- Why are black cats associated with bad luck and witches? Who came up with that?

I live in Scotland and black cats are lucky here.
Rieces Weirder, I was starting to think I was alone with this belief! I’m Scottish too and was always brought up regarding them as lucky.
I’m of Scottish descent, and always interested in learning more of where my (fairly recent, actually) ancestors came from. I’m going to have to look into this; I’ve never been bothered by black cats, maybe it’s genetic!
The only thing black cats are is cute!
I've kept many black cats over the years, and have one now.. and as often as she crosses my path, I've never noticed an increase in bad lu.. * spills coffee all over keyboard *
😆 Mine, well 1 of my 2, Biscuit, will come lay around my neck and shoulders any time I sit at my computer lol.
That is because they actually are good luck ;)
Cats are wonderful, it doesn't matter the color of their fur, they deserve love and companionship. Great video thank you for posting it It's always good to learn, and you make learning fun.
Around here you can't adopt a black cat during October. The shelter's wont allow it for fear they will be sacrificed.
Pretty much the same here unless you can prove you already have one and/or can be verified as a safe adopter.
I once adopted a black cat from a pet shop, in early October. We had a good relationship with the store, so they called us to ask if we wanted her, because they were concerned about the attention she was getting. They were afraid they'd get broken into if they didn't get her adopted out. She was a "free to a good home, please get her out of here before those loons do something stupid." She was an absolute doll, and we still miss her.
@@miradfalco251 I'm very glad they knew you. I would have melted if I saw her. Love cats of any color, but black cats have a special place in my heart.
Since I just lost my 20 year old cat Bella I’m surprised by the series of recent events that yesterday gave me a female Norwegian forest cat. I named her Freyja as it literally just seemed to fit her. We still have tears for Bella but time helps. Today is my birthday so Freyja is a nice surprise. I think your familiar so to say can be any animal.
I didn't forget your birthday and came here to find you just to tell you Happy Birthday! Under a full moon, not bad! :P hehe
Arith Härger Thank you Arith! 😘🥰
Happy Birthday Seveni S!!
ambervisions Thank you. The full and my beloved Bella brought me a new kitty baby. She’s part bengal part Norwegian forest cat. She’s going to be big and beautiful. I named her Freyja. Cliche lol
I've had black cats all my life. They bring the best luck.
thank you arith for another great video. i am sorry to hear the news about your pet.
Congrats on the 3 years of RUclips!
I have 4 rescue cats living with me, 2 are black. My "best friend" for 18 years was a black cat. I shall always have black cats with me. Thanks for the informative video. I remember your darling cat.
Thanks Arith. Enjoy the season!
I love my black cat. Found him at a gas station a little over a year ago. He's such a character, his name is Panther.
My black cat, Luca, was 19 when he passed, he lived such a good life and for a long time as he was not castrated.
This was a wonderful video! Thank you so much! I thoroughly enjoy your work and all of the topics that you cover. This was especially delightful and appreciated because I have been the owner of a few black cats in the past. I’m presently the owner of a large black rescue dog that people were afraid of at the shelter because he looked so much like a wolf. He happens to be the sweetest, gentlest dog you can imagine. I felt great empathy over the loss of your cat. I also had a beloved cat from 2000 until 2016. She was a Norsk Skoggkat (I hope I spelled that correctly?) named Muffie. I have also had a hard time contemplating getting another cat after that loss.
However, I also missed holding a smaller fluffy animal on my lap or close to my heart space, and so in the time since I have become the owner of four rats! I’m not sure why I thought they would be easier, but they are just as intelligent, affectionate, and lovely as a cat or a dog - but their life spans are so much shorter! My two current rats are called Sven and Einar, and when they are gone, I think I will reconsider my next companions once again. As much as I love rats now, it might be time to consider a longer lived companion!
That said, however, there’s plenty of stigma around rats as well. Many people don’t realize that fancy rats that we keep today are not the same as the street rats associated with the plague (Rattus rattus), but are instead more closely associated with Rattus norvegicus (R. Norvegicus domesticus are the fancy rats), which was not the rat present in the streets of London during that time . Rattus Rattus, however, are another popular scapegoat for the plague in good company with cats and women! 🤣 For that reason alone I’m happy to have them as companions.
Thank you for reminding us of the specialness of our animal companions. I do have a black cat, and a grey, and a tabby, and two strangely colored kittens who were discovered in the chemical storage yard where I worked a few years ago. We are one big Purring Family.
