- The moment Burt Reynolds propelled the Black and Gold Trans Am into movie folklore. In America in 1977 the original Smokey and the Bandit film had been beaten into second place at the box office only because it was the same year Star Wars was released.
Burt Reynolds was arguably at this time the biggest name in Hollywood. The car he drove in the movie was about to turn for Pontiac a car that had produced reasonable but unspectacular sales figures, into a golden egg. In the days before product placement was noticeable in film and long before “tipping point” become part of marketing vernacular, the car that emerged from the back of a Semi trailer and into the hearts and minds of the people could hardly be more stark.
For a 10 year old boy living in suburban North London, England this film and more to the point THIS CAR, started a boyhood fascination for this stunning sleek machine. This turned into an adult journey that took 25 years to complete. The story of this can be found at: timrogersmt.com/trans-am/
Sounds a little corny but I long for these days. Things were a liitle more simple and people a little less meaner. No cell phones. No internet and we did just fine.
Nothing corny

I love Billy Bob Thornton’s quote that said something to the effect of “Growing up in the South, we didn’t think of this as a movie, we considered it to be a documentary.”
Profound stoicism for certain.
Hey Snow Man Fred isn't ugly bandit is just crazy
Hard to believe that this brilliant movie came out 45 years ago. Still a better movie than most modern day movies.
Never again son.. Reckon it's just well preserved now, in this here YT time capsule for all of time..! 🍷
Just to remind humanity, we always made it, 'cause theres just more to life after all now wasn't there.. ?

It seems impossible...considering I remember sitting in the theater as a kid watching this. Movies in the 70s were SO GOOD !!
@@onwednesdayswewearpink2761Saw this at the drive in. Still there and packing them in.
The fact that Jerry Reed wrote this iconic song in about half an hour continues to blow my mind. What a talent.
He was a musical genius and one of the best guitarist ever.
Exactly!!
Jerry Reed was very underrated as a musician and actor. .

These 2 guys were awesome together. And the scene where Reynolds looks at the camera made you feel like you were part of the run with them.
Let the party begin!!
I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@leighthompson489 I've heard Burt talk about that in an interview. He also said it's the first time it had ever been done.
I got news for you... THE WHOLE DAMN COUNTRY WAS ON THAT RUN WITH THEM!!! :)
Yep!
My Dad passed away in 1979. We went to the theater to see this movie and I can still see him laughing his ass off watching this movie. He was sitting a few rows behind me on the other side of the aisle right next to the aisle. He had a big grin and it's a memory I will always remember of him. FWIW, this movie always makes me think of him.
My dad, who passed away in 2016 took me to see the second film in the UK - I was too young to get in!! But I watched both hundreds of times on VHS. Now I own a 1979 Bandit. You may find some interest in some, or all of this. timrogersmt.com/trans-am/
RIP, to your dad, I miss mine too, I'm restoring his dodge truck in his memory
❤️
thats a great memory bro !!!
Damn - right in the feels. I was obsessed with this movie as a kid, and my dad dotingly watched our VHS copy with me, because he loved it just as much. It's one of my fondest memories of him.
I like it when Burt looks directly at the camera Lol
Its called breaking the fourth wall. I loked it too.
Yes, when it is done right I love when they break the 4th wall - and Burt had a the ability to break the wall and make it look like it really belonged there - made you feel like you were actually part of the movie.
I don't know how he did not clip that brick building jumping up off the curb. May be why he looked at the camera, like whoa that was close.....and that is a wrap.
Idiots
It's called breaking the forth wall. Mister Roper was the best at it.

That car still looks sexy today. Some things are timeless.
Those cars were works of art. RIP Pontiac
A work of art was about it since the motors were so choked up they didn't have enough power to hardly get out of its own way
You could put 2-3 beautiful babes wearing bikinis standing next to that Trans Am and i would STILL notice the car first and and would take it home with me FIRST.
@@willh1082 It was the time before electronics and computers. You're average shade tree mechanic was more than capable of ripping out the smog crap, then opening up the inhaling and exhaling and the motors came to life.
Sally was sexy!
When Burt looked at that camera, he looked right into the depth of America's soul, telling us everything would be cool, not just okay, but cool.
Yes I guess actors are taught never to look into the camera but Burt is so cool he can get away with it.
I agree with both
He was breaking the fourth wall.
That was so weird, lol.
We've lost that ability... I swear that's what's wrong with America we no longer know how to be COOL.. the Lost art of being cool 😎
Today my wife and I drove 3 hours south, and bought a BEAUTIFUL 1977 Black Trans-Am. I have wanted one ever since I saw this flick when I was a little kid…now I have one. ❤️
Not only the fact that I’m a third generation truck driver, but this movie helped solidify the fact that I’m 24 years and a few million miles between the lines.
That makes no sense. You're 24, but got millions of miles between the lines?? I call b.s
It doesn't matter how many times you watch Smokey and the Bandit it never gets old and it's still one hilarious movie
What's awesome is knowing the movie lines by heart.. lol
I was 16 when I saw this movie in the theater, watching that Trans Am roar out of that trailer made me say holy shit. 40 years later I have one in my garage , always takes me back to my youth :)
cool
DustyBalz It better be a black and gold '77 with black leather interior with t-tops or it ain't a trans am
Awesome.
There was no leather interior option. Vinyl.
Wish I had one.
When this movie came out, my dad was the body shop manager at the local Pontiac dealer. He bought my mom a T/A identical to this one. Had the AM/FM radio with built-in 40 channel CB radio. I was a kid caught up in the CB craze at the time, so this was heaven for me.
They went to see this movie at a drive in, in that car. My dad fishtailing it through the parking lot while finding a spot to watch.
Doesn't get much cooler than that, unless they had taken me along with them.
The number two box office smash of 1977 and it's about two good ol boys bootlegging Coors beer.a real classic
it was number 4 but it's behind Star Wars, Close Encounters and Saturday Night Fever. Considering it came out days after Star Wars I'd say it did pretty good for two good ol boys racing across the country.

