My wife was so happy when she saw a woman that embraced her natural hair be acknowledged as beautiful. She had been toiling through the routine of straightening her hair and extensions all her adult life because the prevalent perception here in the DR is that straight hair is more attractive. When she asked me how I would feel about her having natural hair I simply said that her hair does not define her beauty because her beauty radiates from within. I she is very cute with natural hair and now that she no longer has the burden of an endless process of trying to conform to societal expectations she is happier.

Then another colleague said to me word for word: “oh is she a mix?”. I looked at her dead in the eye and said “no”, then asked “why did you ask that question? Why did you ask whether she’s mixed race”. She couldn’t answer, she just said I guess it’s interesting that I did... I guess I thought because you say she’s beautiful”
