i would add a smaller solar panel to charge the portable power banks back up
A couple of other things to do if you know you have time: 1) Get the laundry caught up! You don't know when you are going to get another chance. 2) Take a shower. Again, it might be a few days until the next one. 3) Throw a few containers of water in the freezer and in the fridge. That extra thermal mass will extend the time for the other important items to stay cold, and you'll have the extra water too!
My cats and I had to evacuate last year from hurricane Ian and went to a shelter. I was ready and had a good experience. I was able to see where I was lacking and get preps for next time. When we got home the electric was back on so no problems there. The time we evacuated in 2017 there was no electric for a few days when we got back but I had everything we needed. I am always learning and prepping
Thanks for watching and commenting Maggie!
You are a smart person, & your cats are lucky to have a prepared pet parent. Glad you got through awful Ian ok. ( I'm SE Florida, so I've been there with hurricanes! )🍀
@@patriciatinkey2677 yes, your side of Florida gets alot more than we do but one is all it takes to ruin your day. Please be safe this season.
I don't live in an area where I would have to bug out, and I'm not leaving our livestock. Our natural disasters would be blizzards, and I've lived through those for decades. Thunderstorms or blizzards may knock out power. I have many various ways to heat/cook/light a living space. What I really recommend is to keep bottles of water frozen in the freezer, or bag up some of your ice. Before a rain or wind storm, I will take the most used items out of the refrigerator and put them in coolers with stored ice so I don't have to open the refrigerator. I'm not running the generator if the power is going to be out for a few hours. If there are severe thunderstorm alerts, I get all my water buckets, water troughs filled up to water livestock, and put water troughs under the eaves to catch runoff. We also have totes for water off the sheds. In the house, I fill up jugs, and those spigot containers that some people use for parties. It's pretty hard to wash your hands with one hand. Put these on the side of the sinks so you can have a continual stream of water. In the fall, these are often on sale for really cheap. Fill your coffee pot for tomorrow. I have large water tanks/bottles with human drinking water, and I have a bailer bucket for the well if things really go down. LIGHTS: I have a bunch of various solar lights. The strings of them are strung down the barn aisle with the little solar panel on the south side of the barn, up high. Portable solar lights are always in the greenhouse so I can bring them in and either put them in something like a canning jar, or hang them up over the kitchen sink/stove. Pay attention to the amount of light they put out. A tiny one in the bathroom will suffice, you want more powerful ones in the kitchen. Have cots, sleeping bags, and some type of cushions to hunker down in one main area.
Great info and list. 👍 Thanks
@@SomeBuddy777 You're welcome!
I use to be the volunteer emergency communication and my job was to teach how to be prepared
Everyone needs to have 4 weeks of supplies.
All of this guys information is important! He delivers clear, useful strategies that will help most everyone!
Unfortunately most of us in Hawaii will have to bug in. We're on an island and most don't know how to survive in the forests here. Pretty sad.
That’s better for you
Aloha 🤙 Which island are you on, and are you actually part of a network as in your name? In Haiku Maui and interested in getting together with other like minded preppers. Mahalo and Aloha 🤙😎
That's going to be quite the shtf scene for those trapped on an island...looking forward to playing Dead Island 2 on PS4 soon so thanks for reminding me!!
The idea of bugging out (to me) is just choosing to become a refugee. Unless there is a poisonous cloud or fire/ flood, I'm staying put. Id rather die on my feet, at my home, not on the road, lost, running for my life. Just my $ 0.02 stay safe folks.

Hey J.R. and all...the first thing to do is not panic....or the first thing not to do...😉 Information is part of being prepared. If you are prepared, there is no reason to let the situation dictate a reaction in a negative manner. If we are prepared, we can act on the information and up our chances to be safe and get through the crisis. 👍
Thanks Eric!
Food in a refrigerator should last up to three days providing it is opened rarely. The foods which would go bad more quickly would still be OK for 24 hours. In a freezer, food will remain frozen for 2-3 days and edible for 2-3 days past that. Keep the doors closed.
Thank you!
Thanks, JR, for some more great prepping tips. I would like to emphasize for everyone how useful a full tank of gas can be when the power goes out, even if you're not going anywhere and even if it's only for a few days. First of all that gas can serve as reserve fuel if you have a gas-powered generator, and in the gas tank of the car is about the safest place you could store it. Plus, it would be good to have a syphon type pump so that you can get that gas out of the car when you need it and practice with the syphon ahead of time so that you're not fumbling around with it in an emergency. Lastly even if you don't have any outside use for that extra gas, your car can idle for a few days on a full tank and be a great lifeboat if the house should become too hot or cold to stay inside. I only ask that you have the car out in the open to reduce the risk of having the exhaust fumes get into the car or the house.
Great advice!
Stored gas can extend that vehicle's run time if it becomes necessary. I keep a tank worth on hand.
Thanks for this info and advice! We are all here because we seeking to help ourselves and each other 🙏
I homecan a lot, from tomatoes to jams to soups. Once power goes out i will build a fire and begin rotating canners and can up my freezer as best as possible. Don't want to can my frozen peas and meats, but will if i have to.
Thanks for sharing Gail!
Wish I had: More silver, Big Berkey, extensive First Aid/Trauma kit. My biggest assets are enough store goods and massive garden to feed my family of 4 for like eternity basically. Also my massive stockpile of weapons and ammo and means to make more
I bought my large stainless steel trash can yesterday, line completely with cardboard and make sure lid is tight then use metal tape, going to put all kinds of stuff in it. Another thing checked off wish list
The day you have to relay on your preps 100% is one day from them being depleted. Because we don't know the extent of SHTF, its difficult to plan for how we will replenish/scavenge to replace those preps your using each and every day. The new normal for survival will be very labor intensive 24/7.
I always keep a few bottles of frozen water in my chest freezer, just in case. Double duty . . . Helps keep frozen foods frozen/cold longer and adds to fresh water qith it being cold if the weather is hot out.
Thanks, J.R.! I know there must be gaps in my preps, but being aware is a good part of the solution to the problem! I'm constantly making efforts to gather more intel, and materiel as opportunities permit. Now, I'm concentrating on getting the gardens growing, so at least we will be able to eat, in the approaching crises. Just got a new water pump today, for the well I will be re-opening next week! Stay well, my friend!
Thank you Karl!
@@diypreppertv I've said it before - too bad we aren't neighbours. I think we'd be a good fit in a MAG. BEST to you, J.R.!
Congrats on getting your well up again. God bless you.

