Lovely music.I saw this back in 1985, new in the theater. The music, the scenery, the emotions... all breathtaking. I will never forget that experience. This movie still holds me in awe of it.
When she says he is waiting there for me....and then she remembers her flight with him, reaching over and him touching her hand, I get over come with emotion and I always cry....
My favourite scene from my favourite movie. Watched it for the first time when I was 12 years old. Now, almost 24 years later I still love it! And I still cry while watching it and listening to the beautiful music by John Barry.
Me too! I have the same strong emotion every time I see it. Probably is one of the most poetical scene in the history of movies with an unforgettable soundtrack!
I think this was the end of the old school- movie making... from here forward it was all cgi... Luckily you can't do that with John Barry. And this score is simply untouchable..
I think it's this five minutes of the film that got it The Oscar. The flashback scene, the music and then the gorgeous scenery. A work of art to say the least.
So beautiful, it's a great sequence. "Where did you get it? ". "Mumbassa". "When did you learn to fly?"..........."Yesterday! ". When they're flying over the flock of birds, and the music starts to swell, I get all emotional and weepy. It gets me every time I hear this movement. It's just so soul stirring, majestic, noble and lovely. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford make a cute couple, don't you think?! Me like them ALOT!!
You too huh?, When the choir-strings blend into the main theme when they're flying over the birds, It really gets into you and when they're flying through the clouds, That does it for me.
This film, the acting & unspeakably gorgeous music has been a part of me since I first saw it. Felt so sad when I heard John Barry died. It truly touches the soul with its beauty. You won't see movies like this again. And you'll never hear music like John Barry's.
John Barry created iconic themes for Bond, Dances with Woves, this film and many more. His music and legacy will live on withljust the Bond main theme alone!
Having lived in Nairobi, Kenya and having also visited Karen area (which is named after Karen Blixen)on countless occasion, I remember visiting the house once when they were filming there. Now seeing these scenes after all these years, really brings back good memories of my time in Nairobi. So much so that I have tears in my eyes. A beautiful movie that always brings good memories for me whenever I watch this movie.
John Barry can take a scene, add his touch of genius and make it blossom into something so magically beautiful that you will remember it for the rest of your life.
So beautifully said. I wish he could have lived so much longer as I long for more of his transcendent compositions. I do remember everyone I've ever heard. I sat next to a musician once who found his music simplistic. I wanted to smack him as the complexity of emotion was in the perceived simplicity of the music.
John Barry was to me, the finest composer of film scores, ever. His music will live forever in the great films he scored. Incredible, beautiful and timeless. Just the Bond themes alone make him a cut above the rest! Out of Africa is my favorite, and always moves me to tears.
That is the most memorable scene, from "Out Of Africa". How magnificent! I can't imagine what that must have been like, to fly over that lake, and see all those beautiful flamingos, and all of that gorgeous scenery! Excellent!😊💒
Out of Africa ---# 3 of my Top Ten Best Movies ever, and this scene has to be one of Cinema's finest in history , Redford and Streep are superb , Sydney Pollack brilliant directing , Cinematography, Music Score and a fantastic Screenplay , this movie was well worth watching for almost 3 hrs , not a bit boring , got to get the DVD !!! Hopefully with oodles of Special Features !
Thank you for this moving scene. Saw this incredible movie in the theater and bought ( wore it out) the video back then, one time when having the flu, watched it like 4 times in one day...Robert, Meryl and Sydney, unbeatable. .Magic of Africa and John Barry...Heaven !
I just love the film so much and the soundtrack is absolutely perfect. Robert and Meryl are amazing together. It's probably my favourite scene in the whole film
I cant watch this without get tears in my eyes. Its imposible, an absolutly moment of happiness, beauty, peace where two souls just find themselves... too strong for me
Even both can't read this, I want to thank Sidney Pollack and John Barry for this incredible piece of art. Thanks to this film and soundtrack they will live forever
Soaring strings, mellifluous horns, John Barry, composer supreme, Superimposed over African landscapes, almost a surrealist dream. The backdrop of mountains with rivers cascading as, sparkling, they fall into space Can almost bring tears to the eye while detecting those plaintive heartbreaking displays Of glorious sweeping, towering arpeggios, descriptive perfection is heard To compliment exquisite, vast panoramas, as if through the eye of a bird. That imposing, solitary, breathtaking beauty as wings traverse over the plain, Enhanced by the glorious expansive melodic cadences in perfect refrain, Give all who encountered this maestro's artistry a genuine sense of emotion, Which always enhances, increases the pleasure experienced beyond all proportion. And though he is gone, his music lives on in our memories, always to treasure, For which we give thanks to this Yorkshire lad whose genius has given such pleasure.
