- This is the fourth song off the Alaska CD by Between the Buried and Me titled Selkies: the Endless Obsession.
Here are the lyrics to the song:
(slip into something more comfortable...proceed into space)
Innocent individuals
Concerned about nothing but happiness
Progress becomes easy due to this social situation
Unfortunate turn of events
Collapse this idea of childish thought
No judgement towards one another, no social status to compare
All as one
Exploit the idea of innocence
Goddamn television god
Corrupt me
Seperate us
Groups of difference seem to comfort what we once didn't think of
This show was in their head for years
Enjoy this life of wonder and imagination
For it will be torn down
You will be torn down
Time to hate, kill, fuck, conquer
This is human life at its best
We'll televise this event
You can learn how to live, breathe
Then finally die
(The sweet relief is a must)
We can speak of obsession
We can love the endless
Saw these guys during the original colors tour on my birthday and they played colors start to finish with no breaks and at the end I screamed "selkies" and they did it as a finale
The second half of this song is really special.
Agreed.
Yup
For the people who don't understand what the song is about... Its about how because the way our society has set its social standards and boundaries, keeps us caged in to what they want us to think is important contrasting to what REALLY is important. Like the lyrics say ( We can speak of obsession... but we can also love the endless). Which is really all that this Earth needs. And not all this materialistic trash fed to us on a daily basis. The need for power, money, and control is killing this Earth of which is our home. We have lost the true path. So make the best of what you are granted for now because it could be taken away in this lifetime...
Popabuddy1 you got all that?
Popabuddy1 yeah yeah, bunch of hippie shit. All I care about is its good music
hippie people just smoked weed and asked for peace, what does that have anything to do with what I just said? go ahead and enjoy the music no one's stopping you
Popabuddy1 That's the gist of it, yeah. But your comment summed up literally everything about hippie culture. Not that it matters. But it's pretty cliche, that's all my point was.
Who's to say that hippie culture is one of the most profound and intelligent culture to ever exist? Obviously your comment entails the fact that hippie culture is nonsense which kinda offends me. Those people are probably the nicest people that existed in U.S.A during that time period and maybe even now.
Listening to the many different parts in this song is like riding a roller coaster of all things that are great about music
Never heard a solo transition that well from clean to dirty, that was sexy
It gets me everytime dude. The transition is liquid smooth
A hidden gem of a song - I know very few people who know of Between the Buried and Me, but I always come back to this song as an example of artistry in heavy metal.
saw these guys live last month. they opened with this song. it was godly
Nick McDickinPrick I'm glad you got to see them. I got to see them in 2006, Dillinger escape plan headlined and the vocalist of Dillinger javalin threw his mic stand into the crowd... It definitely fucked some people up. Dick move in my eyes.
@@Nick-Stewbreeze I saw BTBAM in London a few years back. They played at the Underworld, two nights running. First night they played a mix of stuff which was great. But on the second night, they played the entirety of Colours, back-to-back. It was definitely one of the best performances I've ever been to!
One of the most beautiful guitar solos of my lifetime. Hands down
jus as good today as it was 20 years ago too
Have been listening to this particular song on repeat for a few days, and it only gets better every time. Truly love these guys talent 💙
holyshit. a girl actually listening to btbam
+John Paul Aguilar Yep! Love them. Alaska is actually my fave album.
This music has definitely made me a better drummer.
I listen to the same songs over and over. Their not easy to learn, and this is coming from someone who plays dream theater, porcupine tree, symphony x and tool.
These gents are geniuses I tell ya!
Genius, BTBAM will always be one of my favorites but this song is one of their best!!
6:32 remember hearing that solo on a commercial for this album, bought it immediatly
The first time I heard this song, I straight cried at the end it was so fucking beautiful!
I have to say, it was nice to visit a band's song's video and NOT see everyone yelling at each other and insulting. :> It put a smile on my face.
Saw them open up for Black Dahlia Murder in 2005. They closed the set with this song......Really didnt listen to them after, fast forward 16 years, and hearing this song takes me back. Great band.
