Steve Young was my idol as a kid. I watched those BYU football VHS tapes over and over. He made me want to be a Quarterback. I lost my father to suicide in my early 20's and I've had panic attacks since junior high. My Dad was the type to say "never admit that you have anxiety because people will treat you differently". So, It's great to see someone like Steve being an advocate for mental health, particularly mentioning being vulnerable in a "macho" culture.
Thank you, Brother Young for speaking about this. I watched you play at BYU and we had mutual friends on the 49ers but what you shared today was one of your most spectacular plays! My daughter at BYU was struggling with anxiety and it is so important to know how common and important it is to get the right kind of help. Thank you for all you do to serve others.
“To discredit, to shame….” How often is that done every day ! Our world is lacking in love and acceptance and over flows with critique and cynicism. What great advice from Steve to every one of us. If we are the one listening to someone . . . . Sit and listen, do not judge, and just LOVE that person !
Shame is the source of SO MANY mental health issues and cycles, especially addiction...how do we stop all the shame, when shaming is sometimes well intentioned and unintentionally damaging?
Thank you for talking about this! As someone who used BYU mental health services and now as a mental health provider and advocate we need to hear more people (who are ready and willing to) speak out about their experiences.

Steve Young was the quarterback at BYU my Freshman year in Provo. He was a joy to watch. Thank you for this needed, helpful, heartfelt message.
I have watch Steve YOung as a cougar and as a 49er. He is the reason I was a 49er fan. Great player, greater human being, thanks Steve.