❤
A house isn't a home without a black cat. The more the merrier.
Your Mr looked like such a sweetie 😔❤
it never stops amazing me just how cruel mankind is to its fellow creatures ......and even when not for money or power they still enjoy inflicting death and pain on them .....and for this reason i am ashamed to be called human ! thank you Arith for this video and i am sure that when it is the right time a new animal will come into your life to share it with you and to reduce the pain of loss ...
Thank you for making this video, and advocating for black cats.😁
I've had several cats throughout my life, including 4 black ones, I've noticed they are highly intelligent.. Easy to train, quick learners. ❤
I have always thought that black cats were a symbol of good luck but that's probably the Scottishness in me.
Most likely. Scotts are always differnt :P but there's something I find it curious they also share with Icelanders: There's still to this day a great percentage of Scotts and Icelanders that deeply belieave in spirits of the land, be that trolls, wights or faeries. Interesting.
I understand your feelings about your cat friends. ❤ Our family has had several cats that have been with us and lived happy lives and gone on to the great beyond.
Another wonderful video! I have 12 cats, one is a pure black cat, named Midnight. Cats are amazing creatures! I'm sorry for the loss of your sweet kitty! ❤
I remember Mr Tico :< I'm here since your first introduction video wow time flies..
Thank you so much for being here for almost 3 years now! ;) Time flies indeed.
Thanks for the great video . the lady I'm dating has 4 black cat's and lives by the woods she also has a show car it's a Hearse I think she would have been in trouble back in the day 🖤👻🎃👍
When I adopted my Butch Cassidy, he honestly brought me great luck! He was with his litter mates, Sundance Kid and Miss Etta Place. My stock portfolio appreciated 10X, yes I know the market and that was the main reason; but my black Butch Cassidy made me happy. We bonded. I believe that that helped me immensely. RIP My "baby".
HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM CANADA. Very thankful for all your videos and all the efforts you go through to educate us. My family had a black cat in my youth that my sister named 'demon'. He lived up to his name (in a purely christian sense of the word) ...my mother decided to call him 'Bucket' and his behavior changed. Always found it strange how much a name can effect behavior.
THANK YOU GREAT VIDEO ...THE CATS OF THE WORLD THANK YOU AS WELL ...
There are two black cats in my neighborhood who hang out in my yard. Absolutely lovely.
When I'm done with my house renos, I plan on getting a cat. I'd definitely be open to adopting a black one, so long as it doesn't set off my allergies too badly (usually I've had better luck with grey cats for some reason).
Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the issues surrounding black cats! It's so sad but true that they are more difficult to adopt out simply based on ignorance and superstition. 🖤
What a great informative video. Thank you soooooo much!!
happy spoopy season arith :)
and to you as well ^^
I came here for the cat content and stayed to attend a very interesting history lesson.
Our family had a black cat he died four years ago. We have his ashes with us wherever we move. He brought us nothing but great joy through all of those years. HE grew up with my two sons. Stories of him are still told and they bring back nothing but happy memories. It would be a sad day for anyone I ever found mistreating a cat of any color.
I miss my 17yr old red tabby, a gift he was to me. It has been only 9 weeks since then. And though many a feral cat runs about, none has the spark he possessed. At 2mnths old, up to the point I looked into his vacant eyes. I have not, in truth had a friend, for such a length of time. This is a sadness, yet a great joy, the time we took each other for granted. And the times we sat together in perfect contentment.
Black cats are the best. Every one I've known has been adorably quirky. They're my favorite.
I'm of the opinion that the association of black cats with evil and witchcraft has its roots in the "cat demon" described by many people who have experienced sleep-paralysis.
My white longhair, Snowball, passed-away last December. She was well-loved, and soon after we got her, she would climb me, and sit on my shoulder. Even as a senior cat, it was her favourite roost, even though she was too big for it, and I had to use my forearm to hold up her front half.
Hello Arith, thanks again for another interesting video
I just wanted to say, that in Britain - or at least England - black cats have always been considered lucky, seeing one, owning one or having one run across your path were all considered good luck.
This was true when i was a kid nearly 50 years ago, its possible due to americanization of our youth its no longer true or not so well known.
So i guess we brits were keeping alive the old pagan ways even without knowing it, my grandma, a devout christian, would certainly have been shocked to learn that when she taught me black cats were lucky that she was actually teaching me something pagan haha, i can imagie her crossing herself now.
