A Shave Horse from One Log

  • In this episode I take a walk into the past. We examine how using a simple 6' log and yield an invaluable homestead tool called a shave horse. A shave horse is a foot operated vise that is used to hold lumber in place so the user can carve it using a drawknife or spokeshave. This practice was common on the frontier and homesteads up until the early 1900's.
    Enjoy!

Love this video, Dan. Please grind away the steel that has mushroomed passed the edge of that splitting edge. From personal experience, they will break away and lodge in hands, arms, legs and eyes.

I'd even suggest to use wooden mauls for some of the wedge work to limit mushrooming. The wedges are less effective that way. My brother used a 16 lb sledge on one my dad had and that wedge was almost useless it was out of shape so bad.

May I suggest that you make the footplate about a foot longer. It would allow you to keep your legs in a much more comfortable position, as well as give you more pressure on the piece of wood that you are working on. It will also allow you to open and close the jaws easier and with more control. I used one of these for decades.

Nice looking horse. I usually use a crotch to make the dumb head. A lot less work. I also do my best to do a 3 legged bench using another crotch for the legs. Like a giant slingshot with the "handle" fitted into the bench. I am probably not describing it well but anyone who has spent time watching The Woodright's Shop on PBS has probably seen the episodes that covers the genuine versions of the colonial shaving horses that go back to Germany.

I COMMEND YOU ON YOUR HARD WORK AND MAKING A EXCELLENT VIDEO.
