Daemon's dragon, Caraxes, the Bloodwyrm, is mutated. He's longer and more snake-like than the others. And his roar is more of a screech. And he has the same volatile temperament as his rider. It is said in the lore that Caraxes sings love songs to Syrax, Rhaenyra's dragon, when they are together in the Dragon Mount.
Lady Misaria, Damon's mistress, is from Volantis, Valyrian is her native tongue, so she definitely understood what was said.
Otto was clever here, he tried his best to avoid the brothers seeing and communicating with each other and created disagreements between them.
Otto is a great example of the "ideal" Westerosi Lord, he exemplifies how a man of his position is meant to think and act - and it's why he often butts heads with Daemon. Whereas Daemon is very attached to Valyrian culture and customs and the mind-set of a dragon Lord.
Otto believes in Westerosi traditions and political convention as a way to secure power and maintain stability within the realm. Many powerful Lords in his position would have tried to marry their daughter to the King - to men like Otto, Twyin Lannister or even Ned Stark marriage is a political instrument to secure your family's position or advance it - just look at how eager Corlys was for his daughter to also become a child bride. It's cruel and unfair but that's how politics in unfolds in the seven kingdoms.
Whereas Daemon, viewing himself to be blood of the dragon, thinks that he and his family are above the ways of Westeros. To Daemon, Targareyans are closer to gods than men - an attitude Viserys warned Rhaenyra is dangerous. So Daemon struggles to balance his Valyrian pride with his duties as Prince in what is to him a "foreign" country.
plus they see these marriages for their daughters as what is best for them, and a way to honor their worth. Of course they all think their daughter deserves to be the Queen, in a way its what any loving lord would do for their kids.
Finaly a comment that shows actual inderstanding of the characters and the world of asoif in general instead of the usual Daemon= good otto= bad😅

Akshhually... 😆Valyrian is spoken by a lot of people. Just not a lot of people from Westeros, as it's a language from Essos. Which is why Mysaria can understand Daemon and Rhaenyra's conversation on the walkway up to Dragonstone. She's from Lys, one of the Free Cities they were talking about in the beginning of this episode.
To be extra nerdy about it.
Targaryens speak High Valyrian which is a near-extinct dialect of the Valyrian language. Similar to how the Japanese emperor spoke a very specific dialect of Japanese (known as Gosho kotoba) that many who speak Japanese still find hard to understand. The Valyrian spoken by the people of Essos are bastard-versions of the original language, so speakers can likely pick up the basics when listening to High Valyrian, but it would be a bit hard to understand.
She's from Lys in the books but she's from Yi Ti in the show which is essentially ASOIAF's China, far far far to the East and by far the most powerful kingdom in the world at this time, it's just so far away from Westeros you never really hear about it. But she was a slave in Lys, so it makes sense she would know Valyrian. Corlys Velaryon did a lot of trade in Yi Ti which is how he became so rich. Yi Ti also has their own version of The Wall called the Five Forts which are the largest castles in the world and protect Yi Ti's eastern border from wastes similar to the North of the Wall. Maybe too similar depending on who you ask.
@@SpitFir3Tornado Nope she is not from Yiti in the show. You go simply by her looks. Her origin was never changed. Just her hair color to not make it too confusing to have her silver haied as well. Unless they officially state that she is from Yiti, she is still born in Lys.