Anyway just wanted to share
Thornspyre I learned the same thing from my Grandma. Black cats are lucky in Scotland too.
Congratulations, Arith. It's been some time since I have watched your videos due to a huge change in life. Now you successfully kept me away from Netflix for the whole evening, and I feel like I have learned 300% more than the last weeks. Thank you! Keep up the good work :)
the cat of my uncle had brought us children a snake once.
she carried it into the house, put it before us children, sat a bit beside us some, then left... we couldnt even get scared, she was very confident.
those were the best summer holidays. 🙄
and of course no mouse was to be found in her presence.......
if anything, she was the best of luck there was.
A black cat has choosen my place to live in for years.
thank you so much for this, Arith, - Brigit and I loved it. (Brigit is my tiny black queen kitty) - most of my kitties have always been black because i was a volunteer for many animal organizations - and yes, those would be the ones found in a bag near the lake at 5 a.m . . .I had people call me a witch from a very young age; because cats, and a lot of wild animals with follow me around - being in a superstitious area - there you go. I was most surprised when a 'very hip" friend of mine when i was about 30 some years old asked me if I was a witch - and i said; "i could be . . . is it the cats? " and laughed . Anyway - i wanted to say, - don't give up on your camera - you move your hands a lot- I have the same trouble when i set up my new camera - the auto focus with follow my hands when i talk or playing an instrument. Just shut of the auto focus- and set it where you know you'll be sitting - to focus on your face. Cheers -
arith seems like a man with a lot of potential to be dangerous, but he chose wholesomeness instead... i respect that brother
Love your videos
They leave their paw prints on our hearts when we have to let them go. 🐾
I live with a 13 years old black cat. For me cats are a symbol of good luck, no matter what color their fur has. Whenever cats are crossing my way, I have to make friends with them. :)
Nice shirt my friend. The color suits you.
Thank you for this important message about black cats.
I had two, and they were the best. My solid black fur baby passed in 2014 and I will say, I too can’t seem to give my heart again. It is almost 10 years and I talk about her and still shed tears. 😪
Though I am not quite at a place in my life, I do hope when I purchase my off grid property and I will be needing a few mousers. 😁
Currently I am in a new small town in the United States and I think I will give some volunteer hours to the local animal shelter and work with the kitties. At least I will get my kitty fix without bringing one home just yet.
When I lived in Europe for quite a many years, if my one kitty was out in the front garden and people walked by, they were so mean to her and hissing at my poor girl. All she wanted was a scratch behind the ear. I would open my front door and shoo the people down the street. Because I knew how nice my black cat was and she wouldn’t hurt a soul, except for a mouse, fish, frog , and her first kill was a snake when she was a wee kitten. 😮😊
I would say it gets easier, but I would be lying to you. And I wouldn’t want our friendship to start out with a lie.
Take care, and maybe one day we can chat about our cats on a more personal level. Thanks again.
I miss my cat, he was a big stoner and was very wholesome. Half Highlander lynx highbred
Great information. Thank you 🙏
your videos are always so good!
An enjoyable and informative video. Didn't know about white cats having been a status symbol. Mr. Tickle was a handsome fellow, and I appreciate the Halloween colors of your shirt.
Great video as always love the tapestry back drop it is very beautiful
I have always loved black cats! Right now I am feeding a stray black cat that has kittens. She is always welcome at my house. I leave her food every morning and she even saunters into my house whenever she feels like it.
Awesome info👍
I was going to do a BLM joke, but it was too dark. ;) Love and respect for the baby Panthers!
Just got a little black kitten. His name is Abaddon, let the Christians flip out about that lol!
Surprising black cats still exist. I have a rescue black cat she is lovely but she is having bad luck because she is losing her hair. Vets are looking into it and I will do everything I can for her. Thanks for this
Once a black cat saved my life, and the life of my family. I was once in the car with my parents, at night, going back home, and suddenly a black cat crossed the road and made us slow down. Then a few minuts later, further ahead in a crossing, we witnessed a car crash...Due to that black cat we arrived a few second later at the fatal crossing and were not involved in the car crash. I was about 10 year old but since then I thought that to me black cats represent good luck. And by the way, I love cats in general and always had some. They are guardians of our spirit, they absorb bad energies and protect us from evil and illnesses. They always come to you because they feel you need their help, sit on your body and absorb negativity. Arith I really think those 2 red cats you met were telling you it was time to get new kittens, in fact you got two of them, because you met two cats like Mr. Tico. Maybe he was, through those red cats, telling you to do it. Send you all my love to you and those pretty lucky babies you finally let enter in your life.
