DIY Sofa Table

- My husband always rests his coffee cup on the arm of the sofa...just begging for it to be knocked over. Since leaning forward to set his cup on our large living room coffee table just seemed to be too much work, I decided to make him his very own sofa arm table, and I'm so glad I did! This coffee table is so convenient, and it's easy and affordable to build!

DIY COFFEE TABLE
- The first thing we’re going to do is cut our pieces for the frame. You’ll need 4@7”, 4@9” and my middle pieces were 24” but you’re may be different depending on the height of the arm on your sofa.
- Once we’ve got them cut, give the edges a good sand.
- To make it so that we can’t see any screws in our finished project, I’m using a pocket hole jig. I’m putting 2 holes in each 7” piece. Put your first hole on any side you want and then on two of your pieces, put your second hole on the side to the left on the opposite end, and for the remaining two pieces, but your second hole on the opposite end on the side to the right.
- Now you can screw your frame together using 3” screws. First I assembled the squares that go on either end and then attached the middle pieces.
- I predrilled my holes to prevent splitting and pre-sunk my screws to make assembly a little but easier.
- Next I cut a strip of ¼ plywood and a piece of ½” plywood to fit the outside of my frame.
- I drew my design on the piece of ½ inch and cut it out with my scrollsaw
- Next I glued and nailed down my ¼ sheet, with some finishing nails. Watch for rouge nails and maybe put some safety glasses on??
- If you survive that, glue down your ¼” sheet, weight it down, and let ot dry/. I left mine overnight
- This next part is really crucial. Because we had three layers that are visible from the side, we want to give it a really good sand! We don’t want to be able to see the seams once it’s painted. I used an orbital sander with 120 grit pads.
- You can add some wood filler to any cracks to make it perfect and then give it one more good sand.
- Once you’ve got it smooth as a baby’s bottom, it’s time to paint. Make sure you get in all the nooks and crannies and give it a couple coats. I used a roller where I could to give it a nicer finish.
- Last but not least, its time for the top. I used a 1x12” and cut off a 10” length. I sanded the edges, stained it, and then glued and clamped it in place.
- I gave it a quick coat of varathane to finish it off!
LOL! Your face when the nail flew off was priceless! I have been thinking about making some cause I am the one with the coffee. Now I know how to make one! TFS!
lol right??!! i couldn't stop laughing afterwards when i watched it 😂😂😂 and you need to make one before your ruin your couch!!! my husband uses ours all the time now :D
The 70s porno music was a bit off putting. Not sure why people destroy good video content with that noise.
your eyes when the nail flew away, lovely!
What color stain did you use for the top?
Early American by minwax
I absolutely love how this hugs the side of your couch and matches the style of your kitchen island!! It soo functional and saves soo much space🧡🧡🧡
thanks cass! it's definitely a space saver for sure!
I thought it was tea time.. Why we talking coffee?
Your expressions are entertaining LOL. Tip for nails; use beak nose pliers to hold.
brilliant tip!! thanks!! and you're right... anywhere it says coffee table just replace with tea table!! hehe
Lovely coffee table. Enjoyed your expressions too.
Very cute! I love the x design you added to tie into your island! 💕💕💕
thanks girl!
*Aqui, também tem sempre chá, 🤗*
I love it
Looks pretty nice with design on the side. I think that it might not be too strong though
thank youu! its strong enough for what its being used for.. its pretty sturdy when it's free-standing, and when it's stabilized by the couch, it's definitely strong enough to hold a cup of joe!💪💪😋
Du bist so cool. Du machst es gut. Wir haben lange über deine🧡 Augen gelacht. Ist dein Dach durchgesickert?
hi can i use 1"×2" lumber for the frame?
I think the 1x2 should work, just make sure you use glue to hold your joints together and finishing nails. Did you already build it ?
Nail flies 1000 mph - natural response is to open eyes, Wider?? Maybe some eye protection to match those ear defenders and dust mask 👍
lol perhaps that would be a good idea :P
Eres genial ..muy buena tu idea te felicito👍👍🙋🙋
