Thanks for an excellent film. I was born in Erith and went back there last year for the first time in 40 years. It was so sad. The town has lost its soul.
I was born just down the road from Mitchells, there was a row of houses and I think there were Clark’s coal opposite. Every one in our street knew everyone. If we hadn’t seen our neighbour for a couple of days then we used to pop in to make sure they were ok. No one had their doors locked, you used to open the door and call out and walk in. No one bothered about locking their doors. We all used to have a laugh. We used to look out for each other - that is what a real community was. It was the heart of Erith. If my mum and I were going into town then sometime we used to have a shopping list from the neighbours. Then took the shopping back and perhaps one of the neighbours say well I haven’t got the money but I will pay you back and sure enough the money was there in a couple of days. That is the real community not a gathering in the town square. Erith had a heart. But not any more. Erith is dead.
I was born in Emes Road in 1955 and grew up in Manor Road and Frinsted Road before moving to Swindon in 1968. I remember Mitchells and Woolworths. The toy shop was magic. The cinema and the sweet shop and the fish shop slab opposite were regular visits with mum. I went to Brook Street Boys School and hated it!. I took my son to Erith in 2011 and I thought "what a hole my birthplace has become". Well done to the young people for making an interesting overview of what Erith was and is!
Born in Colebrook St, joined the Merchant Navy in 1959 and later moved to NZ. Been back a few times over the years, and remember selling newspapers on Mitchell's Corner. My house was a stones throw from the White Hart. (Fred Margerrison)
I lived in Barnehurst from 1953. Erith was next door, what they did to that beautiful town in the late 60s was a travesty! Kickbacks for planners and building companies no doubt. Built a concrete shitehole, which they had to demolish (irony) 30 years later! Anything nice architecturally had to be flattened in the post war greedfest. Community? don't make me laugh.
i was only 7 when i moved away from the area in 1966. 2 things i remembere about Erith was a small toyshop where you could buy spare tyres for your Dinky toys-think this was somwhere near the river. The other thing i remember was the smell. Presume it was sewage works. May take a nostaljic return one day and walk around Barnehurst
Erith Riverside, where Morrisons is should’ve been made up entertainment centre, shopping, rather than a hole Morrisons, taking it all it should have been cinema Adult casino moorings people from down the river boats could more their boats there and enjoy entertainment Bexley Council have heads up there heads up --s

Thanks for the memories, born and lived in Erith @ Willis rd until my twenties. Not the same when I go back now, but loved growing up there.

The thumbdowns are from people who still have a taste of the sewage works stuck in their throats
