  • Experts say limits on gambling advertising are needed after a study revealed sports viewers were exposed to nearly three gambling messages a minute for online betting companies such as FanDuel. CBC’s Marketplace teamed up with researchers to measure the scale of online gambling advertisements in Canada and found that over seven sports broadcasts, viewers were exposed to gambling messages, including commercials, logos and sponsored segments for 20 per cent of the viewing time. Researchers and addiction counsellors call the advertising 'inescapable' and say regulators need to do more to protect children and those vulnerable to addiction.

Just a reminder to anyone who is considering gambling: the sportsbooks limit players that win consistently and let players that lose bet basically whatever they want. They are in the business of taking your money, not in the business of letting you get lucky.

Thank you Marketplace for bringing this to light. Gambling affects so many people across our country and destroys lives - not only of the person addicted, but their friends', families' and others' as well. It's an invisible curse that affects all too many. Gambling ads should restricted in number and regulated to adults only.

Here in Australia once gambling was let loose on sporting events they went all in & it's very much inescapable. Ironically, in the 80s with rugby league they used to have tabacco sponsorship (Even the trophy was named after a cigarette brand "Winfield"). Alcohol branding/ads was also involved. It took along time to get them out & now gambling has come along & filled the void.

It makes me laugh. The NBA wouldn't allow expansion into Canada unless NBA games were dropped from Proline gambling. Now the Raptors/NBA seem to allow the biggest advertising for gambling. My personal issue is the amount of advertisement on social media platforms. No one forced you to smoke that first cigarette just like no one forced you to bet above your limit. The only difference is Cigarette manufacturers didn't give you incentives to continue (unless you count nicotine amount). They both know it's addictive to most and hide behind regulations to deny any responsibility.

As someone who use to work in the slot machine industry I will say, those sounds, colours and lights were developed to attract you visually. Wins are random and aren’t time based. Your brain tricks you into thinking otherwise.
Gambling sites have enough revenue to pay whatever is being asked of them for advertising. Just as we have found a way to bombarded viewers with advertising using computer imposed realtime images and videos (nhl games with those annoying advertising on the boards) maybe it’s time to have those same channels dedicated solely for viewers that show no gambling or alcohol related advertising.

Online gambling is complete BS. The play Alberta wager requirements are garbage. I do gamble a few times per year, only in the casino and enjoy some free drinks as well. I do goto Las Vegas, they give us "comps" (complimentary rooms, buffet, meals, shows, etc) from our gambling, but also for what we spend on the MGM resorts in general. When in a casino, you bet with cash. I've never used a casino ATM (fees are tremendously high). Leave your credit and debit cards at home/in the room. Once the cash is gone, I am done gaming. Take a budget, stick to it, walk away when it's gone, and if you do hit some winnings/profits cash in and walk away. Never lose more than you can afford to lose. STAY AWAY from virtual casinos/online gambling. Credit card companies also treat online gambling as cash advances, and then you pay more interest.