I grew up without much money on a dirt road in Texas. But I saw the Smokey &TB movie when I was a kid and was equally obsessed. Although my parents were strict and we didn't have much, I somehow convinced them to let me spend my own life savings on an old (late 80s at the time) 1977 Trans Am. It was my dream car. The engine blew up literally the first night I drove it, but my dad helped me swap a junkyard 455 ("great" idea for a 16 year old kid to drive, right?!?). I drove it like a Duke boy, often power sliding around corners on the dusty dirt roads of Texas (not condoning that behavior, but I will say it was a blast). Still my favorite car I ever had by a mile.
Don't apologize. That's just what we all did back then. Life was fun and simple. People actually knew how to drive back then.
I hear ya buddy. I grew up in DFW area and did slides in my '73 Nova at the park in the 80s.
You should have kept it
Still a fav of mine. The 76, 77 model Trans Am is one badass motor vehicle. Up there with the General Lee.
'76 still had the two round headlight front, '77 went to the front like in the movie. However, movie production started in '76 and '77 new-front T/A's were not released at the time, so the Bandit Trnas Am's in the movie are actually '76 T/A's w/the new '77 front clip...so when the movie came out in '77, the T/A in it looked like the new one by then on dealer lots.
That was Jerry's genuine reaction to seeing the car for the first time.
It is still so hard to believe that the Bandit is gone. We sure miss you Burt... may the highways in heaven be free of smokies!
I should hope so because what if JC and family want to have a couple hundred cases of brewski delivered? I mean who's to say that they don't like Coors up there?!
And Need For Speed Unbound had 2 missions that paid tribute to this movie
Not the ones on the ground. They're still around.
I read somewhere that when they approached Jackie about doing this movie, he read a few pages of the script, said "I got this" and just made up his lines as he went along.
The greatest and most recognizable Trans Am in Pontiac history ! And my favorite car of all time
This one and Kitt
I have a friend who worked at a GM plant during the 80's. He talked with a guy who worked in the plant where the Trans Am was made. He said they made so many of those cars, the plant workers got sick of looking at them.
Mine too
The General Lee has entered the chat
Pontiac was a shitty product. That is why GM ultimately discontinued the line altogether.
One of my favourite movies of all time. Smokey and the Bandit is one of the best movies ever made.
Hard to believe 40 years has gone by since this movie came out.

Wanted that car as a kid and still want one. A timeless classic. Even Leno went nuts over it and he has the ultimate collection. I'd have a Fred too if I drove a big rig.
Fred is the reason I have a Bassett hound now
When that car fired up and rolled out the back of that truck, it was love at 1st sight for me. Had a 1977 Trans-Am SE for 9 years. Was a lovely car to drive.

Worked at a movie theatre when this came out. I can't count how many times I saw it. The Trans Am was so cool and of course Sally Field 😍
Sally Fields was a "hottie".
@@jomehi6863 Comments like these are ironic, because Burt actually had to fight for Sally Fields to be in the movies as the studio executives said she wasn't "attractive enough" to star as a leading lady.

This and Cannonball Run were two of my iconic movies in childhood. Nothing but fond memories of both. There wasn't any pretentiousness or grandstanding. No preachy message or political undertones. These kinds of movies were just fun to watch. They just don't make 'em like this anymore and that's a sad thing.
"Honey Hush" was NOT in the script. 100% improvised moment from Jerry. There was a whole lot of improvising going on in this movie! It will remain a classic forever! RIP to them all 😥
That's pretty much a rule in any Burt Reynolds movie.
Apparently 90% of Jackie Gleasons lines wasn't scripted either
What's a warthog? A biker with no broken bones?
From what Ive read that was Jerry's genuine reaction to the car because that was the first time he saw it
When he pulled that car out, that was history in it’s self. It made the movie that much better.
Rest in peace to the legendary Burt Reynolds.
And Jackie gleason jerry reed Mike Henry as Jr RIP
Thanks

