    This is one video I missed. Glad I found it. When I lived in Maui I invited my daughter to visit us twice. I told her we'd be sightseeing and hiking. Each trip she packed three suitcases with one of them filled with spiked heels. She opened just one of the suitcases the entire week to access shorts and tee shirts. She wore her tennis shoes all week. She could have come over with a backpack with all she needed and saved me the pain of loading and unloading her 40 to 50 pound luggage. When I travel I wear a backpack and carry a 40 liter duffle bag containing everything I would need for a two weeks stay; laundering would have sustained me forever.

    I agree with ALSN OVERLAND. Lucy will so get into this overland life. Not sure when or what age but I know that if you grow up with it then you'll return to it at some point. Great vlog as usual my good man. We are so lucky as humans to appreciate the simpler things in life. I must say I don't know how some folk prefer high rise buildings to forests and hills (baffles me) but each to their own. As I've mentioned before please keep persuading your children to take part as much as possible to make them aware that the magic in life is just a short drive from your home not playstation or any other craze that keeps us stuck indoors. Wish more parents did what you do. Wholesome good fun...

      Haha, yes, at the moment she's more interested in the exposure on RUclips than the actual wilderness adventure, but hopefully she'll develop an appreciation for getting out into nature. She's three years from being able to get her drivers license but has already expressed an interest in some kind of 4x4. Not a Subaru like her father (of course) but she likes the Jeep Wrangler (HA! We'll see if that happens!)

    I have a 2012 Forester Subaru with 140,000 miles on it, no problems with it done general maintenance on it. I have seen videos on the forester they raised the car a little and put on some off road tires and put on a brush guard with light on front of the vehicle and they did all right in the back woods traveling on dirt roads.

They definitely enhance the end product even when they're entirely behind-the-scenes (well, if Lucie is involved, it's just about impossible to keep her from getting in front of the camera, LOL). Enjoyed this, thanks, what type of trees are those very upright planted trees? Curious 🇿🇦

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  5 лет назад

      @@robbrent They are Douglas Fir. Despite the name, it is technically not in the fir tree family but is actually its own genus, Pseudotsuga (false hemlock). Douglas Fir is essentially a crop in western Oregon, harvested and replanted in ~30 to 50 year cycles. They can get pretty massive over the course of hundreds of years, but there's very little "old growth" forest left in Oregon, nearly everything we see is has been logged at some point and the trees are second- or third-growth.

      I actually did a walkthrough video a couple of months ago which covers pretty much all of the details:
      ruclips.net/video/jHM54xIxdkw/видео.html
      I don't talk about mileage in that video however because I've never tracked it that closely, but I think I'm generally in the 20-25 mpg area. MPGs drop significantly with 75mph freeway trips and with city driving, and is at its best during relatively flat 60 mph highway road trips. My mileage decreased when I put the heavy KO2s on; mileage improved a little when I got rid of my roof basket and moved to my current roof setup.

  • @izaakdaviddiggs
    @izaakdaviddiggs 5 лет назад +2

    Great video. Curious what sort of MPG you get in day to day driving with the lift and tires

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  5 лет назад +1

      To be honest, I haven't tracked my mileage. I don't really want to know. I just keep reminding myself, I'd be burning more fuel in a Jeep or other larger 4x4. 8^) The tires probably made the biggest impact though...the KO2s are really heavy and I can feel how much harder the car works moving forward from a standstill. It's very very reasonable on highway trips though (i.e. 60 mph rural highways, not 75 mph freeways) and it seems like the mileage improved when I changed up the roof configuration and got rid of the basket. Thanks for watching!
