His Bach playing shows a solid sense of architecture, added with a superb clarity in which one can hear the left and right hand as individual voices. I've never heard of this Jan Lisiecki but his musicianship is worth a second look when he played Chopin's etudes. Again, with his Chopin playing, there is a clarity of the left and right hand, along with excellent pedalling, and his unemoting characteristic. He has an affinity for Chopin's music. His height and stature helped him play robustly, I believe. This is a superb pianist. Canada has produced a world genius pianist in Glenn Gould. This Lisiecki may be its next shinning star.
Jan Lisiecki to polsko-kanadyjski pianista - urodził się w Kanadzie, ale jego rodzice są Polakami. Ma podwójne obywatelstwo, zarówno polskie jak i kanadyjskie.
I've just seen him preforming with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra twice in the past week and he was absolutely phenomenal. He clearly loves to play Chopin and did this both times as his solo encore piece. History in the making.
Jan Lisiecki is the best! He transmits feeling and sentiment in each performance. I have been following him for several years and I like him more everytime. He is reaching for the top!!
There are always the naysayers that have to tear people down but this young man has more talent than most of us could ever dream of having. I wish him the very best. If you don't like his style go somewhere else or do you have to say something just to make you feel important.
Christopher Ebie Of course he has more talent and skill than most of us. The question is, does he have enough talent to play in this echelon of performers? To play at the Louvre, at the Verbier Festival, to be awarded a contract with Deutsche Grammophon? No, he really doesn't. Perhaps someday he will justify the attention he is getting now, and will justify that recording contract. But today, it is not justified. Saying this is not "tearing him down" - it is a serious and honest appraisal of what my ears hear. Perhaps you think any negative comment at all should be banned from RUclips, or from everywhere. True criticism is sometimes positive and sometimes negative.
+mistislav gurgiev Thank goodness he loves piano and takes pleasure just for that alone. If he doesn't become a famous millionaire, his passion for playing won't change.
Mr. Gurgiev, Have listened seriously to Lisiecki's Etudes album on DGG (not the RUclips ones)? Gramaphone Magazine's judgment that it is the best recording ever made of these difficult pieces is entirely deserved. Perhaps your criticism is not as "true" as you surmise..
Lisiecki's Bach is technically sublime, but it's really not important here ... this interpretation goes directly to the heart and from there to the spirit. Tank you very much ...!
Дякую!!!!!Це чудове виконання!Отримала насолоду від концерта і взнала ще надзвичайного піаніста Jna.Нехай йому щастить у житті і творчій діяльності! Браво!!!!!!!!!!!
I am no pianist nor was I raised on classical music. It was all folk and country. When I first discovered classical music (Beethoven's 5th Symphony conducted by Leopold Stokowski) I discovered a joy I had never known. I am not educated in classical music and I listen to enjoy it. If you are putting this kid down due to some snobbery I am unaware of that's cool. I will say that I enjoyed the video. VERY MUCH.
This is insane... playing a whole opus of Chopin's etudes, all of which are incredibly difficult, not just in front of a live audience, but with cameras trained on you, recording the whole thing for everyone to watch and analyse every nuance of phrasing and every little mistake for the rest of time... all in one take. To perform this well under such pressure, with just one chance to get it right... I have trouble enough playing if someone walks past my door and can hear me
I've been lucky to see him perform in a small setting, in Stratford Ontario for two years in a row now. Just him about 120 people in attendance. Amazing.
Stratford Summer Music. He's performed there the last 8 years! He just did two shows, a solo recital and an incredible performance with cellist Stéphane Tétreault. I can't wait till next year
Jan, you played those masterpieces awesomely and solemnly. You are most impressive and I think you are simply Godgifted. Paderewski as well as Bach and Chopin ought to be so proud of you. May 2019 turns out to be the happiest so far. May God bless and keep you in His love for ever.
Paderewski compared to pianist Władysław Szpilman. That's reason why American Military Police Corps took paderewski in as war asylum seeker and political asylum seeker. That's reason why paderewski escaped to United States and apply for asylum seeking. We must emphasize paderewski's identify was politician and poland ex-prime minister. Władysław Szpilman was different from paderewski at all. When german nazis troops occupied Poland, Władysław Szpilman choose to stay in poland. We must emphasize Władysław Szpilman's identify was pianist. For war asylum seeker, just only politician have right to apply. For discussion about patriot and proud of poland Chopin, Władysław Szpilman was not only really Poland pianist, but also really Poland patriot.
I love Mr. Lisiecki's *beautiful* reading of the J.S. Bach Partita No. 1 in B-flat major BWV 825, played with a sparkling transparent sound, wonderful balance and rhythmic energy. I decided to do a side by side comparison of it with Glenn Gould's recording of this piece and was very impressed! For those people living in NYC, Mr. Lisiecki will perform on 26 Feb. 2017 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. I'm convinced that he'll be among the most famous of the 21st century. Be among the lucky people who can claim "I saw him in person."
Some people are just not happy unless they are compaining. To paraphrase a FAMOUS critic, "These reviews are not to be tossed aside lightly, but rather thrown violently down a flight of stairs." Lighen up. Enjoy the music!
The Bach is phenomenal - beautifullly played, at just the right tempi and percussiveness to define the musical line. His interpretation is totally without harshness or pedantry.
I notice you have a lot of negative comments. It would help a lot of us listeners for you to tell us about your experience and what fame you achieved in your career
“Navegar” junto a las interpretaciones pianísticas de Jan LISIECKI, es encontrar horizontes de felicidad...Atesora en su juventud, una ejecución perfecta en el piano.
Lipatti always will sound a la Lipatti, Lisiecki always will sound a la Lisiecki whereas gurgiev always will sound like hitting piano keys by rifle's but.
His Bach playing sometimes reminds me of Dino Lipatti. But everyone has their own touch and their own personality. I heard him in February 2024 and June 2024 and his development was more powerful and his playing became more masculine.
What makes someone who gives a thumbs up to this pianist any less of a backseat musician than someone who gives a thumbs down? We're all expressing our opinions. It's just that the people who hear the flaws in his playing are listening more closely.
In at least one particular case, CarborundumKid has commented on very Jan Lisiecki video posted on RUclips. Every single comment, regardless of the video, has been completely negative. That's how.
I disagree with your conclusion, because I disagree with your false premise. First in such cases much more often than not a burning desire to find fault. Second is an urgency to disregard anything positive. Third is a particular type of narcissism that professionals call "malignant". It can be helped but not cured. This is not an international competition. It is the presentation of an interpretation by the performer for the enjoyment of his audience. Interpretations have many potential influences, from the condition of the instrument at the time of playing as a canvas for the artist to use to present to the listener, to the time of day, to the condition of the artist at the time of performance in several aspects. If it is on RUclips, unless it is being live streamed, it is history. I happen to enjoy this artist's work immensely, but can be his harshest critic when I think the situation of the moment demands it. I expect his presentations to authentic, and accurate to HIS interpretation, not mine. I have positive expectations, and appreciate his efforts. Yet, you will not see (generally) any critique from me here at all. I am a listener in these instances, not a fellow artist, conductor or adjudicator. For some, that is just an impossible perspective to address the work from. I cannot say I definitively know why, but I can surely tell it when I read comments. There is no fault found with being fair--and tactful.
Glad to see (and hear!) that Lisiecki mans-up when playing the Revolutionary etude. Sometimes his keyboarding is a little to "tinkly" for me. I know he's young, but this is much better.

