I kinda feel bad for the student who texted this rabbi, the deeper midrashim speak at length how different souls are inspired/fueled by different things, that as to quote the zohar "while Avraham taught people to be in love with God, Yitzchak taught people that there is a Judge to the world and all actions will be judged", some torah teachers lean more often to teach the beauty of the torah, like the great Rav Zamir Cohen, and inspires people to loyalty to the torah through realizing the truth and the huge gift and oppertunity to establish a loyal relationship with God, while other people who's root soul comes from a diff attribute need the fear in order to bring them to serving God, however as the sages teach "all your acts of service should be from love and not fear", and that which many ppl translate "fear" in torah is actually "awe/reverence", and not a fear of punishment. Serving God from such a fear is looked down upon by the torah sages, while serving from awe reverence and deep love is ideal. Serving from fear is similar to serving by force, it isn't as pure as someone who serves from Love and desire and craving God. And some people get turned off from religion because of the spiritual "threats", while others need it. Maybe the student was just stressing that to this rabbi, but still it is chutzpa to write it in an impolite manner to the rabbi.
