Reorganizing my Bookshelves || May TBR 2024

  • Hey Booktube, for my May TBR we are doing things a little different! I will be doing a month long reading challenge focusing on the books on my bookshelves I keep forgetting about and the ones I probably should unhaul. In order to do that, I decided to reorganize all my books and place a "TBR shelf" at the top of each bookcase. They'll be numbered 1 to 7 and put in a jar. Each week I'll pick a number and vlog myself reading them and/or unhauling them!

    I love your bookshelves because all your books look read and loved - sometimes it seems like book influencers buy a bunch of special editions to make their shelves beautiful but never actually read those books which makes me a bit sad. It’s a different hobby I guess to decorate a shelf, valid in its own right but not for everyone :)

    You can’t put The Housemaid in the excited to read pile after saying you hate domestic thrillers because that book is the DEFINITION of a generic domestic thriller that would’ve been published in 2016. Beyond the plot twist being super predictable… it really isn’t well written. If you do get the mystery/thriller shelf then just read that first and get it off your tbr, I know for a fact that you will not end up giving it anything more than a 3 star.

    It's not because the shelves look "disastrous". That's character 😂 it's because you've been adding to your collection for a good while and at this point it's OUR collection and it'd be satisfying to see how it looks when every piece of the puzzle falls into place 😅

    • @BookswithEmilyFox

    • @DragonHeart29
      @DragonHeart29 4 месяца назад +12

      @@BookswithEmilyFox I think most people can only keep one "esthetically pleasing" corner. If your collection is constantly changing, you'd have to sacrifice either functionality or esthetics. I think finding the courage to declutter not only what you don't like but also what you'd never read again might give you room to play with the esthetics.

    • @BookswithEmilyFox

    I spy Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour Bookshop with the cool glow in the dark cover!!! I 100% picked up & read that book because of the cover, 😂. I need a section of my bookshelf that is just "cool covers, ignore the inside".

      That cover is everything! Is it not good?

    • @Beach652
      @Beach652 4 месяца назад

      @@BookswithEmilyFox my comment was harsh - it wasn't bad at all, just didn't blow me away like the cover design did. It felt a bit like someone had a good visual for a weird mysterious bookstore and tried to build a plot around it, to mixed success (for me). I didn't mind it though. :)

    • @mariyamak
      @mariyamak 4 месяца назад

      @@BookswithEmilyFox I also bought it because I saw someone show the cool cover on RUclips (it IS cool). I REALLY liked it. It's kind of a low-key and low-stakes mystery and I liked the magical realism mixed in with in-depth descriptions of the food available to Google's employees. There is a manic pixie dream girl but the romance was barely a plot point.

  • @jamiebbooks
    @jamiebbooks 4 месяца назад

    If you put some vases, stuffed animals, or whatever shelf decor you like on your shelves in the gaps, that might help make the shelves look pretty without losing the functionality of your organization idea. I usually use large vases or pottery since a large heavy thing also works as a bookend and is easier to move than a bunch of small things when you are accessing books on the shelf.

    For Jo Nesbo - there are 5 books between The Bat and The Snowman. Would suggest you try The Bat and, if not sure, then Cockroaches and Redbreast. It's one of my favorite series and I think Redbreast is the best of the series. Both The Bat and The Snowman were just pretty good. The whole series is definitely starring a male protagonist written by a man, but like a woke Scandinavian man, so it's a lot of male energy but not misogynist (in my view).

    I genuinely think you'll hate The Belgariad by David Eddings - the writing is stiff and dry, the plot is cookie cutter, and something extremely upsetting happens towards the end of the book... Feel free to ask what it is

      Is that a bind-up of the whole series (5 books)? I read that years ago. I agree. I don't think you'll like it. Just read a bit to say you looked at it, and then put it in the un-haul shelf.
      Name spoilers:
      What thing happens? Is it at the end of book 1, or the end of the whole series? Personally, Ce'Nedra made me want to scream. Also, I'm thinking that Taiba's whole existence as a character will annoy the crap out of Emily.

    A warning for The strange and beautiful sorrows of Ava Lavender, it contains rape. And I would consider it pedophilia, but it probably depend on the person. I personally did not like the book, it left me confused and a bit unhappy.

    I really don't think you are going to like Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. As a person, I've heard some bad things about the way he treats the people he works with and his opinion about fantasy authors/fans. The books are also a lot of SA and pain for no reason. His depiction of women in the series... Yeah, I just don't think you are going to like his work. If you are interested in learning more about him as an author or his books in general, Daniel Greene did a video about him that I think is pretty comprehensive.
    Disclaimer: I read his books when I was 17-20 age range. They were my first experience with older/darker fantasy. This series reinforced some pretty toxic beliefs I had about women and how they derive their value. The concept around the wizard's rules were interesting, but the delivery impacted my mental health for a long time. I stopped reading the series before it finished and as a completionist this was really difficult.

    I'm pretty sure I read John Dies At The End back when I was a teenager. If it's the book I think it is, it was _extremely_ weird in a "far too many hallucinogenic drugs were consumed by the author while this was being written" kind of way. I can't actually remember how it ends or much of the plot because I had so much difficulty understanding it. Not sure if that was due to being a teen with minimal life experience or due to how deliberately disjointed and confusing the story was though. I never reread it as an adult.