That’s amazing!
As a child, it was said to be lucky if a black cat crossed your path. But don’t tread on the cracks... that is unlucky 🤣
Ahh...I love my 2 black cats. Even on the other side of the world, there are people who are "afraid" of them. So silly lol. Well done, Mr. Härger.
Nice video again, thanks for the cats !
What is the background drawing from ?
My family has 2 black cats, love them, they have been with us for 5 years now, bother and sister twins... We also have a white cat...
I love my dog! I have a GSP, he sleeps in my bed.
A Greater Sludge Panther?
starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Greater_sludge_panther
Thornspyre no, German shorthair pointer. Not as cool as star wars but he’s got a little more goose step in his groove.
You made me remember that cute black ball of fluff that used to roam the campus near the cafeteria! She was so cute and pretty, she had just one eye, thou.
But she was so talktive! She always ran to me when I saw her lol.
All purring and want to have all the head scratchings ❤️
Wonder what happened to her, never saw her again 🙁
I had a black cat years ago I named Anubis. He died at 15. He definitely was a good guardian of the house. Hoping to get an Anubis tattoo in his honor at some point. Now i just have a bunch of wild "pets". ... snakes, birds, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, hawks, crows, frogs, and lizards... oh, my lol
We tended to prefer black cats because they needed a home. Sadly, we felt the need to make sure they were hidden inside during Halloween because we didn't want them harmed.
I have two black cats that my late husband and I adopted. Star and Dora are my babies. I Am a Witch by the way.😊
𓂀 𓆣 𓆄 𓃠 𓏣 𓎬 𓎃 Mut-Bast bless you Arith, I think a new life will make itself known, it will be up to you to realize it is time.
I have 5 cat's and one black cat. Of course I had to name him Salem 🐈⬛ Every black cat I ever encountered had a very special character 🖤
My first Cat "Gouda" was a BIG black Cat he lived 13yrs with me, and Me-Mau is Black and 2½ yrs so far.
Watching this with my baby laying on my bed purring like a little child
I found two black stray kittens a couple months ago. I got out of my car to take out the trash at my complex. And when I came back they were trying to get in my car. I was going to be late for work so I made the disgusting decision to leave them. I waited until someone came and let them walk over to her, then I took off. I felt bad about it all day and looked for them when I got off but they were gone. I hoped someone had gotten them. Today they showed up at my front door meowing at me. I have no idea how they found me, but I’m positive it was them, the looked the right age and breed. Now I’m watching every video on RUclips about black cats. I’m clearly supposed to know more.
I owned 3 all at the same time….I love them, they are the best cats ever!
What a good cat, they look so much like my Yellow Eyes. He passed just last year, I thought he'd done that thing where a cat vanishes and your not sure what happened... But after several days he made his way to me, he'd been hiding under a neighbors house... I was so furious at the flies, they must have recognized me because they all left him alone as soon as I was nearby, I was grateful they gave him that dignity. I buried him in the middle of my "garden" (I have many varieties of cactus, some giant yucca, one of which survived the loss of its root base, I specifically buried him by that one I think, also theres aloe vera and sometimes marijuana cause california) which is very, very sustainable so he will largely become alive again and be far more drought resistant. Not nearly as pettable... Yes I pet the plants in my garden, aside from the pain cactus I rescued from people trying to kill it because its the pain cactus. Very pretty flowers.
Anyway, thank you as always Arith, Im glad you understand cats.
I adopted a black cat from a guy i used to buy weed from. He was mistreating and under feeding it so we just offered to take him one day. His name is Ninja he has thumbs and is the friendliest cat I ever had. Follows me everywhere for pets, sits on my shoulder when I'm at the computer. Love black cats.
A cat crossing left to right in your view means good luck, right to left means "bad luck". Ive had some good things this month for me, two cats crossed from left to right.
RIP Mr Tico.
My kitten, Loki, is a ginger boy too.
I have the same wall hanging behind you :)
Awesome :D where did you get yours?
