  • I like to use brown bread for sandwiches, especially when I make it with molasses. This simple recipe allows you to start the bread in the morning and have it by lunch or dinner.
    Ingredients
    3 cups whole wheat flour
    1/4 cup molasses
    1/4 cup vegetable oil
    1 tablespoon active dry yeast
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 1/4 cups warm water
    Directions
    In a large bowl, combine the flour, molasses, oil, yeast, and salt. Add the water and stir until a soft dough forms.
    Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
    Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
    Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan and cover with a damp cloth. Let it rise for another 30 minutes or until it reaches the top of the pan.
    Bake the bread in a preheated oven at 375°F for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden and done.
    Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool slightly on a wire rack. Enjoy your homemade brown bread!
