RCD (Residual Current Device) protection - Protection against Earth Faults

  • RCD (Residual Current Device), or residual-current circuit breaker (RCBO), is a device that instantly breaks an electric circuit to prevent serious harm from an ongoing electric shock.
    What does an RCD (Residual Current Device) do - An RCD is a sensitive safety device that switches off electricity automatically if there is a fault.
    An RCD is designed to protect against the risks of electrocution and fire caused by earth faults. For example, if you cut through the cable when mowing the lawn and accidentally touched the exposed live wires or a faulty appliance overheats causing electric current to flow to earth.
    How Does RCD (Residual Current Device) works - These electrical wiring devices are designed to quickly and automatically disconnect a circuit when it detects that the electric current is not balanced between the energized (line) conductor(s) and the return (neutral) conductor. Under normal circumstances, these two wires are expected to carry matching currents, and any difference can indicate a short circuit or other electrical anomaly is present, such as leakage. Leakage can indicate a shock hazard (or shock in progress) which is a potential danger to a person. Current leakage can result in harm or death due to electric shock, especially if the leaking electric current passes through the torso of a human. A current of around 30 mA (0.030 amperes) is potentially sufficient to cause cardiac arrest or serious harm if it persists for more than a small fraction of a second. RCDs are designed to disconnect the conducting wires quickly enough to prevent serious injury from such shocks, commonly described as the RCD being "tripped".
    Disadvantages of RCD (Residual Current Device) - RCD does not provide protection against unexpected or dangerously high current (called spikes or surges) when current is flowing in the usual wires in the circuit, therefore it cannot replace a fuse or protect against overheating or fire risk due to overcurrent (overload) or short circuits if the fault does not lead to current leakage.
    RCD (Residual Current Device) worldwide - In the United States and Canada, the device is more commonly known as a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), ground fault interrupter (GFI) or an appliance leakage current interrupter (ALCI). In the United Kingdom, these are better known by their initials RCD, and a combined RCD+MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is known as a RCBO (residual-current circuit breaker with overcurrent protection). In Australia, they are sometimes known as safety switches or an RCD. An earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB) may be a residual-current device, although an older type of voltage-operated earth leakage circuit breaker also exists. In German-speaking countries the device is sometimes known as FI where the F stands for fault (Fehler) and I for the symbol that represents electric current.

    0:00 - Engineer looks at diagram before starting video and asks how does 9.996A + 0.006A add up to 10.000A. My maths isn't advanced enough for this level of complexity. ;-)

      RCD for additional protection is 30mA = 0.030A. I am just wondering why the video is showing difference in live currents of 0.006A. It won't even 10mA RCD make operate.

    so if we touch the netral conductor in this case. what will happen? dose the RCD cut the power ( the function is still the same when we touch live conductor)

    In practice ,why an RCD trips if you cut through a cable with live and neutral only causing short cut?
    The sum of high current is still the same!

      Sum of the current isnt same...You have before RCD one sum of current and after RCD where short circut is happened current is much higher...Willl RCD trips depends on many things, In practice first will trip fuse, because fuse is much faster then RCD. But also RCD will trip if is fast aprox. 0.1 seconds

      The RCD "does not know" if you cut through a cable or have a high resistance device connected!
      I dont think you understand electrics, talking about RCD measuring current before it and after.

      Then you may understand that RCD balances current on load side only!!!
      This conversation is a waste of time with "so called engineers" with no basic knowledge!

    Is it good to use RCD as the main breaker and the branches are MCB's??? What if the loads connected in each branches are all ok for its ampere rating but it happened that the total current flows to the main breaker is more than the capacity of your main breaker. Since RCD has no protection in overload, what will happen is your main breaker will not trip and most probably the breaker that feeds your panelboard is the one will trip. Please give me a reply because I want to know if what I am saying is right or wrong. Thanks

      From my experience I dont like to put RCD as the main breaker...When I worrk in housing I allways put main MCB...I calculate my main MCB in relationship to my main cable

      On the last part of your video it is shown that RCD are installed together in the combination with MCB's to have best practice. I thought on that illustration RCD is the main breaker...thanks

    Suppose if live wire is touching earth and in earth fault rccb doesn't work and the the earth wire is touched by a person ,will rccb trip and if it trips then why?

