  • In this first episode of a five part series I go over some popular grooves I often play and hear in contemporary styles of worship. This is contextual so think CCM, rock, and pop side of things (in an acoustic setting/context). To go straight into the cajon worship grooves skip to minute 3:00 of the video. If you landed on this video and are searching for more basic fundamentals of playing the cajon you can check out my cajon videos in the cajon lesson playlist. In this series I will go over some cajon grooves that you can use in 4/4, 6/8 (a more typical waltz feel) and 3/4. This is my interpretation of some of these rhythms so feel free to make them your own and experiment with your cajon during worship! Remember the most important thing is to listen to your other band members and serve the song. The song recording, bass, rhythm guitar, music director, etc. will be your guide as to the best parts to play. Train your ear and then find your own voice and don't be afraid to try new things. Thank you for watching and don't forget to subscribe!

These are awesome, thank you so much! I mentor a teen acoustic group for our church and we have some willing cajon players in need of the blessing that your videos are. You have a wonderful teaching style--very foundational, clear and practical. Thank you!

Do you have any video in which you demonstrate these rhythms in the context of a song? I would totally send this video to a couple of the instrumentalists on my worship team, but I know they would be able to internalize it more if they could hear them in context.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback! I do have a couple with such context but not quite the way you mention. This is great feedback however. I am planning to film some curriculum (cajon in worship). Your comment helps immensely and I will incorporate it in the very near future!

What model is that cajon? What do you recomend?

Hello! It is a Bonham Cajon. This one is my signature model and I highly recommend it for pop situations where you don’t necessarily want the snare sound in the bass. If you go to Bonham cajon.com you can check out his models. Honestly any of his drums are great.