He is only 17 years old, give him a break. He has not yet experienced the peaks and valleys of life. When he does, I am sure his playing will be much more eloquent emotionally.
BarbaronaGianni When Glenn Gould started playing his Bach in public in 1955, nobody had to say "he has not experienced the peaks and valleys of life yet". Today, when listening to Trifonov's Ch. etudes nobody, has to say that either. On the other hand, Jan's Bach, or his etudes do not work at all. What is the point of him giving ANY public concerts? What does it do musically for anybody? All he can do is look pretty sitting at the piano but that is, apparently, all you have to do these days to be giving concerts, nobody is interested in the actual sound, it never crosses anybody's mind to actually try paying attention to what Mr.Lisiecki is putting out musically.
***** Remember what the great Pablo Casals said: One should play Chopin like Mozart, and Mozart like Chopin. I doubt that you even understand that statement.
This is soulless playing from someone with little understanding of Bach or Chopin. This performance would not have gotten him past Stage 1 of any major international competitions. There is nothing compelling anywhere in the musical line or phrasing. In many places the rhythm is careless. I don't necessarily think it's an issue of youth - that ten years on he's going to have developed an understanding of what musicality is. There's just not enough natural talent there to build on. At age 19 you would be able to hear the musicianship in someone's fingers even if the maturity level wasn't there. It is also not a "clean" performance - there are no big gaffes, but a lot of little fudges, notes not hit cleanly. It will be interesting to see how long the promotional machine can keep his career going, as now it's a bit of "the emperor's new clothes."

Obviously you don't understand music, he doesn't have soulless playing. From just listening you can here the skill the love the respect for the music and piano, every small thing affects a pianist playing, going from weather to how you woke up. If he truly plays without a soul, then tell me why do composers respect and want to work with him, it is because he understands and loves the piano! If you look, he is sweating because he is so into the music.

Extraordinary!
Fantástico Jan, bravo
Wow. It was also wonderful to discover Paderewski's music and his life story - what an amazing man!
Lovely just to listen. What a talented young man.
His Bach is extraordinary!
Bach was not just harpsichord, bach's organ and orchestra were very famous
Lovely and crisp.

Nocturne in B-flat Major Op. 16 No. 4
Elmer Homero In case you are in doubt, it is Paderewski's Opus 16.
Noisy audience!! After the second piece Mr Lisiecki had to wait patiently until they were quiet again. Which city was this, I wonder?
Tim Dean Paris.
How old is he?
At this performance I think he was 15
what is the first song?