      Rccb can never be used for earth faults. For earth fault elcb is used which trips the ckt when earth fault occurs.

      Same an RCD is called a GFCI in the US. There are some differences thighm In the US the threshold current is 5 mA, in Europe it is 30 mA.

    I need an explanation: when there is no energy in the system, RCD yet recognise somehow and turns off the circuit. I experienced this when 3 phases and neutral connected to RCD and make ground and neutral short circuit from output of it. How that happens?

    What if I want my electrical instalation in my home to be protected against electrical shock and from fire incident, should I install 2 different rccb with different tripping current or i could just buy/install an rccb with the highest tripping current rating for both requirements?

      RCDs dual Function AFCI/GFCI devices offer both electrical fire prevention and shock prevention, I made in my home (apartman) two RCD one for living rom and other rooms and one only for bathroom both are 30mA

      After I did some search on the internet, the AFCI caused many troubles instead giving protection that it should provide.
      So, is it not an odd/wrong this to install 2 different RCCD for 2 different purposes? Then, how's the wiring? Could you provide my some enlightment? Thank you.

      I don't use 3 phase system in my house.
      The wiring that i wanted to ask to you was, how is the wiring in the mcb box with 2 different rccb, 1 for the electrical shock prevention and the other one for the fire prevention while i already have 3 mcb (each 10A) for separating 3 different lines inside that mcb box.

      To protect phase and neutral 4 pole mcb is used which carries three phase wires and 1neutarl wire.

    Question: How can I wired a RCD if when our power source is Line to Line(110VAC each) only and no Nuetral wire or Earth wire provided, The cooperative here in our place they only run 2 wire(line to line) only to their consumers and nothing else, Can I still use a RCD if not, any suggestion or remedy? Thanks

    If a device draws current and some of that energy is lost through inefficiency, why do we expect the current returned to be equal to that of what is supplied?

      I think that lost current through inefficiency Can not influence that RCD switch reacts

      It's a bit late but it is impossible to lose current through inefficiency. Inefficiency is, generally, due to heat loss which is just wasted energy if it doesn't provide some other purpose. Current will always be the same through a series path irregardless of what loads are on the circuit.

      Energy losses in case of residential loads follow the principle of I^2R which are in fact the voltage drops occurring on the conductor. Thus the incoming current through live wire and outgoing current through the neutral wire always remains same despite of energy losses.

      Regardless of the efficiency of a circuit, you MUST have a complete path for current to flow. An inefficient circuit simply "consumes" more energy (draws more current) than would an efficient circuit for the same task. The amount of current in the source wire is still equal to the amount of current in the neutral.
      If someone or something provides an alternative path to ground other than the neutral wire, then the current in the source wire will exceed the current returning in the neutral wire and the RCD will trip. This is because whatever is touching the source wire is "bleeding off" some of the current.
      A common misconception is that the neutral wire is "ground" or "earth." This is because we misnamed it "neutral" but it is anything BUT neutral. Yes, it is connected to ground at the panel but it carries all the current back to the panel with it. It is a "current carrying conductor." A person can get shocked by the neutral wire as well. The RCD will still trip in this condition also since the current returning on the neutral is divided between the person touching the wire and the neutral wire returning to the panel.
      I've used the word "source" wire here instead of "hot" wire or "load" wire. This is because I also dislike the word "hot wire" since the "neutral wire" also carries current and may also be considered "hot." If I could change the way we name these wires, I would call the neutral wire a "return" since that is its actual function--it "returns" the current to the panel.