@@ArithHärger Oh just at a flea market! I loved it when I saw it and had to have it.. I always wondered the symbolism and origin of it.. outwardly it looks celtic, but to me the couple looked perhaps scandanavian.. esp the mans long hair and beard. I learned that Celtic knotting may have been among both cultures. Finally I found the story behind it.. the two are called "the Lovers" and is based on a particular story of Irish or Scottish folklore... i cant remember it right now though :)
It is only bad luck for truly horrible people who take and take. They are FORMIDABLE loving givers FOR THOSE WHO GIVE and GIVE.
I’ve always had black cats even as a kid, I love cats not just black, but I never chose my cats they chose me
Still missing Mr. Tico - a great cat!
I have a dark grey 170lbs Cane Corso. And we love cats over humans.🍻 although a rat ate the roots of one of my ganja plants last night...
R.I.P Mr Teco
hey the top!
pls make more video about norse mythology
I was born and raised in Alabama. Anything associated with "blackness" was considered a 'sin'. Me personally; I've always seen "blackcats" as good luck.
Black cats aren't bad luck - they are sure as gold money in the home 🖤 I love my beautiful black lady who this September turned 15 🖤 I would forever faced with the opportunity chose a black kitten just because in my storytelling tradition a black cat bring wealth into the home
If I didn't have allergies I would happily get a black cat. They look so pretty.
I've recently heard that there is a vaccination you can do on the cat to reduce allergy problems; the allergy depends on an enzyme in the cat's saliva and tears, and this vaccine reduces down to zero such enzyme, and on a plus it's totally unharmful for the cat itself...Sorry for my bad English, but I hope you'll enjoy this information
you know so much ..thanks..i have a liquorice black cat.
I had a black cat. I thought she was male and called her Lucifer. When I realised she was female, I called her Lucy. Lucy fer Short.
Was wondering where you got that tapestry? I keep looking at it :)
This is why I hate October and Halloween
I love cats. I had a black cat for 9 years.
I have two black cats, and the only bad luck they cause is when they tear up toilet paper or jump on counters.
In Italy black cat is a sign of bad luck only if it cross the road while you are driving and the thing to do to avoid bad luck is... touching your balls! True story.
I am horrified that dogs weren't generally viewed as companions until the last century.
Most of our modern house breeds hadn't existed yet..i believe the more wolf-like ancestors of our furry friends would have been to wild for the family home or anywhere you would want to keep children safe.

Before this video, I was familiar only with the story that the witchhunts themselves unknowingly spawned the black death as a pandemic. The one that says that Yersinia pestis spread spiked rapidly from an overabundance of the rodent-flea hosts which were then and are today responsible for harboring that bacteria. That spike is accounted for in the explanation as follows. By the 14th-century arrival of the infamous "death ships" at Messina port - a century after Vox in Rama - cats were already associated with evil, satan, and witchcraft and therefore remarkable numbers of cat slayings long had been and were still in progress. The feral and domestic cat populations were dramatically depleted, conditions were created for the rodent populations to reach a previously unheard of prodigiousness, and as a result, the virtually unmitigated spread of Yersinia pestis took off.
The two stories offer a decidedly different timeline for comparing the occurrence of the black death with the onset of "cat demonization." haha. As usual, your videos catch my eye and I find them very fascinating. (:
I thought they were unlucky because black cats are hard to see after dark in a world without light bulbs.
Even in (pre-)history a dogs life was a dogs life. In dutch and Frisian there is a very old expression concerning going hungry or missing out on dinner by being home late referred to by 'finding the dog in the (cooking-) pot'. Evidence for such a stew is known froma late Iron Age cooking pot with such an unfortunate dog in Groningen. I myself found on a dig in the terpmound of Techum, Friesland, a second century female skull (just the skull) in a little pit, placed on a floor of potteryshards, surrounded by cat bones. Something else entirely! A second skull of man in his twenties was found later that day, obly with a shard of samean ware (terra sigillata) and signs of defleshing. The female skull was dubbed 'the witch of Techum', the male (skalped) skull simply as 'the poor bugger'. Sill wonder what role the cat played in this situation.
I love cats
WHEN CATS FART THEY STINK AWFULL BUT YOU CAN NEVER HEAR THEM DO IT,
My black cat would protect my dog. This dog started a fight with my dog at my house cat come out of the bushes got on top of the dog and beat that poor dog up. He got off went over to my dog kiss him then claws him. His name was claws. When he did that he loved you. He was a dog hater but only loved one. Rest In Peace Claws
