Well Done. Thanks for the info on blooming on 1 yr old wood. I needed that.

Thanks for this video. I need to do this to my old Weigela. I notice you left a few branches on the end of the thick branches where your pruned. Is that necessary to do? Just wondering. I selectively pruned back to leaves last year and the showing wasn't so great this Spring. Mine needs to be cut back and I can't see taking one of the three large "trunks" off, so I'm going to do what you did!

Yes they flower in old wood so leaving some old branches ensures you get blooms the next season.

@@thegardensandgraveyardschannel do weigelas bloom on 2-, 3-, 4- year-old wood?? I'm asking because some guidebooks recommend to cut back one third every year. The problem with that method seems to be that one ends up building more and more branches inside the shrub.

@@ksionc100 great question! They bloom on one year old wood. So whatever grows after bloom this year will be where the blooms are next year. So by cutting the shrub 1/3 right after it is done blooming you reduce the size, ensure that blooms stay at a level you can see them and create a strong branching structure that not only holds up those blossom laden branches it also means more places for blooms to happen! The key is to prune immediately after it blooms though, so you don’t forfeit next year’s blooms.

Oh I think it’s regional pronouncing, this is how my horticulture professors pronounced it when I was in school, as well as local master gardeners. I am curious where are you from?

@@thegardensandgraveyardschannel Hello,it must be pronounced why gee la as it has no 'i' in the last syllable.but don't worry, you're not the only one mispronouncing it! There are many sites to help with any word if you have query, and they all pronounce it why gee la or why jilla.
