hi billy ! i’m a 17 year old half japanese girl and i love your videos so much; they have really helped me become more informed about parts of my identity that i never connected with as a child 🥺 part of me feels guilty for not learning about this side of me more, and never really being interested in the culture until now, but my mom said it’s never too late to start :’) thank you so much for your videos 💘
Very helpful! I struggle with the seasons so badly, because I don't know anything about flowers & when they are in bloom x.x Also, I have way too many Kimono that would be considered "formal" in my collection, so I find it to be very helpful to sew my own Kimono in western fabrics, since I would consider those to be more wearable in day-to-day life ^^ Maybe you can make a video about other Kimono accessoires in the future? Like how to style different kanzashi, obidome, obijime, haneri etc.? I'd love to see that!
I was just thinking about requesting a video about kimono styling. I just bought a couple of secondhand kimono that I'm dying to start wearing, but didn't know where to start with the styling. Perfect timing! Thank you so much for the information and inspiration! 😊
I love watching your videos even though I have no kimonos. I never knew there was so much art to wearing kimono. Also, your command of the English language is so impressive! (And you speak Japanese, too! ) Your English is so good that you could be an American trying to sound German by using a German accent! 😊
This kimono looks terrific! The jiiro is subtle... I am so inspired by it! I'll definitely be part of the giveaway 😍 I don't have blue obi at he moment. So excited 🤩🤩🤩
OMG !!! I loved watching ou in that kimono with all the different stylings ! I happy to know that I found by myself one of the ways to style obi with kimono (when you pick a color from the kimono to choose the obi), everything you said was very interesting and important ! I couldn't watch anything else that your kimono's pattern, it's so pretty !
I’m super new in kimono wearing and bought my first second-hand kimonos in a spur of the moment. And after seeing your videos, I learned a lot of things that made me obsessed with kimonos. Just missing the objime, obiage, and the pillow at the back. Now I’m having second thoughts on modifying my kimonos into haori.
This is so helpful! Thank you, Billy! I've always combine kimono and obi for my personal taste, because didn't know the "rules" well. Starting to think it was ok all the time XDD Definitely will try my luck again with give away!
I love your magnolia kimono that you sew. Now I'm excited to sew my own kimono. Very informative as well, I lived in the tropics and never bothered about seasonal designs because we don't have winter, spring and fall but it's nice to learn. I want to join the raffle but I don't have a kimono, but I understand that you wanted to give it to someone who can wear it. Great video as always, I'll be here for the next one 💕👘
I love these tips! This is so helpful for a beginner and I see that I will definitly need to broaden my collection of Obi, Obiage and Obijime for more styling possibilities! Thank you so much and greetings from germany!
Are there also 5 seasons in Japan? Spring, early summer (heat, blossoms), late summer (harvest, yellow fields), fall (falling leaves), winter. I like the idea of clothes being worn for making people feel.
Great video! Would love to see more how you mix and match but this was really helpful! I've only recently got myself 8 kimonos after having wanted more than my original 1 I got in Japan 10 years ago forever but I don't really have the means to get many more or have a ton of obi as well so this really helped and it's good to know you can sort of wear whatever you want without feeling like you might do something terribly wrong and so on. Again thank you! And thank you as well for the GA! I have a kimono in mind for my pic! ;) Have a nice day!
Thank you so much for sharing all this useful and confidence building information with us! And congratulations on passing the 5000 subscribers mark! Omedetou gozaimasu! :D
Thank you for this video! I was wondering how to combine all those patterns and colors. This video is a great help and gives me confidence to try out styles that best suits me :) Domo arigato gosaimasu!!!
Thank you Billy for this fantastic video. I've always been a little scared when it comes to styling kimono and never knew exactly what to do. This video has given me great insight into how I can style my own kimono. It's has also given me more confidence when it comes to motifs which can be a little daunting for a beginner. ❤️
How do you feel about kimono styled in a more western way? Such as wa-lolita fashion, or people remking kimono into western style dresses? Is it still kimono styling or is it something totally separate?
I loved this video- I'm always very interested in hearing about styling! That minsa ori obi is just stunningly beautiful, in the most gorgeous shades of aqua too +_+
I just found your channel and Im in love with all your videos! I especially enjoyed the tailoring videos because I'm a tailor myself Could you please do a video on kimono making for men?? :) Or one about lining one? Lots of love from Austria!
do you own any hanten jackest? It would be lovely to see you style one with a kimono! (or see a tutorial on how to sew one!) I love your channel and sense of fashion!
Hi Billy! Your videos are so thorough and fascinating, thank you for sharing your knowledge! I have a silly question and I apologize because I’m sure it’s such a basic thing to ask, but I haven’t really been able to find an answer. If kimono are made for each customer, why are they made extra long so they require tucking at the waist? I’m sure there is some sort of function or reason for it so I would love to know. Anyway I love your channel, and watching your videos has inspired me to look for more kimono to add to my closet. Thank you!
I have a question about weaves! What about tsumugi houmongi? It sounds like a contradiction because houmongi are supposed to be a bit more formal but tsumugi is a more casual weave. What kind of obi would go best with it, as tsumugi obi are generally casual pieces?
Oh my god I love your style 🥰 I will start to watch all your videos 🙃 I just bought a kimono that’s going to be kinda of a do over project. It has some severely faded spots but the motif was so stunning ( raging waves 🌊) that I just had to buy it also are you by any chance from Germany?