This song: My Endless Obsession
up there with bohemian rhapsody and hotel california as one of the greatest songwriting masterpieces of all time \m/
Um no....not even fucking close....this song will not have a fraction of an impact as much as hotel california or bohemian rhapsody....in 20 years nobody will remember this song.
@@dicksteptoe9199 A song doesn't have to be well known to be a masterpiece
My question is, why is this song not world famous? And why doesn't each selkies video on youtube have millions of views? And honestly, who clicks dislike? Even if you don't like it, to go out of your way to press the dislike button!? That's ridiculous. How can you hate?
The early to mid 2000's were amazing for music, the scene right now can't compete with that era
The Truth Hurts trust me they'll be saying that about this era 10 years from now
When u continue to constantly over and over start the song again, u might have something special on ur hands. The last part of this song is one of the best compositions of music I've heard lyrically and musically,it touches my soul in a way I cant describe
Ahhh, the outtro brings tears to my eyes every time, so epic!
truly one of the most talented bands of our time. the range of skill will never cease to amaze me. this is the same band that put out Anatomy Of, and did it masterfully.
One of the first songs I learned on guitar. Such an inspiration.
NJOverclocked same. Like 5 years ago then stopped playing and forgot everything I learned
If this is one of the first songs you learned, you were born to play guitar
This song contains the best progressive solo in the last 10 years. Epic
Always loved this band from the first song I listened to in 2005, just moved from New Zealand to Charlotte NC, heard/saw Selkies on cable metal channel (in 2005) and fell in love. Never liked death metal or lyrics I couldn't understand, and I couldn't understand a single word apart from the sweet relief part. But I knew I loved what I was hearing even though I thought they were from Norway and was never going to understand them. I have and always will be a Pink Floyd fan and up until I listened to btbam there was no sharing that spot with Floyd. I love The Doors, SOAD, The Pixies, Hendrix, Rammstein (just behind Pink Floyd on my list) but I didn't find out BTBAM were a local band until about a year later when I decided to find out more about the song I heard because it never left my mind. I knew from the first listen whoever created it was more than likely genuinely talented and not into selling out. It's partly why Pink Floyd appealed to me. So I finally caught the song being played again on cable, wrote the name down and went to Amazon, ordered Alaska, looked on the sleeve to find they're from NC. I always planned on seeing them play live in the 4 years I lived there but I didn't somehow. I've since seen them live in Australia twice and NZ once. The NZ concert was was best, but small, very small. They deserve much more. Really good guys as far as I can tell, as I've had the pleasure of talking to them all,as a lot of you undoubtedly have also. Only their talents could exceed their humble and humorous dismeanors.
(BTW, I do know they aren't deat metal, hopefully you got this far before your rant)

Hands down best guitar solo of all time.
Well that’s not true
Could listen to that solo a million times on repeat, it'll never get old. Goddamn it, that's a beautiful solo. As a guitar player myself who composes my own music, I'm jealous.
Saw these guys open for Coheed and Cambria, incredible concert altogether.
I've known about this song for years but never listened to it. My buddy played this for me when we were baked and I don't know why I underestimated it.
This song is beautifully lyrically and musically.
This is the one of the best song in my life!!
i haven't listened to this song in ages..such sweet relief to hear them again! also i would love to hear an 8-bit instrumental version of this.
i saw them live at mr smalls in pittsburgh (i live near pittsburgh), and Tommy Rodgers was sick, and when they played this song he sung it perfect like nothing was even wrong. It was so epic.
This song is amazing.
this song never gets old
One of the best progressive metal songs of all time!
this band is so underrated! just listen to that fucking solo!
5:25 is when earth goes all slowmotion intense style
Amazing band and album
Damn I missed that amazin outro cause I crapped myself the first 20 times of hearing the first 4 mins, epic song!
such a great song
@rabies474 youre exactly right, on what the song is about, deff hit the nail on the head.
I was listening to this song when I killed Ceaseless Discharge in Dark Souls after about 50 tries. I know that this amazing music is what gave the power to do so.
Just found out about them minutes ago, instant fan.
