Appreciate what you do teach maybe these videos will keep this craft going allot long than any of us know I’m 32 and never been around any of this stuff in my life closest I have been to a machine shop is dropping of cylinder heads or crankshafts but lately I’ve been needing more precise and smaller work that the typical machine shop won’t touch so I’ve decided to learn it myself so thank you and the other RUclips machinist for the videos

@14:16 Yes sir!! When I took Machine Tool in college, I made a replacement hood ornament for my 1976 Ford LTD (the Banana Boat). It was based off a Browning machine gun, antiaircraft sight. I had a hoot making it, and it was pretty solid. Amazing that those actors did projects, our current crop seems to only do drugs.... Thanks Professor! I had a great time, even in detention.
I stayed for detention, but there was something actually interesting to learn... I thought detention was suppose to suck? LOL.
And here I am again in 2021 watching another interesting video. Also watched that test track loop beside the big Interstate. Love that beautiful South Bend shaper and appreciate all the work that went into it. My family owned a 1941 Silver Streak, straight eight Pontiac with a neat Indian Head hood ornament.
Loved the whole thing even detention those hood ornaments and radiator caps with the temperature guages in them brought back a lot of fond memories.
I have watched every one of your videos; some 2 or 3 times. Now at 85 years and health limitations that limit my travel, I fully enjoy your travel videos where you allow me to accompany you on your excursions to interesting places. I particularly enjoyed the trip to the Car Museum and now the hood ornament display. Many thanks for your teachable and enjoyable videos.

My Dad & I rebuilt a Ford tractor engine just like the one your buddy is rebuilding. That was like 40 years ago. We had to separate the block from the frontend & the transmission to take the block to have new sleeves installed & bored. I remembered being amazed that it was a 3 cly. Engine I had never seen one before. The tractor belonged to a lake club my Dad belonged to & as far as I know they are still cutting grass & dragging their ball diamond with it. Thanks for bringing back good memories of my Dad God rest his soul.
I got one really enjoy your videos, sir. And I was one of the 75 that watched the test road video, I found it interesting. My true hobby is model railroading, and your photos of the actors working in their shops reminded me of Rod Stewart, the musician. He has an entire floor of his home filled with one of the loveliest model railroads ever made... he used to pack trains and buildings and such to work on when he toured !!! Guess they are real people too, huh???

Well I am one of the 75 people that watched the test road video and found it interesting. We recently test drove a Toyota Highlander and I didn't get out of the parking lot before I had made a nay decision on that vehicle because of the stupid engine shut off.
Mr Pete, I am a retired engineer and find all your videos fascinating and entertaining, they are never “too long” and I hope you continue for many years to come. I come from England and only found your channel a few years ago when I bought an iPad and started watching RUclips. I have a very small workshop which I use to build small projects and to build radio controlled models. I am also a Radio Ham which has been helpful recently during the lock downs. I enjoy your “rants” very much as like you I have an old fashioned idea about job satisfaction and a pride in my work. I don’t have any time for the modern throw away society and take great pleasure in fixing things for my friends and neighbours. I am lucky to be living in the West Country now, specifically a town called Paignton, near Torquay in Devon, but I grew up near London, did an apprenticeship and have found it impossible to give up my interests in “making things”. Sadly my Health is failing now and I have lost the sight in my left eye, become deaf and now use a wheelchair a lot but that does not stop me from doing things and more importantly watching your channel. Detention made me feel right at home. It only lacked a swat from the paddle I made as a gift for my 8th grade science teacher as I headed off to high school. I would never had guessed he would be the high school principal the following year and use my paddle on me!
The pictures of the actors working on their projects was interesting. Always liked the Pierce Arrow ornament. Definitely art.
I was that kid who skipped study hall, lunch, pe, before school, Shop classes, metal, wood, electricity, and drafting were the classes I really enjoyed and most benefited from in life. Thanks to all who made it possible.

My Dads model A had a “mono meter” that showed coolant temp, I also recall a dove in semi-spread wing . Both popular ....... thanks Mr Pete, though I’m only 70 I recall Dad muttering about “ planting too close to the road” and “ who’s gonna buy all these cars “ “cheap Japanese junk” etc. Great video, I’ll ck out Gillmore next time I go home to Lenawee Co Mi.

If I'm a bad boy, spank me. I hate it when I'm forced to watch things I enjoy. I watch all your videos despite the fact I was a welder. I did run P&J turret lathe about 6 months once and hated it. My training was, here's the start button and here's the stop, and that was about it. Didn't much care for those hot chips either. I then spent the next 33 years welding with uncountable burn scars as proof of my welding career. Ponder that one. I think this video was one of the best. I was thoroughly edutainned. Happy New Year.

