Incredible video! I looked at Google Maps Street View for Mayfield before the tornado. Hard to believe that is the same place. Hope you got your regular sleep pattern back after that trip.
Great video, Chris! I drove through this city about 3-4 weeks after the devasting tornado went through, and I was SHOCKED on all of the damage that mother nature did to Mayfield. It was rather sad to see downtown Mayfield in ruins, especially with the beautiful courthouse.
I worked in and around Western Kentucky - including Mayfield for 4 years.. it has been devastating for the region, thank you for the update. I would never have recognized the place without knowing where you were from the beginning of the video. I will be sharing on social media and recommending others do the same.. May we never forget.
Grew up for 25 years in Paducah. I live in North Dakota now, but I got family in mayfield who tried to describe how bad it was. Hard to understand from a phone call. Seeing it now is wild. Used to spend it a lot of time here. Crazy that it’s all gone now.
Well done Chris! The video was concise and music choice was spot on. Hopefully with donations and perseverance the town of Mayfield can make a comeback.
Point of fact: The lowest rating on the EF scale is EF-0 not EF-1 as you stated. Great video. I remember watching this live on Ryan Hall Y"all's youtube channel.
Me too. We have to continue spreading the word about him! Ryan Hall had me in my neighbor's underground storm shelter during the other Kentucky tornado a few hours after Mayfield was pummeled. The EF-3 that hit Bowling Green and went up the center of the state, ending near Lexington. It jumped right over my house, before hitting Campbellsville. This tornado would've broke the record for longest track tornado in December history, but not quite as long as the Mayfield one. Mayfield, a.k.a. 'quad-state' tornado likely broke the 'longest-track' record for all of history, beating out the famous 'Tri-state' tornado of 1925. All in DECEMBER. Oh, I was also watching him when we had an EF-0 rip a roof off a barn about 4 miles from me just months ago. Where I recently moved from, tornados are rare. "Welcome to Kentucky", they howl!
we had a EF1 in our County it was scary during the Mayfield Tornadoes you honestly think about that scene in Black Hawk Down like Politics and that stuff goes out the window once you hear Bullets its really about Survival and I think like about that stuff like I shouldnt be here but im here ...
Been enjoying your videos for a few years. And the tornado that hit my city of Mayfield was devastating and very scary to experience. I look to the positive changes we can make. We as people must always strive to move forward and be better!
This video was made with a great deal of respect and tenderness for the people and their land who survived this gothic nightmare. Plain and simple. It is full of respect for shell shocked folks and their resilience. Thank you. I appreciate your research on tornados and this storm in particular.. Good journalism spreading safety awareness. They're collecting data and will continue to crunch it for awhile . There were chasers streaming "live" that night and 3-5 miles away seemed the minimum safe distance to get from this thing. Cars falling from the sky snatched up from miles away. Those chaser videos are horrifying. running 6-9 hours long . Unedited. All at night. 'You could visualize the tornados only during flashes of lightning.' It made its own "sound" They were following it right into Mayfield..... where they immediately stopped chasing /filming and went into search and rescue mode.. Some of those seasoned spotter guys are still affected..... My family drove on these pre interstate roads and stopped in towns like Mayfield all the way up to St. Louis from Birmingham. . We would sometimes stop in Mayfield. Mayfield meant that we were getting nearer to the rivers and the bridge heading into Cairo, IL.then Route 3 up to Jefferson Barracks. Chris, this is a well-honed production. I enjoy the ride.
Very well narrated, good selection of music softly in the background. One humble suggest Mr. Chris Harden, maybe a stop and film at some high point sites that require one to want to look at all angles and close ups. Thanks for the journey.
You should drive to more rural places that are part of tornado alley, and famously the eastern banks of North Carolina where hurricanes are super common
THE BARN ? I have eaten at the restaurant many times in my life.. I spent a lot of summers in Mayfield Ky .. My Uncle @ Aunt lived there.. My aunt taught school there for 50 years.. My Grand parents and my Uncle and Aunt are buried there. So thank you for posting this..
I grew up in Paducah and lived in Murray for several years while going to Murray State and I can tell you Paducah is about a 20 minute drive from Mayfield less if you live in Lone Oak which I did.
Awesome video! Ty. Very tragic circumstances. Am I correct in assuming that all of those vacant lots are where houses or buildings once stood? I’ve never had to live through a tornado and I feel for all of those people. Ty for sharing!

No it’s not. As of 2023, Mayfield still hasn’t recovered fully from the tornado. The downtown area still has empty plots of land; including the courthouse. It may have gotten the most coverage, and some donations here and there, but the town simply does not have the funds to fully rebuild and may not be able to for years to come.

To bad we don’t make rounded homes with underground levels the norm
Rounded homes are actually not better in tornadoes than normal cube homes
Do you have underground level money?
The federal government can give billions to other countries but what have they done to rebuild Mayfield?

Also the NWS wouldn’t rate it EF5 because of insurance reasons and people effected by this tornado would of received more if it was rated EF5