One of my favorite movies of all time. So romantic. They were so good for each other. partners who challenged each other and gave each other a wider perspective on life. ♡
This was my grandmother's favourite movie, and we watched half of it few weeks before she passed away. I watched this scene so many times after that, and each time I think of my grandmother on that plane with Robert Redford, flying over the beauty of those landscapes. I love this scene so much.
"A glimpse of the world through god's eye." fantastic idea to cut these two scenes together. and I very much like the dialogue: "Where did you buy it?" - "Mombasa!" - "When did you learn to fly?" - "Yesterday!" :-))
Bandula Jayawardene. Thank you John Barry for your most absorbing music. A special word of thanks to Sydney Pollack for his direction of the movie Out of Africa. We are so unlucky that both of you have gone and who are to fill your places. That scene of the movie is the best and most touching. She sees Africa through God's eye in that piece of music and the film. Towards the end of that scene she stretches her hand backwards in acknowledging her love and he in turn holds it. That is the efficiency and the inspiration of the director. We miss you both for of you as you are excellent in your field of profession. Thank you once again for the most beautiful music and absorbing film. I am in debt for all that. Bandula Jayawardene
I am so happy all of you liked that particular scene from the movie and the music. Only thing what I can say is you all have a very good taste of music and appreciate good films. Bandula Jayawardene
Wonderful film, music, and acting cast, I have watched this so many times, even bought the DVD, They just cannot make them like this any more. Thanks for the posting.
The first movie my future wife and I saw together. I insisted that we wait still theater emptied until we left an and watched the credits. We were both overwhelmed! Josh
Sad thing is that it was 30 yrs ago when Sydney Pollack made the film. I doubt Africa looks the same..and that is a shame. One of the best movies ever imo and one of the best soundtracks. Thank you both Mr. Pollack and Mr. Barry!
It's funny, for so long I really didn't pay much attention to movie scores. And i have watched a lot of movies. But when I saw Dances with Wolves, then i understood, it wan't just the acting, it was the music, it brought that film to life. Then I saw Out of Africa, and I understood it was really John Barry that made the difference. Wish I could have made his acquaintance, because his work made you heart soar like this airplane thru the clouds over the African landscape. RIP John Barry, may your good works have earned you a place in heaven!
No it wasn't it was my Great Uncle Sir Henry Dalrymple-White, who was a flying instructor in Nairobi in Kenya and he was a pilot in the Second World War. My Great Uncle died in 2006 and he wasn't a liar, if you want to find out more about him you just have to look him up in The Peerage!
At the time of filming this movie I was 6 years old and living in Kenya with my parents. We visited Karen Blixen's house (played by Meryl Streep). The crater in the video at 3:00 is Mount Longonot which I climbed on foot with my father. This movie is one of the most romantic movies ever. Makes me cry every time, longing for the romance and the woman of my life if she even exists. I was there and I also became a pilot... Sigh...
Your comment is wonderful. I am also a pilot (born 1952) and share your feelings on this. In the Nineties I used to fly in New Guinea and of course I flew inside volcano calderas such as in this movie. I miss the flying terribly. I'm almost 70 now.
"He even took the gramophone with him on safari. Three rifles, supplies for a month, and Mozart. He began our friendship with a gift. And later, not long before Tsavo, he gave me another - an incredible gift: a glimpse of the world through God's eye. And then I thought, "yes, I see. This is the way it was intended." I've written about all the others not because I loved him less, but because they were clearer, easier. He was waiting for me there. But I've gone ahead of my story. He'd have hated that - Denys loved to hear a story told well. You see, I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills. But it really began before that; it really began in Denmark. And there I knew two brothers. One was my lover, and one was my friend. I had a farm in Africa... I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills. I had a farm in Africa..."
That is indeed the popular theory. In reality Karen Blixen had her own string of scandalous affairs which apparently included her own native servant. The origin of her malady therefore remains inconclusive. Both parties were probably equally to blame.
Herman Labuschagne: Thanks for your Post... 'guess I'll have to get the book. Would love to watch this film w/ Lisa... holding hands, an arm wrapped around her shoulder. Ah, heck... I Believe in miracles too!
I worked in Papua New Guinea as a pilot flying small planes in the Nineties and can confirm this lol. Although John Barry's music was absent in my situation :-) This scene really touches me and has stuck in my mind since I first saw the movie in 1985. Mozart's and John Barry's music together in this movie enriches it like nothing else could.
When I was flying from Newark to Amsterdam 12 years ago and then on to KIA to climb Kilimanjaro, I read Hemingway's book. Never knew he died at the end with the pilot flying him over Kilimanjaro rather than to the Arusha hospital as he knew he was near death.