Amazing
this shit is awsome yall need to get noticed fuck man so many people would love you im recomending this shit to every one i know
love all and everything this band, right here in this song! they wrecked the shit- out of this songg
greatest song !!!
Masterpiece!!
Well compose
This song is an endless obsession...
Perfecttt? Masterpiece
the beginning sounds so much like Dream Theater. I love it.
Clicked this vid to fanboy out on my fav btbam track, was not disappointed by rush references (echoing my own impressions of this track).
Spoken like a true prophet, exactly right.
@GNASTY575 You can dude! It's actually pretty simple. Nothing too crazy in the song. The fast scales and alternite picking take time but the sweeps (6:32) are easy as hell. You could learn it in a month or so!
cool music bro
i learned it in 8 hours of non stop playing it... i hated the song by the time i was done so i didnt listen to it for like a month and now i completly forgot how to play it, but i did know how
It reminds of the holy spirit hanging out at the barber shop for too long!!!
Thank you.
awesome
THE song that got me into metal
some of the best progressive metal is made by between the buried and me
Anyone notice the striking similarities of 2:50-3:10 of this song and 0:03-0:26 of iwrestledabearonce's Eli Cash vs The Godless Savages?
Why is there an endless obsession about selkies which I'm convinved they are obessed with?
Time to hate, kill, fuck, conquer
That line was AWESOME!
I really hope they play this when i see them, someone reassure me and tell me that they will! :P
Rhythm*
It's called Progressive Metal. Its more complex than Bieber and RIhanna, so we don't expect you to understand.
possibly best metal song ever? not my favorite band, but the most talented I know... and this is easily the most beautiful song I know. sorry, Bohemian Rhapsody ( im not a huge Queen or clasic rock fan either, but let's admit it, that is also a masterpiece)
Yeahh buddy this song is bad ass lol love it
Yes.
@ChrisHoffmannStudios Dude, Fossil Genera messed with my head. It had like a dark carnival style to it. Was pretty epic though. =p
That solo... :D
Masterpiece
My face and mouth got clean and I have barely nothing to say!!!
Ohmygod that solo oh boy
ALL HAIL TO THE MASTERS OF PROG-METAL
clearly a king crimson influence in that opening riffs
Best BTBAM song ever. If I'm wrong, state the song please.
Yeah something like that. I think it also has to do with followers of endless habits such as murder in its' own special way. I was talking about their endless riffs though lol
At 6:32, the world proceeds to melt around me
Indeed
Also, start from 3:13. If you don't like the Metal sound, you'll like onwards from there. It's fucking beautiful, you pleb.
@jmannunez yeah its easy until the 6 string sweeping
Like someone said before me in this comment section... I don't like the band, but this is good, really good.
Do these guys have a purely instrumental track? I remember coming across a song by them that I really liked. The video had this album cover (but this is RUclips so it could be off a different album in actuality). Not that I think that the roar doesn't take talent (as it most certainly does,) but I personally don't like the sound and I remember they had a pretty good math rock sounding song.
@UninsaneRocker Yeah it seems to be about racism and stereotyping in general from what we see in the media and stuff. The selkies thing is just a clever metaphor. Selkies are some mythical underwater creature or something.
@brutarious just listen to laser speed by between the buried and me. Now that's real elevator music :D
An Endless Sporadic.
I promise i WILL learn the solo.........someday
Oh so fucking beautiful!!!
Just fucking wow.
great:)
@UninsaneRocker Haha I can agree to that. And actually I can kinda see what you mean.
the lyrics are kinda weird but i think its about humans constantly being obsessed with television and the media, that is suppose to be "selkies" i could be entirely wrong but thats my take lol
5 people ended their obsession
because we didn't know what he meant until you said that
friggen awesome guitarists. i play, i know.
I am glue.
BTBAM makes out their songs to be like a journey...
have u ever listened to journey?
will declerk
A journey, not THE Journey
I think this song is about the corruption of humanity due to the darker sides of civilization/technology. Like ending the noble savage. Does anybody know what this song is about?
i dont even like metal that much, i like reage indy rock and rock but i fucking love this song!