That's right. I've never watched a video by Mr Pete and thought "Boy, that was too long". On the contrary, they are over too quickly. Mr Pete, come on, your audience needs more: anything less than an hour is so disappointing.
Hey Mr Pete, I love some of the old hood ornaments. I'm 66 and I believe that they gave the old cars character and some really had a lot of detail including hair. Some were very beautiful and showed so much detail. Now-a-days I can't even tell the difference between domestic and imports at a distance and up close with some. I use to be able to tell you the make, model, and year from a block away - where now they all look the same - Sometimes progress sucks, where people don't care about details and everything is made of plastic - later

You are the shop teacher I needed, but we had no shop teaching of anything in our middle eastern high schools, and I went to a prestigious private school. All theory and no touchy touch anything until you got to university.
I did manage to learn machining back in 2000 at the age of 40, using cheap Chinese Mill and lathe. Which I quickly converted to CNC, due to lack of skill as a machinist.
But, I got my hands on these machines and did my time, to learn what I wanted to learn most my life, but couldn't for one reason or another.
I don't make anything anymore, because its all "been there, done that" by now.
However, I watch only technical videos. Mostly electronics related, but you, AvE, TOT, and a few more, are in my sub list.
Your rants comfort me. It's nice to hear sane man talk for a change. I find most people do stupid things and don't thing of the results or the endgame.
Humanity is getting dumber as I get older! I thought it was supposed to be the other way around!!

In high school I spent so much time in detention I thought it was normal . The biggest joke was when the boys dean realized that there wasn’t enough time left in the school year for me to serve it all. They sent me out to the bus garage and let me help change an engine in one of the bus’s for the rest of my time . A win for both of us ! 😉 ! Wouldn’t see that happen nowadays !
Mr Pete you have me by some years but somehow your rants seem to fit right in with my thinking. I have to confess I did not watch the test road video but have total agreement about cars shutting off in traffic. Let them get some age and abuse and let's see how many stranded people, and accidents we can create.

Mr Pete, I just bought, a new to me, 2018 Toyota PK truck. I saw your video about the automatic engine cut off. I made sure there was not one on my new truck. Thanks for the information and a heads up. I enjoyed your comments and the video of the road test track. Very interesting information. The truck was made in Texas. Took the edge off buying a foreign vehicle. ThankYou for everything.
The hood ornaments were amazing. Might sound like a broken record but I do miss that sort of thing. That was a different world.

Love the mascots! They truly are pieces of art and much underappreciated by most, thanks for sharing that.
I like the mascots. They have many that I have never seen. I find it interesting how at one time men had projects to fill there free time. Today most people don't do a damn thing! When I was a young boy I enjoyed looking at popular mechanics, I built projects on my own and fixed and built things with my father. As an adult I love working in my shop. I restore tools, cars, and build furniture. I have very few friends who pursue similar past times. I guess they're too busy watching sports on TV and playing video games. By the way when I was in high school I spent a bunch of extra time in the wood shop. We did not have a machine shop. However my father was a machinist and taught me a few things. And of course I became a shop teacher.

I have an old Cincinnati treadle lathe that was converted many moons ago to accept an electric motor.I enjoy playing on the old machine.I wish I could turn back time to enter into one of your shop classes.Thank you so much.

Hey Pete making you proud here in Delaware,, I'm buying up all the good atlas lathes I can find at a good price as it is climbing,,, have 6 now,,,3-618s,,,,2- 12 x 36s and a 109,,,one 618 has never been used,,, gotten all kinds of tools and tooling,,, have milling attachments and steady and follower rests for both the 6 and 12 inch.. I can slide a caliper and micrometer down all the lathes and measures the same and dail indicator needle dosent move on the spindles,,, hard to find that in other lathes,,,atlas was surely for the hobbyist and most taken care of,, as for the zmak gears I only have 2 gears out of 6 lathes with any wear,,both my 12s have quick change gear boxes and was happy to find the gears in fact at all steel in them. You have taught me well.
May 2021 be a great year for our favorite shop teacher!!

I just got a knee mill in Dec, I also recently got a Hardinge HLV lathe. I will be picking up a DoAll surface grinder in a few day as well. I plan on going back and making a few of your projects. My shop is finally coming together. Love your videos. Thanks Mr Pete.