Lovely music.I saw this back in 1985, new in the theater.
The music, the scenery, the emotions... all breathtaking.
I will never forget that experience. This movie still

Couldn’t. Agree more. A masterpiece. Out on its own.
When she says he is waiting there for me....and then she remembers her flight with him, reaching over and him touching her hand, I get over come with emotion and I always cry....
A beautiful scene from a great film. I left in tears at the end. Cant say that about many I've seen in sixty years. The music makes it.
My favourite scene from my favourite movie. Watched it for the first time when I was 12 years old. Now, almost 24 years later I still love it! And I still cry while watching it and listening to the beautiful music by John Barry.

So am I. My favourite scene from my favourite movie.....
I think this was the end of the old school- movie making... from here forward it was all cgi... Luckily you can't do that with John Barry. And this score is simply untouchable..
Ditto. And I’m 82.
I have always loved this movie. The photography, the music. Whenever I fly, I always play this scene as the plane ascends into the air.....
This scene STILL takes my breath away & steals my heart, even after 25 years.
I think it's this five minutes of the film that got it The Oscar. The flashback scene, the music and then the gorgeous scenery. A work of art to say the least.
A wonderful. Masterpiece. I just. Love. Everything. About. It.
So beautiful, it's a great sequence. "Where did you get it? ". "Mumbassa". "When did you learn to fly?"..........."Yesterday! ". They made a perfect couple--too bad he wouldn't marry her. And her first husband was a bastard.😒💒
Best scene in the movie ! And the music is so beautiful, I choke up every time I watch this

Impossible that someone could capture this kind of beauty on film and match it with music so wonderful.........magic!

The scene, the music. Just so beautiful.
Yes
Einfach nur schön: Der Film, die Musik, die Schauspieler, die Zuschauer!
Breathtaking country.. Kenya, East Africa.
Soaring strings, mellifluous horns, John Barry, composer supreme,

Thanks for the delightful poem :-)
Thank you Peter, glad you approve.
Merci pour cette vidéo, c'est mon film préféré ainsi que Robert Redford en tant qu'acteur !

This was my grandmother's favourite movie, and we watched half of it few weeks before she passed away. I watched this scene so many times after that, and each time I think of my grandmother on that plane with Robert Redford, flying over the beauty of those landscapes. I love this scene so much.
Isabella Cannatà: you make me feel like I can see her too.
:)
"A glimpse of the world through god's eye." fantastic idea to cut these two scenes together. and I very much like the dialogue: "Where did you buy it?" - "Mombasa!" - "When did you learn to fly?" - "Yesterday!" :-))
My favorite scene! :)
In 2012, during my trip to Kenya, I hired a pilot to fly my roughly the same route. Simply breathtaking...
Very nice!
the same ;)
Amazing
A fully and complete masterpiece. My goodness how wonderful is earth.
This one and MOONRAKER sound so much alike. Absolutely stunning and beautiful.
Una de las escenas más maravillosas del cine. Música, imagen, actores... Una delicia!

That's very civilised to stay to watch the credits. I do invariably. And it's interesting how much one finds out from doing this.
When she reaches for his hand....one of the most romantic and sweet moments
misled1982 yesss indeed ❤
absolutely - and this beautiful beautiful music with it
John Barry truly gifted .R.I.P
Merveilleux. ...le film les acteurs la musique. ....

Oops and I forgot to mention the Born Free score. Wow what an omission on my part.
Mark Paul Casagrande: Regretfully must submit it is only through the innocent Blood of JESUS Christ that we gain entry to Heaven.
I first saw this when i was in high school. Magnificent now as it was then..
breathtaking
They won an oscar for that film because of my Great Uncle's flying skill! RIP Uncle Henry!
I think was Ted Gos the pilot
No it wasn't it was my Great Uncle Sir Henry Dalrymple-White, who was a flying instructor in Nairobi in Kenya and he was a pilot in the Second World War. My Great Uncle died in 2006 and he wasn't a liar, if you want to find out more about him you just have to look him up in The Peerage!

The beauty of the world should never be taken for granted hold your breath for moments like this💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟
how to get chicks to fall in love with you: fly them over a beautiful landscape while playing john barry
If you call women chicks you never get them with anything.
I worked in Papua New Guinea as a pilot flying small planes in the Nineties and can confirm this lol. What is so nice about this part is how well it links to the end of Hemingway's "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" - same topos, same fascination.
voltamore: Thanks for the tie-in!
When I was flying from Newark to Amsterdam 12 years ago and then on to KIA to climb Kilimanjaro, I read Hemingway's book. Never knew he died at the end with the pilot flying him over Kilimanjaro rather than to the Arusha hospital as he knew he was near death.
I miss Africa... I want to come back!
John Barry's score and Sydney Pollack's images = cinema perfection.

I love Streep, Redford, Pollack, and Universal Pictures if only for the breathtaking beauty of this sequence...
When did you learn to fly?
Yesterday.
This is amazing. John Barry. The music and the scenery is incredibly.
pure majestic sweeping music.
"a glimpse at the world through God's eye."
The first movie my wife of 34+ years and saw together. She wondered why I wanted to wait until the credits were done. The theatre would clear out an d great music at the end of every movie.
Absolutely!! I always do that. First of all, it's the civilised and polite response to the makers of the movie and the music at the end is probably the best from the movie. I'm so
happy that someone else sees it this way. Cheers from Australia :-)

I am delighted to have lived in the same place as John, the city of York in the UK would inspire anyone
Peter Farnhill: Inspire some one to get Out of York? Try Brazzaville Texas... 90miles East of Houston.
What a beautiful, moving scene. And if I could do something like that for a woman...well, I don't think I'd have to place an ad on Match.com. lol