Some more info on the episode :
1) The Kingsguard are an order of Royal Guards tasked with protecting the Royal Family that was installed by the first Targaryen rulers.
There needs to be 7 of them, like the seven aspects of the god prayed to in most of the continent.
These knights once appointed serve in the order for life, they swear an oath of chastity (so they can't have children or a wife), and they can't inherit lands or titles since their sole focus needs to be the protection of the Royals.
Between the seven of them one is named Lord Commander.
This episode starts with the news that the Lord Commander, Ser Ryam Redwyne, has died of old age so they need to find a new member to complete their ranks.
The old Lord Commander is only shown clearly during the council that starts the first episode.
The new Lord Commander is Ser Harold Westerling which is the one that was assigned to protect Rhaenyra before Cole and the one we saw the most onscreen until now.
2) Targaryens, starting from a couple of generations ago, sometimes left a dragon egg in the cradle of their children so, roughly 50% of the time, a bond between them could develop faster and make the egg hatch already bonded.
Dragons can live for even a couple of centuries, so they can have multiple riders in their lifetime, but only one at a time.
Until their previous rider dies, they refuse to bond and be easily ridden by any other.
And while it was never officially confirmed, there has never been a case in which a rider that had his dragon die was able to tame another one.
So once you tame a dragon, you can't ever have another one, it seems.
3) Actually, when Viserys and Aemma married each other they were 17 and 12 respectively, so this isn't the first time Viserys had to do something like this.
4)For those that don't know, Dragonstone is an island not too far from the capital, King's Landing, and has been in possession of the Targaryens for centuries.
When the Valiryan empire fell, one of the reason that the Targaryens were some of the few survivors was in fact that their seat was Dragonstone, far away from the rest of it.
It's from Dragonstone that Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters conquered most of the continent.
And since the Targaryen dinasty, Lord of Dragonstone was a title given to the heir to the kingdom (so Rhaenyra in this case).
Most of the dragons live and nest at Dragonstone, thanks to the volcano in the island giving them ideal conditions to thrive in.
5)In the end scene Corlys and Daemon were talking in Driftmark, the island were House Velaryon resides.
During his legendary voyages Corlys earned the nickname "the Sea Snake" and made so much money that he built a brand new seat for his House called High Tide in a corner of the island that becomes accessible by land only at low tides.
There he stores his innumerable treasures he found in his travels.
The island of Driftmark also contains Spice Town, a portual city, and Castle Driftmark, the old seat of House Velaryon.
6)During Viserys and Laena's conversation they mention two dragons, Balerion and Vaghar.
As we know, Balerion was the largest Targaryen Dragon and Viserys was his last rider for a short while, before he died of old age in the year 94 AC (so seven years before the council at the start of episode 1).
Vaghar is now the largest Targaryen Dragon left alive.
She is almost 150 years old at this point.
Together with Balerion and another dragon named Meraxes, these three were the dragons of The Conqueror and his sisters and were the main reason that the Targaryens were able to conquer six kingdoms and establish their dinasty.
Vaghar's first rider was Visenya Targaryen, the older sister of the Conqueror.
Her second rider came much later and was actually Baelon Targaryen, Viserys's father.
After his death (which was the cause of the council of 101 AC) she apparently left King's Landing and started living in the island in the Narrow See near Driftmark.
Due to her enormous size, the Dragon Pit in King's Landing was never the best place for her to live.

Some more info that I wanted to add :
1)Alicent shows Rhaenyra how to pray to the Mother.
This is because, while the Targaryens officially recognize the Faith of the Seven as the official religion in their kingdom, most of them don't actually care about this religion.
In Valirya there were many gods of all types that could be prayed to.
Many of the dragon's names are the names of old valiryan gods (Syrax and Caraxes for examples).
Targaryens also already see themselves as "more gods than men".
After The Conqueror's death the realm rebelled against his sons incited by the Faith Militant (which was an armed force of believers) because they really didn't like their incestuous traditions.
After many years of bloody conflicts a compromise was reached : The Faith's armies would be disbanded, as the Crown would protect it personally going forward, and in exchange they would tolerate the Targaryen's traditions as an exception to the rule.
2)To explain Daemon's actions.
He stole an egg, declared he was to marry Missaria and occupied Dragonstone.
All of this was to get Viserys's attention, as most of his actions do.
Missaria was never really pregnant as she states afterwards.
Once he saw that Viserys didn't come he thought about killing Otto but as we saw he couldn't bring himself to hurt Rhaenyra.
I didn't read everything, but the bid of the craddle egg is not quiet right. The tradition is going to start one generation later. Before that except for one time children were presented with a hatchling or claimed an older dragon. But that leads to:

In the book Syrax wasn't a craddle egg. Rhaenyra claimed her when she was 7. In the show they changed that to show that Rhaenyra has a deep bond with Syrax. Since Syrax is a court dragon and will never fly to war or fo anything significant except unintentionally k*//ing one of Rhaenyras children, this was changed to Syrax at least being her craddle egg.
Aegon, Helaena and Aemond all had no craddle eggs. Viserys didn't give them any. Aegon claimed Sunfyre on Dragonstone. We don't know when Helaena claimed Dreamfyre and we all know when Aemond claimed Vhagar. Daeron only had a craddle egg, because Jace was given one and it would have seemed unfair is Daeron, who is the same age as Jace, was overlooked.
Rhaenyras children originally only got craddle eggs to try to prove that they are b@stards, by the eggs not hatching. But they hatched.
Daemon wanted craddle eggs for all his children. But generally the tradition started with Jace, Luce, Daeron, Baela and Rhaena.
The craddle eggs that were given before was just Rhaena insisting and Aenys letting her. It wasn't a tradition yet though.
F.e. Rhaenys, Daemon and Viserys all claimed dragons as well. None of them gad craddle eggs.

