As someone who was a junior officer in the military ( so just a guess) , Rusdia is establishing a buffer zone. Then here is no rush to do anything as the ball is in Ukraine’s court. The Ukraine response will telegraph what strength, if any, they have. Rusdia has no desire to take Karkov with force but is expecting to march into thr city largely unopposed. The pattern will repeat in Odessa.

Seeing how, according to western media, the Russians have lost about a third of the nation, and they've lost about 50,000 tanks, they have no missiles left and they're using shovels and washing machines, the Russians are doing pretty good, considering they're fighting the ultra motivated NATO trained Ukrainian super soldier and the game changing western weapons. Reminds me of the old Joe Walsh song, Living a Life of Illusion.
I understand they are losing 1000 tanks daily. So that means Russia is able to either produce as many tanks as they lose per day, or they are respawning at the nearest spawn point.

I think this operation has 2 purpose, 1 is to create a breathing space against the drone attacks in country. 2 is to divert and spread out the resource allocation away from the south. Ukraine ammunition and manpower is already strained enough to just hold.
I think they are trying to divert supplies and manpower to the north to allow the Southern group to build up momentum.
This way the ukranians will have to expend a large amount of manpower and supplies stopping the Southern forces advance... which would allow the northern forces to begin another incursion
The tactic would be to ping pong the reseveres and supplies across the fronts to not only weaken ukraine but to break the morale of the soldiers who would have to be moved across

The Russians, with the firepower they can concentrate on a square mile (or 2.or 3 ?) should not be stopped by any defensive line not under a mountain. So far, they are not concentrating full firepower on breakthrough points. Due to the huge overall length of the front. If they use Tu 160s (?) with FAB bombs, like the Americans used B2s, they can break through wherever they want to.

Russia is spreading them out. I think once Russia gets past the defenses that were built in the 2014 time frame, they will move fairly quickly on those fronts, too.

Very possibly! Avdiivka, Bakhmut and surrounding hamlets and villages were well fortified with entranched defense! That was the main reason why it took so long for the Russians to overrun them. There a few more trench lines and minefields in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, but beyond that is fairly an easy task for the Russian forces to advance swiftly.

I think there is also a notable point that can be observed on the map. WeebUnion actually uses a map showing the fortifications. In the Barkmut region, everything is very fortified while in the north, there are very few fortifications. This may explain the slow progress on one side and the rapidity on the other. But if we take the Chasiv Yar area and look to the west of it, we see that there is no more fortification than there is to the north. And so, logically, if the Russians push beyond Chasiv Yar, they will be able to advance as quickly as they are currently advancing to the north.
Could be there's less information on the fortifications up there too, but you're likely correct.

Vovchansk to both Shevsenkove and Kupyansk is about 60 miles.... To encircle Karkhov another thrust west of that central advance down the M20 road going toward Karkhov seems clear enough.
West of Donetsk City Russia appears to be advancing toward Pokrovsk on a frontage 20 miles wide!

You should consider that this isn't only a war, think about the political result, solutions for the Ukraine's destiny and in general political strategy...
Russia is trying to solve all of them at the same time, without enforcing a crushing force thru the whole theater, and without burning the whole world. Also, balancing and controlling the reactions while still trying to create a legal Ukranian government to solve the whole puzzle without any possible Western, USA Intervention...
Otherwise, it is a few days operation, Russia can run over the whole area like a bulldozer...
