Ali, will you promise to bring Yui back to the Philippines after covid? I see most of your video were taken inside your place and still enjoy watching it. Maybe next video outside your place?
“Every Filipino is half-Spanish”- not true; although most, probably, claim to be. Many Filipinos adopted (or were forced to adopt) the Spanish surnames of their Spanish conquistadores. A Spanish-sounding family name is never a DNA test result that says you have Spanish blood in you.
Right!? Filipinos LOVE to claim they’re mixed Spanish just because of their Spanish surname. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth as despite being under Spanish colonization for over 300 years, there just wasn’t a huge enough number of Spanish migration to the Philippines during the colonization period. The Spaniards sent mostly people from their, then, New capital - Mexico City. Thousands of Mexicans were sent to the Philippines each year as laborers, soldiers, etc., while only a few “pure” Spanish (less than 1,000) migrated to the Philippines; due to the great distance between Spain and The Philippines, many Spaniards preferred to instead migrate to other Spanish colonies closer to Spain. Majority of the population are still primarily Austronesian. An average or typical Filipino will have significantly more percentage of Chinese ancestry than Spanish ancestry, if at all. Fact of the matter is, majority have little to zero trace of European ancestry and it’s evident in their physical appearance. Unlike in most of Latin America where traces of European ancestry is clearly visible in the populations which is evidence of years of CONTINUOUS mixing between the indigenous people and Spaniards. That didn’t happen much with Filipinos and eventually those with European ancestry have diminished more and more. Today, there’s hardly any Filipino that exist now with a significant percentage of European ancestry from the colonial times. Also the reason for Filipinos having Spanish surname was a result of the Claveria Decree (ordered by the Spanish governor general at that time) in which Filipinos, by law, were to adopt a Spanish surname, mainly for tax registration purposes. Although of course, intermarriages did happen as well, it wasn’t as common as Filipinos would like to believe, given that the Spaniards looked down on Filipinos. It was more common to rape than to marry a Filipino. It’s such a sad fact that many Filipinos, still today, don’t know much about their own history. Instead, they easily accept and romanticize the idea that they could be partially European as the reason for their Spanish surname. Filipinos equate having Spanish or American ancestry as being superior and “beautiful.” That you’re “special.” So they push the idea that many, if not all, Filipinos have Spanish ancestry - I guess to feel better about themselves. An inferior complex brought on by years of Western colonization. Very sad. The funny thing is, majority of Filipinos look like a typical Southeast or East Asian person so when a Filipino makes a claim that ALL or MOST of us are part Spanish, it only serves to make us look bad to foreigners, like we’re all just a bunch of wannabe European. It’s honestly embarrassing.
The Philippine mainstream media has this ridiculous obsession with foreign countries and foreigners (especially light skin westerners) which is why you will almost never see any celebrities thats not half something, unless they are insanely gorgeous or talented. Back in the day, all the light skin "doñas" are mostly half spanish who think theyre better than everyone else, and they look down on "morenas", which are the darker filipinos. Thats why so many people have so many mixes. Its almost like they make it their mission to be as tainted and mixed as possible, because they think thats whats gonna get them ahead in life. Im not sure if its still as bad today..
