Very smart, practical guy. Putting Chicago Botanical Garden on my bucket list. Thanks, Jim, for continuing to expose us to great gardens and professionals!
Thank you for doing this tour! I greatly enjoyed it. CBG is what made me change my major in college from political science/Arabic to horticulture and the work of Richard Hawke and his colleague Jim Ault are who got me into plant breeding and trial evaluations. Chicago Botanic was my first real job in horticulture and changed my life. I'm deeply grateful for my time there. Thank you for sharing this wonderful institution with your audience.
Thank you so much for all these wonderful tours and especially interviews with these specialists in the plant world! I am planning my first visit to Chicago Botanical and Morton Arboretum in a couple weeks. Your tours gave me the nudge to go. Love your videos!! Even though I am here in zone 5b Michigan I still learn a lot from you and get so much enjoyment as well seeing your beautiful garden.
I purchased a membership for my family and spent about half the day in the vast gardens today. I have been to a TON of botanic gardens, arboretums, etc, through north america and europe, and this place is exceptional. The variety, size, and programming is just staggering. I can not fathom the work that goes into this place. I know they have a lot of volunteers, but wow. So much work.
Thank you to Richard & the Chicago Botanical Garden for sharing their time, knowledge and inspiration. What a beautiful garden to wander thru !!!! If I'm ever up that way I'll be sure to stop by for a visit !!!!
I found this visit especially intriguing, not sure why. It could be bc Richard is so laid back but so proud of the work being done and eager to share the knowledge with everyone. Thanks again, Jim... you're so eager to share your discoveries too! Appreciate you.
Even though I have lived in Northern Illinois for 32 years, I have never visited the Chicago Botanic Garden! I will definitely make it happen this Summer still, I just have to. Thanks for sharing your travel videos!
Thank you so much for touring the CBG Jim Putnam! Honestly this video has me in tears…my family is in the process of relocating from the Chicago suburbs to Dallas, TX and what am I going to miss the most? It’s not my midwestern roots or my wonderful garden…it’s the Chicago Botanic Garden!!! This is a magical place and seeing your tour, including the plant evaluation gardens, has me in a mess…thank you for creating something I will most definitely refer to when I’m feeling homesick.
Another spectacular gardening venue and another amazing plant master. Thanks for taking us along to these great places and talking with the folks who know these places best.
Thanks so much for sharing your visits to different gardens. It’s educational and the video of flowers, trees etc. is beautiful. Would love to see some out west, start driving! Lol.
My first trip to CBG was in 1983 on a mission from the then NC State Arboretum and for my own Master's research. I was immediately shocked by their vast acreage, expensive and expansive greenhouse complex, quality of staff, ambition to be the best, and budget. My old, tattered backpack was raining soil fragments all over the plane, the taxi, rental car, and everywhere I went. With some relief, I dropped it on the propagation bench in front of the staff and unloaded about 30 little and rare plants that Dr. JC Raulston has carefully chosen for their new garden. They were thrilled, especially with the rare Veronica gentianoides 'Variegata' that almost nobody had at the time.
Hi Ram, how are you doing? I thought of you last week......my husband and I took a day trip to Blowing Rock, NC. It's in the mountains, two hours from my house. Have you been? It was ablaze with annual and perennial color. Also, the hydrangeas were in full bloom. Plus, like you, they use lots of green textures in their gardening. It was stunning. Given the mountain temps, their landscapes do not struggle with heat like ours do. Just wanted to check in and say hello. ~ Susan
@@susanbaker2796 hollo, so grad to hare from you. No we have not been there. Thank you for sharing that. We are doing some cleaning up in the garden . I wish I could text you some pictures. Yes, I too learn a lot from Jim. I also learn a lot from you. I think there is one more video from your property Jim has left to post on his channel? Garden clean-up is a lot of work but I know if Dr. Armitage is coming, you want your garden to look extra beautiful. So nice to hear from you. Have a great week Ram.
@@susanbaker2796 hollo Susan, excharvery this summer we are cleaning out some branches .Dr A didn't mind that. I still have some anunus I have not planted yet 😅. I think Jim putnam had 2 more videos from the garden. Hope your radiation sarcifull. Have a great summer.
