Songs of your youth, of course.

Hey Bret, "Boys of Summer" & "Two of Hearts" are my 2 favorite tracks from your video. Nice 80's collection!

Great video Bret. You spoke with such retrospective excitement about your memories!
I did a 7" video few weeks back and wasn't aware not so many VC'ers are interested in these baby brothers. I still have my first singles I bought if I dare show them! Missing you et all have come a full circle and we can again realize what great songs they are (minus cheesy 80s synths etc) of course

Martin Parrott Thanks man. I assumed I was already subscribed to your channel, but it guess I wasn't, so I fixed that. :)

Great video, Bret. Love the personal recollections. Bangles were a huge band for me when I was a teenager in the 80s. Susanah Hoffs was such a major crush object for me back then. Today, too, actually. Have you seen her recently? Damn. Anyway, fun video.

Dave Splash Hey Dave, yeah I've kept up with Susanna through her collaborations with Matthew Sweet. She looks and sounds wonderful. Thanks for stopping by!

Guilty as charged, Mr. Helm! :-D
Is there a better way to spend an evening that listening to those "little" guilty pleasures? You really have some classics there: ""boys of summer", "walk like an egyptian", "living in america". I'm still missing those 45s but hoping to find'em someday.
    Keep on poppin',

MyVinylBar Jarkko! Hahaha, man -- I should've totally called this video Guilty as Charged! Very clever. Thanks for watching - yeah, it was definitely a fun time giving these a spin this evening. Take care and have a good weekend. - Bret

    Hello Bret,
I guess we all have own musical guilty pleasures that move us in a way that we never want to share with anyone else. Way to let your guilty pleasures all hang out.
Just a few out of about a handful that I loved were 'State Of The Heart' Rick Springfield and 'Boys Of Summer' by both Don Henley and the Ataris version.
The ideas just keep on coming from LOTPB. Have a great weekend. I am off to zee beach now. ~

Paneeks1960 Hey Rob, I hope you're wearing sunscreen! :) Hot as hell in Arizona... uggh. September is on the horizon, so hopefully it will cool off a bit come October. Yes, 'Boys of Summer' is a gem, though I couldn't stomach that Ataris cover every time it came on the radio. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Rob. Hope all is going well out there. - Bret

Awesome to see another side of your taste. I have fondness for some of these as well. I agree that there's something haunting about "Boys of Summer" and I have strong memories attached to the time it came out. Also, I admire the aplomb of that Jermaine Stewart track. Surely there can't be that many love songs out there about abstinence. LOL Pretty novel.
Would you agree that the summer of '84 was one of the best summers ever for pop culture? So many great things are having their 30th anniversary this year. "Ghostbusters," "Purple Rain," "Heartbeat City," "It's My Life," "Some Great Reward," "Into the Gap"..."Sports" was finally charting. I just remember that being a big summer for me.

SirHatchporch I specifically remember having a conversation with my friends in the high school cafeteria back in 1990... and commenting on how great the year 1984 was for music - so many great albums & songs. Damn. Good times. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Hahahah, Bret this is great! I have to admit that personally I would not want to listen to this list of songs, blah, :) But it's great that they bring you joy. I'm sure no one would want to hear the songs that bring back fond memories of my childhood either - The AM radio 70's classics, you know "soft rock", is what gives me that nostalgic feeling.
By the way, Chuck Norris has already been to Mars; that's why there are no signs of life.

raphlwes Haha! I enjoyed your comment here. Every time that 'Soft Rock Classics' commercial came on TV - with the 2 Grahams from Air Supply - selling that CD box set... you don't know how many times I wanted to order it! It's strange because a lot of those songs I never intentionally listened to, but it's amazing how many we know by heart, just by hearing them in the most random places. :)

Hi, I've been watching your videos for awhile now. We appear to have similar tastes (Numan, Bowie, OMD, Bauhaus, Peter Murphy, etc.). I agree with you re: Don Henley. The vast majority of his output just doesn't resonate with me, but I really dig "Boys of Summer" and the other single he released from that era, "Sunset Grill." Those two songs fall into that kind of hazy/dreamy/synthy style that lasted for a couple of years (84-85). I would include The Cars' "Drive" and Laura Branigan's "Self Control" in that category.

Awesome 80s! I would have picked all those classics too. My favorite off of Rocky IV is "No Easy Way Out" and I also like the cover track by Bullet for My Valentine
The Atari's cover of Boys of Summer always brings back memories. This video *had* to be done and I don't feel guilty for saying so!

Corey's VC Channel Thanks for watching, Corey. Yeah, 'No Easy Way Out' - that was the song when Rocky was training in Siberia? Great one indeed. :)

I totally agree music is memories. Some people might disagree but there was some great music in the eighties too. Good on you for showing them to us. Interesting to see most sleeves have ronded of tops. Is that an american thing ? Over here they are all square.

Martin Skywatcher Hey Martin, you know I'm not too sure about the rounded top thing - as some had them, and some didn't. I'm gonna have to do some research on that.

i am not really collecting 80's records(its not my priority at the moment) but i really enjoy this video! Boys of summer yes! there is something in this track indeed.
living in Greece means its very easy to find 80s stuff because lots of vinyl factories was here during that time and the pressed Greek copies.
maybe i should go for 45s hunt one of the next days and feel the same nostalgia as u did!
    Cheers/John

Great video Bret , the only one of these that wasn't a hit on some level in the UK was Stacey Q. I think Mr Hoffame featured this song one time which is how I know it. I use the term guilty pleasures as well because people know what you mean when you say it but I'm with you on this. If i like it I don't give a flying fig what other people think! WHO YA GONNA CALL ? GHOSTBUSTERS!

StaffsOwl John, I will have to find another copy of the Stacey Q 7" for your jukebox - total 80s classic. :)

Boys of Summer is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. The punk-wanna-be cover version, however, is one of the worst songs ever recorded.
