To all who criticize this prof. in some way: Try to lecture about so complex, insightful and ambitious work as is the one of Max Weber. Than I am able to listen to your arguments :)
Thanks, Alan. Allows key ideas to be shared and understood accurately in a way that only top universities could. I can say with conviction that by watching these videos I have become much more informed on matters such as Marx!
THANK YOU for posting these lectures. This will really give me and advantage as this is now assumed knowledge in Social Science at UWS! Thank you kindly (",)
The best book about Max Weber is the - for the early twentieth century - completely unique book of his wive Marianne Weber on him. It is one of the most touching books I ever read since her deep love for him is apparent on every page - very much because of the intellectual stimulus he was for her too. It has only recently been translated into English for the first time as "Max Weber: an autobiography".
14:20 "There is no real institutional underpinning order whether of caste, clan, religion or political absolutism which dominates the rest. We are free-floating individuals separated off." To prevent an unfortunate misunderstanding by viewers with less theory experience, we should clarify that dominance is not only in tension but is, importantly, unequal. To say there is no dominance incorrectly implies general equality. For example, "caste" (class) represents inequality, not just tension.
Hi, first of all, I would like to thank you for the amazing lectures. I'm a brazilian medicine student who loves to learn philosophy and sociology, and these lectures have helped me improve myself at these subjects. But the main reason I've written this comment is to give you a tip that I saw in vlogs here in Brazil: why don't you include, at the description of the video, the names of the books that you mention? It's really easier to remember to searching for them after seeing the lesson!
@MrBillcale I strongly disagree with your comment, and I am also curious to know what exactly do you base your statement on? I complement my "American" (U.S.A. actually) education with professor Macfarlane's videos.
Can't you just make it easy on us and say that, in Weber's opinion, protestant ethics necessarily gave birth to modern capitalism through embracing the value of hard labor and dedication to be preceded by heavenly reward in the afterlife.
so as where weber belived that the evoltion of capitalism was "an accident" where as Marx on the other hand had a more determisic view on the rise of the capitalistic society; he saw it as part of the inherint logic of history.
Isn't the rule of law the bottom line in a capitalist society? Weber also argues that its the state 'monopoly on violence' and all that, right? And also there is an explosion of non-stop talking as soon as he says break. whats that about?
mmmnnn.....as you are well read i wonder what your opinions are on todays politics.....i understand you may not wish your thoughts be made public...so i ask you this to think on in your own time......you seem to understand western history well enough to the point where it seems you are able to predict our political future....so.........where are we going....???
Everytime he starts to talk about something interesting the meat of the arguement is glossed over. He doesn't follow through with any details of discussions he starts. I feel the theories are so full of holes when REALLY discussed. More evidence those who cant do, TEACH.
i think the proff fails to portray the weberian concept of sociology. the neokantian roots of it, the key concept of rationality, the mutual orientation of meaning in social acts, hasty words on typology of authority - no mention of dominance & legitimization- Hearing only about protestant ethic you get a misconception about weber. Well to be fair 45 min its 2 little 4 the above themes nevertheless i think he could do a better job. on making an intro lecture on weber.
I keep having to watch these for my sociology course and the audio is always god awful. Can barely hear anything but static and whispering with my volume at 100% lol.
also this dude is a terrible speaker for taking notes. he'll be like "What the (random theory) is, is basically when the free world, the free world being (explains what the free world is then never defines the random theory mentioned)"
Thanks for uploading this superbly informative lecture on the brilliant Weber.
Thank you - much appreciated. As you see, 'publish (on RUclips) and be damned', but the grateful comments more than make up for this. Alan
Thank you!!! I am grateful
I agree..My prf taught weber in such a lovely way...I still rememeber the whole lecture

I am deeply grateful for these videos, thank you!
@richieerror

Excellent video. Thank you for the upload. Who do you refer to at the 3min mark? I can't quite make out the name.

Merci pour la vidéo.
thanks!
what was max aim at promoting equality in his theory?
What did Weber mean by Rationalization? is there more than one answer? I would sincerely appreciate an answer. Thank you very much.
Max Weber is incredible. It's a shame the modern sociology syllabus, at least pre-university, has become so milked down.
@MrBillcale: May I ask on what exactly do you base this extraordinary view?
it was a generous share
Max Weber was great!
are there any videos on weber's probability theory?
so as where weber belived that the evoltion of capitalism was "an accident" where as Marx on the other hand had a more determisic view on the rise of the capitalistic society; he saw it as part of the inherint logic of history.
why do you want it easy?
Can't stop trying think of a recipe that would need 2 ounces of salt!!
no sound?

I'm sure youve invented your own ideas and embraced them as truth, I will stick to what Weber and Calvin had to say about the subject.
40797 views and I just had some juice ...
theres no change, its all the steel cage of bureaucracy. routinization is only challenged by charisma
my only criticism, lack of emotion. Hard to hear you wise man!

@LaBrujaMona well for example here he would have been couched by someone in human resourses to SpEAK UP!!!

@asmodeus585 i cant understand your professors, they dont speak english properly, hes mumbling also
You obviously have no understanding of Weber, because he really really wasn't
judging by this the american education system is better
I htink he is jealous because his hair has fallen out and hes half dead.
That is a terrible summary of the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.
This prof mumbles and looks down too much. He needs to learn to project his voice!!
I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH YOU
overrated crap, see domination 4 part weber "wey-ber"
