner a lane.

    Most rulesets make this call much more black-and-white (textbook obstruction). It seems MLB wants to make things confusing. What makes this even more frustrating is that the catcher caught the ball slightly in front of the plate in fair territory but had his left leg blocking the plate. I have a feeling that the last camera angle was what determined for the replay official that it was obstruction (4:53). As the runner neared the plate, the catcher moved into the runner's path. The runner was already sliding with no path to the plate when the catcher caught the ball. Like I said, in most rulesets this is textbook obstruction.

    Ok, I've had enough. Time to get rid of these BS rules & go back to the way it was...in ALL sports. By now, everyone should be informed as to the consequences of concussions. Make your own choice: A) Accept the risks involved so that you can continue to be an overpaid professional athlete, or B) Sit your happy ass at home.

    Yikes! I guess I would have to read this new rule, however, given where the ball landed I think the announcers have a point...where could have he caught the ball if not there?
    It looked like the runner might have been safe if not for the slight interference. However, it was very close. The throw was a bit too high. I think the call was correct.

    Announcer…”There’s nothing definitive about reviewing whether or not the catcher blocked home plate”……when the catcher very clearly blocked home plate. Why? Was the runner’s foot able to slide over the plate? NO, because it hit the catcher’s leg. That’s “blocking home plate.” Seems complicated, but actually Pretty simple. Stay in your lane bro…like the catcher in the runner’s…!

    • @quenwortley2194
      @quenwortley2194 2 года назад +1

      “Nothing definitive” it’s not a black or white issue, as he said. The catcher is allowed to set up wherever he can in order to make the catch, he then folds his leg in order to give the runner as much room as possible. But Sanchez makes the catch as Whitfield is sliding into him, meaning he’s not blocking the plate as long as he’s setting himself up to make the catch.

      @@quenwortley2194 Def not being confrontational bro…but, by rule (which is black and white) he is not allowed to set up wherever he wants to make the catch. He is supposed to stay on the inside of the runner’s lane, make the catch, and carry the tag into the runner. He cannot block the runner’s path to slide into the plate. The catcher clearly dropped his left leg into the runner’s path. That’s obstruction.

      @@Ryanrob444 where was he supposed to stand to catch the ball? If the catcher has the ball or is in the act of receiving it he can stand where ever he’d like.

    • @Ryanrob444
      @Ryanrob444 2 года назад +2

      @@kalebb8608 That’s just it…he cannot stand wherever he’d like. Very simply, by rule, he cannot block the runner’s path to slide into the base. If you watch the video in slow motion, you can see that the runner’s foot slid into the catcher’s leg. If his foot had not hit the catcher’s leg, the play would have been a lot closer, maybe safe. I know it seems logical that the catcher should be able to stand wherever he’d like to catch the ball, but the rules as they apply to obstruction are pretty simple. If you impede a runner’s path, it’s obstruction, period. If obstruction is called, it’s a delayed dead ball and the umpire’s job to nullify the act of obstruction after the play is over. In this case, the umpire did not signal obstruction right away (his mistake), so that’s why it went to replay. You can see the runner telling the umpire right away that his path was blocked. The replay officials watched in slow motion, which clearly showed the catcher’s leg blocking the plate, which you just simply cannot do. Easy call. Obstruction. To nullify that obstruction, the call is safe.
      I know old school rules allowed the catcher to “block the plate.” You just simply cannot do that anymore, by rule. The catcher was supposed to set up on the inside of the runner’s lane, catch the ball, and carry the tag into the runner. Maybe he wouldn’t have gotten the out then, but that’s the rules. Also, if the left fielder wouldn’t have double clutched, the play wouldn’t have been close.

    This is what happens when too much rules are created to protect players. I get it, but it’s going to take away your ability to play the game too. No you have to imagine a very large pole at home plate on receiving throws that is a dead area, because catching a ball there grants the runner the run.

  • @baseballumpires6901

    Obvious case of announcers clueless with the rules. The call of the field was incorrect and replay was used to correct the call. This was obstruction by the catcher. He was blocking the base well before having the ball. You can see him set up and the runner Isn’t even in the screen yet. He could have been a step back to make the catch then dropped for the tag. Then the coach yells at the umpires who only announced the decision from the replay booth. Ridiculous. That is an automatic ejection the second he comes out of the dugout.
