Dan & Oskar, your timing hit right on Giving Tuesday...at least here in the US. Hope one new Bin helps! The challenge seems monumental for two guys there on the ground, however one day at a time and they can make a difference...especially with you two spreading the word. I trust your judgement in the telling and for the fundraiser.
Couple of questions clarifications about the Police incident, Dan, maybe you'll answer *On Air with Dan and Alex* tomorrow, if not yet recorded. First, were they confirmed City or State Gov Police or glorified Mall Cops exploiting their uniform & power out to make a buck? Dan did you show the copy of your US or your Swedish Passport and why the choice?
Were you targeted as two rich white dudes with a camera? They must have some dough.
Did you report the incident to the US Consulate? (Don't know how Swedish Gov works.)
Reporting to US State Dept, not that they interfere and possibly endanger Sabine and her boyfriend, but so there is a record. As an older Solo traveler, I have relied on the (US) State.gov site and email and SMS alerts for up to date information about where I go and the dangers that are locally known by State. [If you've never looked, check out what is available for a US citizen abroad, your opinion on it's thoroughness from your real world experience would be really helpful! I may be over relying on their knowledge base.] The Consulate and Ambassador needs to know what travelers are experiencing so they can include it it talks, and that only happens if it gets prioritized because people report incidents.
Please also talk about what you might do differently in future, and more advice on how to act and react. I assume age and gender make a difference? When should you ask to speak with a Senior Police Official or next step to a Consular Official (without escalating the situation)?
So sorry you two had to join that group of Experienced Travelers who've been hit up for a bribe, and so glad it's behind you now, and you are both okay.

Hi @OskarandDan, thanks for the video. Just a quick reminder, the govt actually knows the number of residents of Kibra aka Kibera. In the last national population and household census done in 2019, it was found that the district is home to roughly 110,000 souls (way down from what UN and World Bank had initially estimated to be 1 million). Otherwise, save for your encounter with local law enforcement agents, I hope you had a good time in the country, and look forward to coming back again.

takes 2 minutes to look on google maps and study how big the slum is. then you can calculate yourself an aprox number of people that live there, i assure you that 1 million is a great underappreciation.

What an experience for sure..sorry for all that.. after the past attacks and security concerns we've had in Kenya, most if not all public spaces now have at least these two Police officers with the scary machine guns... even as a local I've been stopped a couple times by the security guards just because of taking photos but never an aggressive encounter like you guys went through...
Thanks for the Kibera video; as a Kenyan I have never visited the neighborhood and it's amazing how the locals are helping improve the garbage disposal.
We truly appreciate the risk you take to make sure we have a video to watch. Thanks for tagging us along your adventures 🎉❤

I had a similar experience in Mexico trying to cross the border in Tijuana and a police officer pulled us over, said we were speeding and then proceeded to bribe us. Or have all your stuff in order, but that includes having your Passport with you at all times, something I'd avoid in Nairobi.

I volunteered as a nurse last year at a small hospital in Arusha, Tanzania. The program director was adamant that each of us go to some random kiosk place in a mall in the center of the small city to get a photocopy of our passport STAMPED with our arrival into Tanzania and to never carry our actual passport on us. This gave me the impression that in some countries, at least, it is perhaps not even sufficient to pull out an older photocopy of the passport. It drove home the point that our passports are truly precious and they can most certainly be used against you in dicey situations.

This is in no way to justify the police behaviour, (we all dislike Kenyan security guards and police conduct) BUT In Kenya's defense as a Kenyan born and breed,we have had a series of terrorist attacks in the past so in an attempt to mitigate more terrorism filming is banned in some areas like malls and airports. Incase y'all don't know about the westage attack in 2013 that was a wake up call for the country.

I only went there to transit to Tanzania which is 100% better and well worth viviting.
