  • Patrick Bet-David uncovers the history and economic influence of the Panama Canal on the world economy from its inception, vital role in global trade, and current crisis.
From the Canal's lock system to the likelihood of an expansion by the Panama Canal Authority, PBD unveils the challenges the Canal faces today. The video also explains how a Panama Canal gridlock compares to the 2021 Suez Canal crisis when the Ever Given, a container megaship, affected the entire shipping industry by getting stuck in the canal.

Great video. You forgot one competition to the Panama Canal, that is already underway. Mexico is putting in like 6-8 lanes of tracks between the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahia de Tehuantepec. The saddle of Mexico where from coast to coast straight line is only 146 miles. Ships will tie up either in Gulf of Mexico Port or on Pacific at Salinas Cruz and off load their containers about 2 days and then onload them to other ship s on the other side, (probably same amount of time), and only like 146 miles in a straight line of site or 8 hours in transit by rail across the Tehuantepec narrows. This is not a pie in the sky dream, the project is already going ahead and will probably be completed in only 2 years.

When I was there in the mid-90s in the Army, the canal waiting line was 13-18 days long just to get into it, and the canal was 300% behind schedule being dredged. The cost a ship had to pay to go through the canal plus the wait list made it more economical for some newer ships to go around South America. Also, many newer, faster ships are too wide to go through the canal. There is a type of ship we called a "Pana-max" that was the maximum width to fit in the canal locks with only about a foot clearance on either side of the ship. If you've seen them, they look taller than they are wide. It's only about 60 miles along the trans-isthus highway to drive along the same route as the canal to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Before we gave the canal to Panama and left, the US military was the 2nd largest employer of Panamanian people, behind only Chiquita banana.

It's worth to mention the following 1- The expansion of the Canal (3rd set of locks) was finished in 2016 and started operating the same year and has the capacity to "carry" bigger vessels (New Panamax) than the original locks (Panamax). 2- The Panama Canal Railway , leased to and operated by "Canadian Pacific Kansas City + Mi-Jack Products" currently transports 800k containers per year with the ability to transpot 2m containers per year from the Caribbean to the Pacific and vice versa. 3- There are four major international commercial ports (2 in the Pacific terminal and 2 in the Caribbean terminal) & some of them have plans for expansion for the following years. This means that the Canal and the logistic facilities are constantly evolving to stay competitive. (expansion of ports, roads, bridges and water supply for the canal). I suggest a sequel to this video introducing the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. This innovative project aims to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans via a railway system, linking the port cities of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz.
The idea is simple yet groundbreaking: ships would unload their cargo on one side, transport it swiftly by rail across the Isthmus, and then reload it onto another ship awaiting its arrival on the opposite coast. What sets this corridor apart is its incredible efficiency. It has the capacity to transport 1.4 million containers annually, completing the journey in under six hours. To put this in context, the Panama Canal takes 8 to 10 hours to traverse. What's more, Mexico's corridor is closer to the USA than Panama, making it a game-changer in global trade and highly relevant to this topic.

Just to clarify, the Panama Canal was recently expanded, inaugurating its new set of locks in 2016. The current situation of lowered number of transits is due to drought and low water levels and not getting enough rainfall to reach the according level of water required. Thus, ships have had to lower the weight of freight and frecuency of transit as a temporary measure to mitigate the drought. The Army Corps of Engineers and the Panama Canal Authority are also working together on reasearch, technical, and feasibility studies of having another source of water to the Canal to avoid future drought problems.

Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capita income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. Essentially the world economy is considered to be in recession if economic growth falls behind population growth.

A few comments (I’m from Panama):
    1. There are alternatives to create bigger water supply to the canal’s operation that are being evaluated, such as the relocation of a small indigenous population that lives in an area that could create a bigger supply to the Gatun lake if conditioned appropiately (and was contemplated before the last expansion for a third lane with a bigger set of locks -able to serve the bigger ships of today’s time-, which was completed in 2014 - but the water supply topic was left on hold due to the ducking of a potential political battle by the president at the time , b/c of the need to remove the people of where they live, but now with the current water shortage due to a lack of the needed rain amount, the topic is being reevaluated)
    2. Duran’s restaurant no longer operates, but Panama has no shortage of good restaurants and food in a modern and entertaining city, and also no shortage of nice beach spots (some in islands some in mainland, in both coasts) and naturally beautiful spots, in general, inside a small territory, which makes it easy to visit various amazing places in a short travel time
    3. They’ve been bluffing with the Nicaragua Canal since I can remember, and the last “serious” talk about it was a few years ago when the chinese were behind it, but it seems it ended up in nothing (maybe even too costly/complicated for the chinese, who have a history of getting involved in mega projects in other countries for political reasons, even if it makes no direct business sense -but sometimes backend sense by ending with certain control over said country , either financially or of some strategical operation)

I'm Panamenian and it's crazy to see in $$ numbers, how important we are for the worldwide trade. To be honest, Our goverment should have the money to do the expansion. However, we do have some corruption that always make everything harder. The Nicaragua Canal is always a possible option but it's risky because a Ship only takes 8 hours to cross Panama, Nicaragua takes longer and the risk of volcanic eruptions is also higher. The thing is, It's not raining as before. There is some climate phenomenon that is hurting us. Hope we can have it up and running asap. Trust Me, Panama Have the money to do it, but we spend it stupid things, almost like US in Ukraine.