Make sure you have some detailed, paper, road maps of your area as well as a national road atlas. A Garmin or other satellite-connected navigation device is good under normal circumstances but is of limited value for finding alternate routes when all lanes in one direction of the best route are suddenly closed because of a major accident, landslide, etc. A paper map can show you where the nearest highway exit will take you and where those small roads connect to larger roads.
We travel across country multiple times each year and there have been times when a section of the interstate was closed for hours because of a major pile-up. Being able to quickly find an alternate route early got us out of there well before the Highway Patrol was able to divert traffic on a detour route. And because we were ahead of the diverted traffic, the small fuel stations along the detour route still had fuel, food and no wait to use the restrooms. Always have a low-tech alternative to that Garmin because you never know when you may have to evacuate ahead of a wildfire or create your own detour route if an accident closes a major roadway.
I’ve been checking my fire and electrical preps the last few days. I’ll be seasoning my propane camp stove this summer during a camping trip. Always ensure that your equipment works before SHTF.
I have a creek about 350 feet from my house
If nothing else always always always boil your water.
JR, thank you for stepping up and taking care of your family. It’s biblically sound, and your example may spur others to step up, too. It’s really hard to go it alone.
Bro, you know your stuff. Keep up the good work. Thank you for not loading your clips with adds.
Just helping the algorithm
Thank you Pete!
I always learn something new when watching your channel. What did i learn ? Well the Door Barricade brackets. I had no idea they made these. I put some on my wish list.
Thanks for watching Manny!
Take a breath. 😊
Have a back up plan for your back up plan. I live in wildfire country. Had a plan that should a fire come near us, that we would preload the utility trailer with as many of our dry goods and as camping gear as we could fit. Upon voluntary evacuation announcement we would bugout. Well now the truck has died and we have no other vehicle capable of hauling it. I downsized and went on a camping trip. Definitely have to do some more prioritizing and purging to fit what we actually need in our small SUV. 😢
You always produce great content JR. Thanks so much!
Thank you!
Catching up on the latest survival news is best keeping informed. Knowing what to do , and equipment in an emergency keeps myself in an almost ready mode . Thank you for your service.😊
Thanks much my friend! Always wise advice.

Happy Saturday.. thanks for the good video
Thank you Nick!
A very comprehensive video! Thanks JR!
Great video and great information that we can all use. Looking over my preps I know that two way communication is lacking. I have the Midland ER310 emergency radio, but I'm looking at getting a GMRS or a ham radio and really don't know enough about either to make a good choice. I plan to stay put under any circumstances short of my house being on fire so a base type set up would work best for me. I would also like to be able to scan police, fire and EMT channels for any information I could gather in an emergency situation. I imagine I'm best off having a dedicated scanner along with either the ham or GMRS radio. Any suggestions from others with more knowledge on the subject is always welcome. JR, thanks again for all you do.
Me, too!
I know that a lot of agencies are moving to digital comms, so traditional police scanners may not be able to do what they used to. GMRS is good for close to mid range communication. They require a license to use but no exam. I’ve been able to get around 5 miles out of my mobile setup without upgrading the antenna. Eton makes a radio that can pick up most frequencies but it’s expensive and only receives. You can’t use it to transmit.
Here’s a video I did recently over a GMRS radio I got from Retevis:

Will Keeping water in plastic jugs in the car cause the chemicals to leach faster from the plastic they are made of, especially on very hot summer days? I have read that even plastics that have been approved as safe really are not, that any plastic should not also be used for food or water containment. What other options are there to use instead of plastic. ?? Thanks !
the dark green glass mineral water bottles....

Are there solar generators made specifically for Freezers and Fridges. I would like to invest in a few and even buy an extra freezer or two if possible. Is Geo Thermal energy also used to power a home's electricity Or is it just to keep the home warm or cool?
4patriotds has a mini that is on my wish list, they have a big one, that comes with a free mini. They have solar power small devices, inexpensive I got two and one at thrift, can charge devices well, has a light and my thrift one has a kickstand. Stealth angel survival has a great flashlight can charge device has mini charge part and USB. I bought the jumpers to convert to other plugs, does 9 things flashlight and charges solar