Mr. Pete; I absolutely love watching your videos. I didn't get a notification for your AASHO Test Road video. I'm planning to watch it after this one ends.
It's hard to think about you feeling as if nobody watches your videos. I completely understand the feeling, though. The way I keep from feeling bad when some of my videos get few views, is to think about how my life goes and why sometimes I go through spells where I don't watch many videos.
For instance, I went to Korea to a job site for 3.5 months and was under pressure to work 12 hour days and deal with major stress. All I wanted to do was rest when I got back to the hotel. I didn't watch videos. During that time, I'm sure many videos were published that I missed.
Your This and That videos NEVER get too long! Please keep them coming. Hope you get some thought-provoking questions on your new proposed video series, as well!

And by the way, my car has a stand-up hood ornament, being from 1984. It's just to commemorate the 84 Summer Olympics, and nothing like the mascots in the museum! My friends always say if my car was an Olympic athlete, it would be disqualified for "use of performance enhancing substances." They say that since I installed a turbocharged engine in it in place of an anemic 100 HP boat anchor; more than quadrupling the horsepower!

Mr. Pete I used a micrometer as a "C" clamp, you had better put me in detention again. Because if that's detention, I truly enjoyed it. I'm a huge old car enthusiast and through many of your video's have taken on sand casting. I'm going to send you an email to show a few castings I've made from patterns I carved. Thanks for everything you do, your impact in the "fading trades" is far greater than you suspect.
When I was in HS, my electricity shop teacher gave students a choice for detention. either serve the time, or take three wacks in the hind end with a 2 x 4 paddle. That was 1966 when parents wouldn't sue the heck out of schools/teachers when their precious child was disciplined. My how things have changed...I think for the worse. I sure wish I had more detentions like yours.
Banning corporal punishment and "manhandling" in schools was simply the right thing to do- way too many teachers abused children under color of "authority" and caused far more trauma than victimless crimes like talking in line or horsing around- things that kids are wont to do.

There are no consequences for actions now. Today's youth, for the most part, have no imagination beyond what is gifted to them by electronic media.

Your mention of Roy Rogers took me back mant years to when I worked in a steel works we had a 'bar inspector' on our shift a Canadian who during our breaks would tell us about his adventures with Roy Rogers and we would take the pee out of him, one night he turned up dressed as a cowboy all in black two 45's strapped on him he kicked open the door shot two rounds into the tea caddy for good luck boy were we amazed the following night he dragged in an old projector and ran some film of him. Roy,Dale and even Trigger we didn't take the pee any more !

Mr. Pete, I'm with you 100% on the autostop feature. i have a GMC Denali and when I forget to disable it and it shuts off when I stop, I'm furious! I told my dealer if I wanted that feature, I'd have bought a golf cart. As if there's anything he can do about it. Government control is only going to get worse.

Happy start of the new year to you sir! I like brake cleaner as well, but find it difficult spending $4-6 a can! I got me a sure shot sprayer to fill with liquid brake cleaner and then pressurize the the can and cheap brake cleaner 😇 or whatever liquid that’s normally in aerosol form.

I was the welding mode student while Mr. Livermore commented and the class watched live tutorial.
That's how i make my living now...contract millwright that builds stuff, that moves stuff from here to there, raw natural resources made into saleable material from dirt to final run.
Grain, wood,fertilizer, dog food, peat moss shale, fluids...
Here to there...thats all it boils down to.how ?

Hi Mr. Pete. I too have a Rav4, here in the UK. I have put a notice above my steering wheel, to turn off the stop /start. I have made it a habit to turn it off every time I get in the car. When my car wast 3.5 years old, the battery was replaced under warrenty. Would have cost £500 UK.
The battery failed because the previous owner used the stop/srart technology and the battery lasted only 3. 5 years from new. My RAV is 2014 abs I'm the second owner

Really liked the look at all the ornaments, some classics in there, your ram looks great too, shame it isn't made of metal.
I had a photography teacher that would have us listen to Zig Ziglar tapes as a class punishment when the collective class did something wrong. While I didn’t appreciate it at the time, a suppose it did instill some value later in life. I ended up reading his autobiography a few years ago and really enjoyed it.
I have read his book, and listen to many of his tapes

Yep. I was a bad boy in school from 6th grade up until I dropped out in 11th grade and went to a trade school in auto mechanics. I never got a job as an auto mechanic but I still use the skills for myself.

I'm not exactly sure what I did to end up in detention but I can tell you it is a first for me. I never thought detention included such interesting video clips. But I will certainly be back and act like a human being from now on. Great video. I need to go back to that highway video, I watched it all the way through and honestly didn't pick up on something about cars that shut off when the brake is applied. Must be my hearing loss, perhaps that is what got me in detention, grin...