Loved this! I’ve been to the Chicago Botanic Garden a number of times, so it was lovely to see some familiar vistas, but it was especially interesting to hear about their trialing process.
Nice one Mr. Putnam👍. I often look up and save copies of Hawke's/CBGs trials when I'm trying to pick a cultivar of a plant for a garden. What's the best of... the most tolerant of...the most floriferous....least disease affected...and so on. Their observations are often so helpful when building a garden. Thanks for this interview. Next...? Nybg...Mbot... maybe?
really really enjoyed this very informative and enjoyable video. Your guest was very well spoken and really gave us some great info. Thank you Jim and Steph
I lived in the Chicago area for 9 years and never went to this place (wasn't into plants had not found Horttube yet lol). Thank you for sharing it with us. Lovely place.
Lucky Jim and Stephany, getting to visit these amazing gardens. Lucky us that you are sharing them with us. My bucket list is to visit all 50 states via a chauffeured luxury bus and visit all the beautiful gardens (and noteworthy sites) in each state; gotta win the lottery first. Until then, I’ll just watch your videos over and over again. 💚
Even recommended by Joey Santoro! When I was an agriculture major during my high school years in N. Illinois, I was farm focused. Fields of animal feed fertilized with a manure spreader didn't lead to ornamentals & I shifted to medicine. It wasn't until I graduated & moved to N. Georgia that I rekindled my love of growing things so I never toured the CBG. Thanks for showing me what I missed, I was busy stacking hay bales! Just a beautiful place & very important for gardeners & the industry.
Thank you for sharing this, Jim. I think there are a lot of people unaware of the hard work they put in here/ I am particularly impressed with the betony they introduced called PInk Cotton Candy. It is such a great plant! Love their reports too, but note, in 4 or 5 years - many of the plants that are tested may no longer be readily available .... This is particularly the case for the monarda and the heuchera...
Such a great video! I visited the Chicago Botanic Garden back in 2018. It's absolutely one of my favourites and this video has me itching to go back! I think every gardener should seek out trial gardens, both local and when traveling. They are a treasure trove of information and discovery🙂
I just moved from the Chicago area to zone 8B. I used to visit the Chicago Botanical Gardens often. There is always something there for everyone to learn and enjoy. I recently watched your Q&A wherein you answered the question about why you do not have any Crape Myrtles on your property. I had to chuckle when he mentioned that they are experimenting with a new Crape Myrtle that should survive and thrive in zone 5b. You just can't escape those Crape Myrtles. 😁
@@HandcraftedintheFoothills I never did either. However, I would get my hands on as much shredded leaves as I could and I used that together with shredded cedar mulch. I really think the leaves made a difference. If you recall, the speaker from the Botanical Gardens mentioned that they also use leaves. You were fortunate to have had good black dirt. Makes such a difference.
I love that circular portion of the gardens! ❤️ We used to have a green roof when I was still working, at UNC-Study Abroad building. The bodies of water there make for great natural water features!

Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Is there a link to Richard Hawke's testing results? I looked on the Chicago Botanical Garden site and didn't see anything about it.
Loved the tour a helpful and inspirational. ❤️ thanks to Stephanies wandering eye I saw how I want to decorate the posts for my hoselinks hubby made them tall for me so I could do that and put bird houses or whatever on top. Thanks guys 😍
Richard Hawke is surprised that so many of us read the reports developed at the Chicago Botanic Garden? It is simple as this - if a plant can survive a Chicago winter (anda Chicago hot humid summer), it can thrive in many if not most places in the US.
I've seen well rated plants from these trials that are just not available commercially. I understand that large nurseries may not be able to justify producing some of these because of production difficulties, but these sorts of plants would be great for smaller independent nurseries that are better able to specialize in less main stream plants. Does the Chicago Botanic Garden ever make plant material available to nurseries so they can start growing and propagating otherwise unavailable plants?
Thank you very much Jim and Stephanie for another wonderful garden tour 👍👍👍