Alicent is 15 years old. She definitely does not like being sent to a 40 year old man’s room. Her fingers being so bloody from her anxiously chewing on them is the writers showing us how she feels about her situation. She’s stuck between two powerful men who just want to use her. Otto, to gain power. Viserys, to satisfy his desires.
Also, Otto Hightower is from an ancient, rich, and powerful house. Randomly killing him would be crazy. Daemon is looking for a reason to do it, but he won’t do it “unprovoked” because it would start a war with House Hightower.
Viserys: “i do not wish to make us estranged”
Also viserys: marries her BEST FRIEND
Rhaenyra is the only one she doesn't fidget/pick at herself around :(

It's not really explained in the show but dragons and their riders have this deep psychic bond. The more alike they are, the more in control the rider is of their dragon. Caraxes is Daemon in dragon form. Had Syrax and Rhaenyra not shown up, Otto and the Kingsguard would have definitely been cooked.

you guys, i've watched plenty of hotd reactions before this and i've never seen anyone discuss alicent in such a sympathetic manner and i really love it. especially when carter brought up the idea that we couldn't simply compare our own morals to theirs BUT marrying someone as young as alicent and laena is still wrong even in their own world.

Syrax (Rhaenyra's Dragon) isn't fully grown yet, which is why she's so much smaller than Caraxes (Daemon's Dragon). I also believe that unlike Caraxes, Syrax was kept in captivity her entire life, which eventually stunted her growth.
which ultimately matters very little since (at least in the books) syrax does absolutely nothing besides deciding to throw rhae's son to his death & then get herself killed.

This show is inspired by the book the dance of dragons, in it the house of the dragon doesn’t necessary crumble, more just a power struggle between families within the house
The book is actually called Fire and Blood and is about the first half of the entire Targaryen history. The Dance of the Dragons is just one part of that.

Brig described perfectly. He is menacing, not someone would we consider a "good" person. but he does care for his family chiefly Viserys and and Rhaenyra. The epitome of a "grey" character

Daemon is one of the best characters I’ve ever seen. He’s my favorite in the show. He has a complex personality and it’s okay misjudge his character in the beginning. Waiting for the next episodes 😅

King Viserys used to ride Balerion the black dread, the biggest known dragon in the known history. However Balerion was very old and hard to rouse when Viserys claimed him and ended up riding him only once before the great dragon passed

What i love about this show is that it sticks almost entirely to the source material Fire and Blood. It also captures the tone and atmosphere of the early seasons of GOT, maybe even improving it in terms of aesthetic and design. Also the characters are well-casted and the actors did a fantastic job, especially Matt Smith.
Although race swapping the Velaryons was at first questionnable (why would they do that?) , it didn't bother me later on because they did their part so well and the story & dialogues are so well written, unlike a certain fantasy show from Amazon😅
I believe the reason why they made the Velaryons black is because otherwise It would have made it incredibly hard for viewers to be able to better understand who is a Targaryen and Velaryon. If they were all white they would look exactly the same and trying to figure out who everyone is and what house they are in would be a lot harder for veiwrs to figure out. It would take attention away from the characters and story if viewers are spending the whole episode trying to figure out who is in what house bc they all have silver hair

Viserys was the last dragonrider of Balerion the Black Dread. Can't wait until you see more of the dragons as this series progresses. As they mentioned in the beginning there was 10 adult dragons at the time of Viserys being named heir after Jahaerys passed.
You haven’t even seen the bigger dragons yet like Vhagar & Vermithor. Meleys is pretty big as well

Honestly this single season has been the best show ive seen within at least 5 years. Ive rewatched it like 4 times since it came out. I loved game of thrones and understand its legendary status, but i can definitely see HOTD become greater overall in the future. Its pacing, tension, storytelling and not to mention FUCKING DRAGONS have left me truly obsessed. Im unbelievably excited for season 2

AND BTW Viserys was the last rider of Balerion, the Black Dread. It was Aegon the Conqueror's dragon, and it died shortly after Viserys coronation.
While Syrax was born to Rhaenyra so they're roughly the same age i guess(?), Caraxes instead, also called the blood wyrm, Daemon's dragon didn't hatch to Daemon's but was of another Targaryen before he claimed him after his death. 🐲