Back when America was still America. Love it
Kids now days have NO IDEA what joys they are missing
You gotta love the Bandit's 'stagecoach holdup" mural on the truck. So badass!!
A guy who paints his truck like this would go to a minister's funeral dressed in feathers!
I love Jackie Gleason in this movie. He did practically whole thing ad lib. The stuff he made up as he went along was way better than the original script, so the director, just let him go with it.
“Nobody makes Sheriff Buford T. Justice look like a possum’s pecker!”
“There is no way - no way - that you could have come from my loins. First thing I’m gonna do when we get home is punch your momma in the mouth.”
They could have replaced everyone but Jackie and the movie would have been a hit.
I remember reading somewhere that one of his conditions for playing Sheriff Justice was he got to ad lib as much as he wanted. Hal Needham wasn't about to tell him no.
Ad Lib ? what's Ad Lib ?
Simply means he's winging it as they are filming, and saying what he wants as he goes along, instead of what the script says for his character to say. Improvised on the spot basically. The sign of a great actor. The official definition of "ad-lib" = speak or perform in public without previously preparing one's words
Saw it in the theater. ❤❤❤ R.I.P. to all the actors.. A true classic
That one scene of Burt driving that beautiful, shiny, sleek , fast Trans Am out of the back of that truck sold a shitload of of TA's
There will never be another movie that comes close to this. But, Jerry, Jackie and the whole cast are unreplaceable!! Hollywood can't ever reproduce anything as good as this ever again. It was a Time in America, for such heroes and we sure had some come from this movie. God rest their souls, they gave us something we will never forget.

I have this car in real life and every time I start it and take it out of the driveway I always picture myself as the bandit in this scene. This is my favorite movie ever and I know every line😂
Ill always remember that scene when Burt broke the fourth wall. Best car ever.👍
This movie is just magic, not one dull moment and it made sense. The chemistry was just happening all over the screen. You won't see this any more. The actor's don't have the talent plain and simple.
Ya modern filmmakers don’t understand that fundamentally you’re just telling a story. If it’s not a good story, the film is going to suck no matter how many millions you dump into it. Creativity left Hollywood a long time ago
To the coolest guy of my childhood. RIP Burt. I have one of those cars because of you!
Millions of American youth got CB radios in their cars because of this movie. Cell phones spoiled the fun
Snowman looks just like my father, he was a truck driver, there will never be another movie like this. I love this movie and the 🎵 song.

A lot of people don't realize that the car is actually a 1976 Trans Am with a 1977 front bumper. They had to do slight modifications to make it fit and have the body lines match up. the 1977 model wasn't on the market when filming began, so GM provided them with the front bumper - brilliant advertising.
and it worked. This movie skyrockted Trans Am sales.
The engine sounds were also dubbed in, since the factory motor didn't sound "tough" enough. The sounds were actually recorded from the '55 Chevy that Harrison Ford drove in American Graffiti (powered by a built, tunnel-rammed Chevy 427 big block).

Alonzo pulling up to the Monte Carlo in Training Day, Sonny Crockett getting his replacement Ferrari Testarossa after they blew up his Daytona, Bruce Wayne's new Batmobile in 1989's Batman and Bo Darville [aka the Bandit] introducing the world to the Bandit 1. Some of the most iconic moments in movie cars ever.
All evidence to the contrary, just the exact opposite.
I don't care who you are or where you're from.....everybody wanted to be the bandit. Just makes you want to get out and drive. So sad when your heroes die....but oh the memories. R.I.P. Bandit and the Snowman
I remember my folks taking me and my brother to see this in the theater in 1977. I was nine. It was the first real "adult" action movie they let me watch, and I just sat on the edge of my seat, saucer-eyed, for the entire show. My dad was a truck driver, and I was totally into trucks, and cars, so this movie pretty much checked all the boxes for me. Good memories.
Same here. My dad wasn't a truck driver, but I fell in ❤with that Trans Am when it first appeared. I asked my dad if we could buy one, and he looked at me in shock and said, "No! Have you got any idea how EXPENSIVE they are?" Then I asked my dad if we could get a CB radio, and he said "No, those are only toys for adults." Dad worked hard to keep the wolf from the door and was very conservative, since he grew up during the Great Depression and WW2, and I was too young and silly to appreciate that.
But I loved the movie anyway. Jackie Gleason was too funny as Sheriff Buford T. Justice. 😆
This is one of my comfort movies, I’m almost 26 and grew up in Britain but my parents did a hell of a good job parenting me when it came to movies/films between Smokey and the Bandit, Clint Eastwood’s Every Which Way films and Cannonball Run they didn’t fail me. Fun fact: my grandfather actually help make this exact car for this movie at the gm Norwood assembly line he mostly helped put on the trimming around the driver and passenger door frames that was one of the first parts to go into the car after the frame of the car got painted he also helped put in the seats which he said that was one of the hardest jobs he had to do cuz the seat weighed 60+ pounds and he had to carry it to the car by hand. He also helped wire speakers put in the door locking and opening mechanisms in the passenger and driver side door frames. But other than that he said that was awesome to work on those cars for a movie production.