It has some severely faded spots but the motif was so stunning ( raging waves 🌊) that I just had to buy it and try to save it. hello, i recently watched your video on putting on a hakama as i need it for a cosplay, but im curious as to if theres a different way to wear it when it is divided? also if men wear them differently? i have also seen hakama with a kind of hard flap at the back and am very confused at to what that is for. i am planning on making my own hakama but i really have no idea where to start with it. any help would be appreciated
Is there any way we could enter the lottery if we don’t have Instagram? Really helpful video, by the way! I especially found interesting the part about deciding what role you play in an event. It makes sense!
Oooh this was really interesting! I have some kimono that I don't have obi to match so I was thinking of shortening them to wear as a daily outfit over western clothes but I also don't want to ruin it 😭 I'm going to enter the competition 😁 Thank you for your informative video. May I ask, is it okay for women to wear mens kimono?
@@BillyMatsunaga oooh cause I love the one I bought my husband, such a cool blue with a pattern on. I think it look cool chic on a girl. Thank youuuu 💕
This is so funny, the casual opinion I'd picked up in kimono groups based outside of Japan usually said woven kimono would be worn with woven and viseversa, to the point that I thought that WAS the rule. Like how formal kimono are always dyed and formal obi are always woven. My world view is broken.
OMGGG This video certainly thaught me how to choose the right colour of obi for a kimono😍🙈 I am just a beginner for kimono and i just can't get it what colour obi to pair with my kimono until i saw this clear explanations from youu😍😍😘 Hope i can win that hanhaba obi as i just pair my limited kimonos with limited colours of obi I've got from the thrift store here in Malaysia 😅😳 bis später auf Instagram!!💞💕

The best word for 吉祥 in English would be auspicious. It’s not a very commonly used word though.

Always excited for a new video from you! Thanks for another great video ❤️the orange houmongi!
i would probably interpret吉祥文様 as auspicious motif? the japanese sure like their auspicious symbols

Nice video 🥰 from what idea it comes, that traditionally you shouldn't mix printed and woven items?
No idea. But you can find it in several books. New books write about it, but also say that this has changed.

If you want to wear it shorter you could try to pin it up like halfway? or put in a temporary hem?
Yess!!! Wear men’s kimono 😍😍

Kimono originated from Hanfu. Kimono is our culture. Don't steal anything from China.THE GREAT CHINA.
